I don’t even believe the GDK issues are completely sorted out.
I think the raw spec advantage of the Series X has already drawn basically even with the PS5, despite the GDK not being where Microsoft would like it to be.
I have no doubt we are going to see some major games this coming year run better on Xbox. Unfortunately there is always the wild card of devs just not giving the Xbox version the same attention as they do the PS5 sku, as they know the Xbox version will have a smaller audience. This is a often unmentioned problem that is very common in multi platform development. Way too many games on PS4 Pro would run at 1440p, and devs just locked the XB1X version at the same resolution and called it a day. We will continue to see this regularly, but there will be some that push the Xbox further.
It will be a while until we see the developers taking full advantage of the GDK. Games releasing this year like Hitman III, Far Cry 6 and so on have been in development for at least three years – way before the GDK was first made available for developers.
Not to mention the last-gen ports like Control and Metro Exodus, which will use the Xbox One code as a base.
What we are seeing now regarding to the Series X advantages on games like Rocket League an Fallen Order is the console’s raw, brute power.
I agree that some devs would just reach some kind of parity and call a day due to xbox having smaller audience, although I would tend to believe, in a perfect world, that developers would always like to have their games running the best they can on the devices, but, yeah, there are lot of other variables to make it to this math. In this case, xbox moved from XDK to GDK bringing Xbox and PC close together and it should make thing more scalable from pc and mitigate at some extent this “dev trend”. We can only hope that things improve further, because this first batch of games was a blown to SX, imo. Xbox needs an absolute win to nail the SX power advantage. I’m not sure about this narrative of that these both systems are just to similat and differences shouldn’t be noticeable or very small. We are talking 2 TF more on SX, considering the PS5 is running 10 TF all the time (?), not just that, but also faster memory and even slightly faster CPU, not to talk on the so cheered full set of RDNA2. Of course the PS5 has its tricks as well, but we are talking about virtually the same AMD architecture here. I guess we need to wait to see how things will turn out later this year on this regards.
That would be fantastic, because I was expecting it to be much longer. But isn’t it a bit early to conclude this? I mean won’t it be until games that are fully built for GDK that we’ll find out? So far all these games are still multiplatform games too.
Almost all the launch games for Series X have been patched up to be greatly improved and or now run and look better than the PS5, that is what I’m referring to. New next gen patches also shows things doing better on the Series X.
Many were concerned that Series X issues would be a long term issue while it really was just for a hand full of launch games that have since been fixed.
Ah yes, that’s true. It’s definitely great news for sure. So once a actual next gen game comes out (not even sure which is the first one. Resi maybe?) we’ll likely to see good results too?
Medium is coming on 28. I am really curious to see the ray tracing performance compared to a 3070 PC.
Have they said or shown it off though? Since they still don’t have it in Observer, sadly.
I just hope Hitman III is great performance wise. I’m excited to pick it up on Wednesday.
The Rocket League next-gen SKU works better on Series X, too.
And I know the differences aren’t big, but I was even starting to read things like that PS5 is actually more powerful than the X and that is just factually incorrect.
What is clear until now is that the more time passes, the bigger the differences might potentially be, because the Series X is getting better and better with time.
Now give me a controller with haptic feedback, Microsoft.
I really like that Destin has taken an interest to these kinds of videos. I know first hand these types of videos can be time consuming but hopefully he spends a bit more time with the different versions in the future. The 30fps mode is not locked to a native 4K for example and mistakes like that bring down what is otherwise a very good video.
I’m hoping IGN can throw their weight around and maybe get more devs to open up on camera to their approaches to tech elements of their titles, kinda like how DF has done stuff like that lately. Waiting for GDC vault vids is kinda lame and those one on one interviews tend to be a lot more candid than presentations.
I have to run in a minute, so can’t watch now, but I wonder if this game makes full use of GDK now. Oh wait, it’s not DF just yet.
Watched this on the 4k TV and this might be the first game showing a substantial gap among them. Difference in resolution, is super noticeable right away even with YouTube compression.
Im super impressed with how this looks on previous gen.
I watched the part with the post it note where they zoom in. You can read it on XSX and not so much on PS5. The AA is better on XSX too. I also noticed the current gen versions looking washed out compared to old gen, but I assume that’s because they had the current gen in HDR while this video is not in HDR.
I do notice the XSX for some reason looking more washed out compared to PS5 in those nighttime parts, but I’m not worried. The previous two games look great on XSX and that’s with HDR too.
I only skipped through the video, but at some point they mentioned hdr was not kicking in for SX for some reason, while it was active on ps5. So it could be the tone mapping from hdr to sdr making other versions pop more.
Indeed. Great work all around
Ah I missed that part, skipped through the video too at parts. I am on the fence if I should get this game right now. I have all the maps of the first two waiting for me and the extra features of 3 will be great to have in those, but I don’t know.
As for differences, it seems XSX has a slight resolution advantage over PS5 judging by the post it note, haha. And it seems like the XSX and PS5 versions don’t have a quality mode, right? It’s 4K/60fps with I assume all the bells and whistles.
