Games Analysis |OT| Time To Argue About Pixels And Frames!

Summary?

Ryzen 5600U is already out and combines 6 Zen 3 cores with 7 Vega GPU cores on 15 watt for use in low power notebooks. The combination of Zen2 + RDNA2 is certainly interesting and a bit surprising. I would have thought AMDs next APU plans only involve Zen 3 cores.

The handheld future will be interesting. With the coming APUs from Intel and AMD it will be possible for other manufacturers to produce Switch or Steamdeck like products with even better specs. Lets see if there is a market.

Lol, that wasn’t directed at you at all amigo; there’s a decent chunk of folks here and elsewhere that completely dismiss why having dedicated ML hardware (coupled with MS’ research with DirectML) is such a big deal. I never implied we’d end up seeing 30/60 splits or otherwise; it’s possible sure, but I’d wager those performance gains from ML will be attributed to higher quality assets, particle effects, lighting/shadow resolution, etc.

Sorry, I totally misinterpreted your post. As usual, I blame @TavishHill :stuck_out_tongue:

I did not watch the video, but here is the article: A Plague Tale: Innocence's 60fps upgrade tested - and there's a bonus for Xbox Series owners | Eurogamer.net

Nowhere did I assume that nor did anything I typed suggest anything about ‘every developer’. o.0

Wrt DLSS implementation, you are missing my point, which is that if devs are doing that already on he PC side, there is not any reason to expect them to not do it on the Xbox side of the GDK too. At that point they would have already done most of the difficult work, which is related to tweaking settings to work well with ML SR (like making sure particles have motion vectors and tweaking motion blur to help cover the temporal artifacts).

You appear to think I am talking about games getting a magical x2 multiplier if using ML as if that happens in a vacuum. CPU has nothing to do with what I am talking about at all. I’ve outlined the detailed scenario several times now.

I’ll try once more and try being as clear as I can be:

Imagine a game with a perf mode and a RT fidelity mode a priori on both platforms. On XSX, the devs can lower the perf mode internal res to 1080p, turn RT on, and then just use ML SR to get back to 4k output exactly as they would be doing on the PC version. They’d not even need a dedicated fidelity mode anymore on XSX.

The result is that you’d have an RT/4k/60fps mode on XSX compared to an RT/4k/30fps fidelity mode on PS5…OR…you’d have have RT/4k/60fps mode on XSX compared to non-RT/4k/60fps perf mode on PS5. Either scenario is an enormous delta.

CBR/et al aren’t going to erase that gap since they would already be leveraged in fidelity mode with RT running as is (since you aren’t likely to see PS5 do RT in a 4k native game).

Nice! Sounds good. I still need to start with this game. Bought it a while ago and just barely played it. Heard nothing but good things about it though and this update is awesome. Most of it sounds great.

The part about grass draw distance is odd though. DF speculates that it may be to make sure we get a smooth 60fps, but you’d think both consoles should easily be able to do that along with the grass of One X. But as they said, it could be an oversight too.

I am halfway through the game. As a narrative-driven game, I am enjoying it so far.

They also speculated that it might have been based on the base console versions wrt settings. Which would be real weird. Hope it is fixed.

To summarise it Xbox wins just from the advantage of supporting VRR.

In form factor… yes but definately not in thickness

It also won’t be plausible due to implications on battery life

well its the beauty of the van gogh apu being used plus the advancements in the mobile segment with lpddr5 ram. 1.6 tflops from 15W of power is just down to the 7nm chipset. When 5nm starts looming, you might be seeing some absolute sleek looking devices or they can just push the boundaries with the tflops. Its all about power draw and heat management

They can always do a 3nm SoC unified memory format like Apple’s M series which will be really battery efficient.

Apple is not 3nm for now… Nor is it powerful enough as this amd APU is

I thought the next exynos chip with rdna outperforms the M1 in gaming by a significant margin

Edit: looks like it wasnt a significant margin and i was actually talking about the a14 bionic. my bad

Yeah when is that coming out?

supposedly slated for reveal this month, but I dont see it happening. Looks like an August reveal with the new galaxy phone

Still the product is not in the market yet… That’s what I was trying to imply only. I thought you were talking about Macs already launched with M series.

Yeah the new iPad Pro also has M1 but is still severely under-utilised by jailOS.
