343 rebranded to Halo Studios, switching to Unreal Engine 5 for future Halo games of which "multiple" are in development

343 could have saved “BILLIONS of dollars” by switching to UE?

What?!

I’ve worked with people like this and they’re super annoying. They also don’t take criticism well and think their opinions are the only “correct” ones.

I hope that dude has a better fitting job for him. You have to be really cautious with single sources – ive had people warn me to not work with certain managers and then theyve been amazing. People are very complicated.

But yeah, only time will tell.

Yeah that one was a head scratcher, even if you added up the budgets of their last 3 games it wouldn’t hit even 1 billion, so I’m not sure what he’s talking about here

I forgot about this but if I’m not mistaken UE5 is supposed to handle open world well, Witcher and now Halo are going to UE, that’s two major franchises, Witcher 4 will very likely be open world and Halo 7 I think will be very open.

Indeed UE5 seems more tailored for open world but has not been performant and has been wrought with issues that DF talk about in their video even going as far as saying what was shown would not be possible on the series S., I do wonder somehow if they could have used CryEngine.

I am sure they looked at the options available and decided UE5 was the best fit. You don’t make a change like this without evaluating the options. You can see from the disgruntled employees how much was behind this decision.

It’s likely a demo running on PC though.

That’s not going to help him with future job applications

Also, when I first heard about this, it was in regards to UE4, well before UE5 was even announced.

I can’t blame 343 for saying no to 4 and yes to 5, especially considering the development that has gone into the engine since then.

Depending on how far back it was, if the talks were after H4 and before H5 it may have even been before UE4 was even released.

Official release dates to keep things sorted:

  • UE3 released 2004-03
  • Halo 4 released 2012-11-06
  • UE4 released 2014-03
  • Halo 5 released 2015-10-27
  • Halo Infinite released 2021-12-08
  • UE5 released 2022-04-22

The exact time I heard about it was around the time it was being used for MCC, like just before it. Because when I heard about it I was like “no you’re mistaken it’s only for MCC” and they were like no, they’re thinking of making a whole game in it.

I wonder if the next Halo will match these visuals:

It looks lovely for a fan project.

I heard some of the devs in the Halo UE video talk about making Halo the most advanced looking game again, there was a time when Halo was a visual juggernaut back in Halo CE-Halo 2, don’t want to discourage Halo studios from trying but it shouldn’t be the biggest priority although a part of me would love to see Halo match some of the top PS exclusives in visuals, to be fair Playground and The Coalition do that already but don’t get as much recognition.

Yep I know I can be an arrogant twat, but at least I’m aware of it so take measures to try and mitigate it - such as listening to other’s ideas and running through them before dismissing, accepting or taking parts of them.

Most developers I know are arrogant to some degree, you often have to be to feel what you’re doing is good - so I do expect big personalities or arguments, or some people to just not fit.

But yeah he strikes me as one of the idealistic ones who always is daydreaming about some “new, better” way when the rest of you are working hard to deliver - and know his way isn’t achievable at the moment due to either cost, corporate culture or deadlines.

Many new developers or new starters to a firm will be idealistic like that but most realise things change slowly and you often have to prove your point to make a change - so either leave or fit in with the group.

His 14 years is a loooong time for an idealist to stay in a corporate culture - which makes me think they pamdered to his ego a bit sometimes and his narcissism made him think they couldn’t survive without him (not being mean, we all do that to some extent!).

I suspect they’re pretty glad he’s gone - I’ll always take a smaller team with the right mindset and an ability / willingness to learn and compromise regardless of experience level over an experienced big team where there’s too many loud voices and no consensus…

Maybe next gen certainly not this one unless it’s a small game like Hell Blade. I have yet to see a UE 5 game this gen that produces visuals similar to their demos.

And further, Gears of War 4 which was the first “big game” in UE4 didn’t release till October 2016. So, yeah, a lot of things can change in nearly 10 years lol.
