Jim Ryan Retires, Connie Booth leaving after 34 years, Layoffs at Sony, Multiplayer games Cancelled

Spending over 3 billion on Bungie didn’t help them. “Funny” that they gave a huge bonus for retaining employees and then fired some of them. I heard that the employees who still worked at Bungie were angry. I would not be surprised if there are voluntary departures in the coming months. I hope these people find new jobs. Playstation makes shit and no one talks about it “coincidentally” lol

I’m on record for years, this talk started after the Bethesda acquisition, saying that Sony wouldn’t/couldn’t purchase a publisher at the same level (even more so the case now after ABK). Aside from the fact that Sony’s cash assets were fractional compared to Microsoft’s, I had supposedly-business-minded individuals who were lauded for their “knowledge” tell me that Sony could easily do so… despite ignoring the facts that Sony has gone nearly 20 years without taking on additional debt - they are a conservative company fiscally, especially after they lost 90% of their value during the 2005-2012 period. I especially wonder how willing Sony proper will continue to spend solely on Playstation when their growth projections show that this isn’t a repeat of the PS4 era.

Luckily, always had the actual-professional @profjjj backing me up

Absolutely, it’s a really sad situation but hopefully things do turn around at PlayStation.

Although the rumours around studios wanting to leave Sony were from very unreliable sources, it would be interesting if there was some truth to it. The two studios were allegedly Naughty Dog and Bungie.

It feels like Insomniac are the only studio holding PS together at the moment, which seems ironic considering they were one of Sony’s most recent (and cheapest) acquisitions.

If they lost Naughty Dog the damage would be irreparable.

Agreed :+1:t2: - on the back of that I found this recent chart quite interesting.

This and another chart that was floating around has suggested PlayStation’s profit margin has been dwindling, hence their switch to GAAS and now potentially back to SP again. I think they might be in for a rough few years until they find their feet again.

They lost 2 best directors they had at ND. The damage is already irreparable.

Not sure if I’m reading too much into this, but I raised my eyebrows at “I truly wish the best for my friends who are still there, and I have no doubt that they will be able to right the ship.”

…right the ship.

That suggests that there’s something amiss, aside from just the fact of the layoffs I mean.

Or maybe I’m overthinking his choice of words. :man_shrugging:

That stuck out to me too. This seems more then just financial. Something rotten in the state of denmark…

Maybe this is hyperbolic but I’m not sure how Bungie goes forward from this without gutting senior management

Why would anybody want to work there knowing that management is willing to throw you to the curb just to avoid you getting what you’re owed?

These aren’t just your usual layoffs where they are underperforming and are trying to cut costs, this is comically evil stuff that in a decent world, they’d be getting sued to shit for

It would happen at MS, all news outlets would cry loud.

NEW: Bungie laid off ~8% of staff Monday, or around 100 people, sources tell Bloomberg. Two weeks ago, staff were told they were projected to miss revenue targets by 45%. Employees were galvanized to get things on track… then came surprise layoffs
