007: First Light - Future James Bond games will come from Amazon Games, confirms boss UDPATE: New Update From SGF

Not quite the same since Obsidian held the IP rights, the issue here is that IO don’t hold the IP rights & that’s the issue with any licensed property

Sadly, no doubt Amazon will be looking to cash in since they hold the bond rights :(. Hopfully Aamzone will see sense & let IO make a sequel

They’ll be crazy not to bring them back for sequels.

I think the success is partially the problem. With sales like these who publishes the game really matters. What benefits IO the most and what benefits Amazon the most is going to be in conflict. They’ll have to compromise, so it’s really hard to say. There’s also a real possibility that Amazon falls into hubris and thinks they can replicate this success on their own to keep all the money.

To clarify the situation, IGN spoke with Gattis at Summer Game Fest about what the development and publishing of subsequent James Bond video games could look like.

“First of all, let me set the record straight for you,” said Gattis. “I did not confirm that Amazon Game Studios is publishing the next one. Did not say that. So unfortunately, it got picked up, and once it runs, it runs. No, IO’s been great. They’ve been great partners. In fact, I was over there visiting them in Copenhagen a couple of months ago. The game’s doing great. Let’s let the game breathe and have its day.”

Understandably, the uncertainty over IO’s ability to carry on making the new series it’s established caused a certain amount of worry with fans who would love nothing more than to see the Hitman studio continue its Bond origin story.

“Trust that we’re going to be smart about this,” Gattis reassured players. “I mean, it’s market appetite. As long as we feel there’s a desire for players to have the game, it’s safe to say it’s going to be made.”

To try and get as much confirmation as I was ever likely to in this interview, I once again asked if 007 First Light being on track to turn a healthy profit was as much of a green light as needed to get the next entry into production. Gattis’ answer: “Seems like a sequel should be made.”

It’s by no means a guarantee, but it’s promising news for those, like me, who thoroughly enjoyed IO’s single-player action adventure take on Britain’s most famous spy.

There’s a bit of damage control here, but I feel like it’s pretty strongly saying the conclusion we all came to that there is no conclusion really. Amazon and IO will just have to come to an agreement they both like or they won’t. There’d be a lot to discuss about who develops the game and who publishes the game. Had Amazon owned the rights before the deal was made they likely would’ve published the game themselves or maybe not even made the game at all. But that the game is already out and a success, they’ll probably play it more carefully.

I don’t think they are gamers, so they don’t know that we took these statements, especially after the release of a highly rated game like that, very seriously. But I think they understand that it will be difficult to make a game without IO Interactive.

In the article there’s another quote from a few days ago from IO:

Last week, IO CEO Hakan Abrak told IGN he was “very confident” 007 First Light will be profitable for the studio, despite it being the most expensive game it’s ever made. “There’s some royalty models and whatnot around this, but we are well above our forecasts at this point,” he added. And of course there’s plenty more to come with the game itself, as IO just outlined 007 First Light’s first year of content.

It would be very dumb to not let IO do a sequel. They have a sure hit in their hands. Let’s see what happen, but at least Amazon understood that they spoke too soon.

They always underestimate the vicarious volatility of the fierce legendary creatures known as

I do also think that part of it is that they definitely WISH they published this game. Amazon is a company that cares about money and control (all do). They aren’t making as much money as they could and they don’t have nearly as much control. But that the game is already at and has built a fanbase is going to be a defense for it.

Yeah, I’m sure they see the game doing well and think that it’s the James Bond franchise doing great again… But I hope they understand it’s not just 007, it’s IO Interactive, a highly regarded studio doing it right.
