Being on multiple mature platforms helped here. If FF16 comes out underwhelming, I don’t think it will fare well at all.
I don’t think it helped THAT much, 80% of sales were on Playstation and it didn’t launch on PC till 2 years later. FF16 won’t have an easy time being a next gen only game but there’s a solid team behind it and it’s launching on what would most likely be it’s strongest platform still. I’m sure it’ll do fine.
Worst reviewed mainline ff game. 5 million at launch but heavily discounted after. Cancelled dlc.
Different franchises are held to different standard. If rockstar put out gta6 and it got 85 meta. Thats bad. For saints row. Its good.
It depends how good it is. If ff16 has around the same level meta and fan reception as 15. Its done. Needs to be at least 7 remake level.
Final Fantasy 16 is really departing from what fans of the series enjoy too. I’m getting ready for an utter disaster here.
“Those sales don’t count, the game was discounted by then” is nonsense, every game gets discounted if we factored that in we’d just have to discount every games sales numbers. It’s the third best selling game in the franchise and made back it’s budget day one by being the fastest selling final fantasy of all time at launch. Hell, it even outsold Final Fantasy VII Remake at launch. The DLC was only cancelled because the creator decided to leave to pursue other projects, they had infact increased the initial DLC plans by that point. And even if getting a low 80 metacritic score was bad, which it’s not, it’s still not even the worst reviewed in the mainline franchise.
I dunno about FF15, but Cybperpunk is an example of a game that got discounted extremely early. Pretty sure I got it for under $20 within 12 months of release. It’s not a totally bogus excuse, but I know Cyberpunk is a special situation.
It’s a pretty hard subject to make a definitive statement on with so much information missing, I don’t exactly remember it going on sale all that quick but perhaps it did - but since there’s reports to say the majority of the games sales were in it’s first week when it was still full price the point seems largely moot.
Ff15 was one of the first jrpgs to be on gamepass. It was 10 bucks on pc fast for a long gime
SE couldnt wait to give that game away
And yes it was a flop. Otherwise SE would have made a sequel
Also sales count for bragging after a while unless youre a nintendo game or blockbuster thats making money.
Yes ffxv sold decent in raw numbers. But that game SE couldnt wait to move on from.
“That game SE couldn’t wait to move on from” - again, the game made it’s budget back and more day one and they originally doubled their DLC plans for the game based on it’s success and spent 3 years putting out updates and free content for the title - amounting to hours of actual playable content being added even past the initial push to improve the stuff people didn’t like. There was multiple crossovers with other games including Assassin’s Creed, FFXIV and Terra Wars. The game outsold FFVII Remake at launch (even factoring in the loss of Xbox platform sales) and while it was on game pass it was there with pretty much every other Final Fantasy game released on the console. Fair enough if you want to debate the games quality but the idea that it was a “flop” is clearly false.
commercially yes you can’t outright call it a flop because it still sold a decent amount but that was on brand name alone. I still think SE wanted to sell more copies of that game, way more. It did not meet their expectations no matter how hard they tried…and then yes they gave up. Look at sales of BOTW, Elden Ring, Witcher 3, Skyrim…SE wanted FF15 to be at those level in terms of sales. Absolutely they did and the budget for the game is around the ballpark to all of those. Even Cuberpunk sold more despite being a horrendous launch. Critically it was absolutely a flop.
