Oh really ? Iâll check.
I saw reviews criticizing how itâs not the Black Flag they remember, scraping the modern part of the game and basically smoothing things out too much, like stealth mechanics, but I thought: thatâs exactly what people wanted!
It plays really well and it feels more connected to the new games in many ways. It feels great!
I disliked the combat in the original Black Flag. Happy to see it replaced with something more Origins-like instead.
The other things I didnât like about the original game was the way the open world was broken up into pieces, and all the tailing missions and enforced stealth. So the changes theyâve made for Resynced feel like theyâre specifically tailored to my preferences!
Aw man, I really donât need moar games atm but âŚpirates.
Looks awesome.
I was wondering why this game was getting review bombed at Steam.
Not bad Ubisoft, not bad.
Started Black Flag yesterday and played for a few hours mainly to test out the difficulty levels, controls and whatnot. Bought the $5 Map Pack DLC as it adds the icons for extra collectibles to the world map which is worth it for me as im not someone who wants to look for them all. I prefer them to be on the map and I just go to it after way pointing it.
Anyway, I started a new play-through today and played for about 10 hours. Game is excellent overall and should easily be my 2026 game of the year but I do have several negatives.
First and foremost, way-points donât go on the screen until you get closer to them which is very annoying. It basically forces you to keep the compass on or use the pathfinder option. Both of which I donât like at all. In fact, I eliminated the pathfinder, throwing coins and advancing time from the actual controller configuration as I will never use them. I have the compass turned off as well as the celebrations option due to the fact that it tells you where youâre at in the middle of the screen almost all the time and it was annoying the hell out of me. I have never liked the compass in general and turn it off in nearly every game. The lone exception is Arc Raiders. I miss the mini-map which I believe is far superior to that of a compass. Not only is it usually in the corner of the screen but it eliminates the issue of it obstructing the screen like the compass does. Like seriously, I fucking hate the compass in general in games.
Second, the controller configuration had the attack button set to RB/R1 which when it comes to melee combat games, the default should always be the X/Square button. I donât know why developers have an obsession with copying souls games in this regard. Itâs very annoying. With the change, I havenât had any issues.
I removed the quick use smoke grenade which was set to down on the directional pad. Since you can hold LT/L2 and still access the smoke grenades, I felt the need for it to be on the directional pad as useless. Main reason though was due to Eagle Vision which I switched from the RS/R3 button as you had to hold it down but it would at times lock on to a target since thatâs also the RS/R3 button. So I assigned that to the down directional button and made it a single press.
Iâm not a fan of Eagle Vision and never have been. I simply donât like it and simply see it as the most overused gimmick in games today. I wish that Ubisoft would have given you an Eagle like in Origins/Odyssey so you could scout from the sky and mark enemies that way.
I have noticed that they added âcolored dotsâ to the world which represents chests and whatnot but it reminds me of Valhalla which I didnât care for gameplay/combat wise. Being able to use the Eagle in Odyssey for example to mark every enemy, treasure chest, etc. was so much better in my opinion.
The parkour is good but again, I wish it was like the original game or Origins/Odyssey where you walk/sprint like normal using the LS button but hold down RT/R2 to parkour. With that said, itâs still clunky at times. Iâm NOT using the advanced parkour because the last thing I want to do is back eject or some weird shit that I donât want to do. I do have âfree jumpâ on though.
One nitpick is letters/notices in the game. I will never understand why games donât just âeliminateâ them once you pick them up. I have already had a few instances where im scouting and a white colored dot is on screen but when I go to it, itâs a letter that I already read. Itâs annoying.
HUD wise, I have the enemy attacks off (those effects or whatever theyâre called when you parry an enemy and whatnot) as well as the stealth outline, that white glow that goes around the edge of the screen to let you know an enemy is there, enemy detection meter, ranged detection, etc. I basically have it all off. I only keep the health bars on for the enemies/ships. One thing that may have been in the original but I donât remember is the silhouette that appears which is Edwardâs last known position. This is coded into the game and canât be turned off which again, is annoying.
Combat wise, im playing on hard across the board for all four segments (combat/naval/stealth/exploration) and itâs easy as fuck. I have died only once and only because I was fighting bandits in a camp and a stronger enemy had a fire cannon or something that took half my health and set me on fire killing me. Other than that, while I at times have had to use all my health remedies, unless im fighting more than 3 enemies at once, itâs not difficult at all. Itâs so easy that I stopped using the finisher off a perfect parry and only use it when the enemy is close to zero health. Killing enemies with a full health bar using the finisher after a perfect parry seems cheap to me.
Ship wise, my only issue is the camera is too fucking close. You canât see what youâre aiming at all the time. One thing that baffles me is why when you aim using an arc, the further the arc, the higher the camera goes which makes you look at the sky. It should be the opposite. The further the arc, the lower the camera should be so you can see what youâre aiming at. This is a general complaint of mine in pretty much every game.
Visuals/audio/story and characters is all excellent. Outside of Edward freezing when I was trying to kill a leopard and had to go to the main menu and continue from my previous save, I havenât had any technical issues.
Overall, an excellent game thus far and im obviously enjoying it a lot despite my issues/complaints but in fairness, im not really nostalgic but this game is definitely making me feel that way since the original was and as of now still is my best Assassinâs Creed game and the game that made me a fan of the series.
One other note, the Animus Keys that you acquire in the game can only be collected if youâre connected online. If youâre off-line, you canât collect them which is fucking stupid.
Anyway, I will get back to playing the game tomorrow and despite my issues, I will be very surprised if any other game this year beats out Black Flag for me as my 2026 game of the year.
I caved and bought it lol, Humble had a 20% discount for Choice members which was even cheaper than Loaded
Yarrrr mateys! Time to set sail and plunder!
Sorry, Microsoft and Xbox arenât doing studio acquisitions any more.
My god the parkour is so broken in places - thereâs been a few occasions where heâll just walk around stuck on a platform and wonât climb or descend regardless of turning on or off advanced parkour and free jump.
Most of the time I eventually manage to get him to fall so I regain normal control, but Iâve had to reload a save once.
If it happens again Iâm packing it in for a few months until they do a load of bug fixing, beginning to remember what I didnât like about AC prior to Syndicate lol
I feel like parkour has always been broken in AC games. Even Shadows isnât great either. Climbing trees and jumping between them as always been especially finicky. Control are loose and if you push the buttons too fast, you have a good chance of jumping away from the branch you were on and hurt yourself. I donât think they can improve that without changing the way itâs done.
Yep but in Shadows, Odyssey etc I never got completely stuck - there were annoyances for sure, as theyâd jump to their deaths rather than dive into the hay (something Iâve had happen from Unity to Shadows) but in Black Flag it seems broken far too often.
I normally traverse the cities by rooftop, so far to avoid bugs Iâm actually running everywhere lol
The parkour was the best in Origins/Odyssey for me especially when you go with the alternate control scheme. The free climbing was fucking great and Ubisoft going backwards with Shadows was very disappointing. Itâs like, great I have to look for ledges and other hand holds for me to climb when im playing a video game. Yay!! With Black Flag, it makes more sense because it was four years before Origins but at the same time, I wish they would have eliminated the eagle vision and instead, gave you an actual eagle so you could scout from about. Not a fan of the âobserveâ mechanic ether because highlighting all of these white and yellow dots isnât exactly exciting and reminds me of Shadows but even worse, Valhalla. Ugh.
How about you warmly hire those employees back. ![]()
