JRPGs |OT| The Grind to Level 99 is Paved With Good Intentions

Falcom is highly known to not care at all about their Western audience. They work very closely with Clouded Leopard Entertainment to ensure their games are releasing with Korean and Chinese text day 1 with the JP release or at least within a month. It’s not really known why it’s taking them 3 whole years to do an English release, NISA is known to be really incompetent with localizing too. Personally I’d rather see Clouded Leopard take up releasing the games in English, because they do it with other dev’s games, but NISA probably won’t let go because Falcom IP is their best selling stuff.

Anyway, when Daybreak is coming out over here, Kuro 3 (or I guess it’s Daybreak 3 now) will probably be coming out in Japan/Asia.

Still it’s a phenomenal game (the sequel… eh, less so) so I’m very happy to see it finally being accessible in the West.

I really want to play their newest games, but I’m hoping that Nick’s rumours are true.

I think I’m waiting till next year and if Nihon games are still not on Xbox, I will play them on Switch or PC.

I would skip zesteria all together. Its an awful game. Beseria is great. Wish that came to xbox or even switch

I will play them switch if rheyre god ports or wait for xbox version. The trails series is fine but ys games are garbage on switch

Finished , ni no kuni 1 ( all achievements) really enjoyed the game plan to start 2 this week.

I just hope outside of persona we see some more jrpg series coming, starting to burn through them at a steady clip now :s

Star Ocean Divine Force has one of smallest fonts I’ve ever seen.

I can’t read shit and I hate playing on English dub. Waiting for a patch is useless because the game is out for around a year.

Putting it back into my backlog.

Wait they still didnt fix that shit? Yeah its small as fuck.

Finished Valkyria Chronicles 4, did not get the true ending still but i did all its dlc content. Great game overall, wished Xbox invest a bit on this franchise so we can see it raise once more.

Anyway, now am torn between Persona 4 Golden or try my hands on the likes Chained Echoes or World of Final Fantasy.

It you have Game Pass:

P4G joined in January and Chained Echoes in December.

If it doesn’t matter to you:

P4G > Chained Echoes > WoFF.

Played all of them and I think P4G is a must play game, Chained Echoes is fantastic and WoFF is a great fan service game.

You need a mini guide if you want to unlock the true ending in P4G, while the other games don’t have any missables.

Alright, i will try Persona 4 next. Hopefully i can finish before Persona 5 Tactica.

With ps5 not set to leave I doubt 4 will do I would say if worried about gamepass leaving chained echos.

My guess is just like yakuza Microsoft signed a very good deal to have the persona games up for a long time

That’s definitely possible, but it’s always good to mention when a game could leave especially long games like JRPGs.

True. You know, which Sega Jrpg series, outside Like A Dragon and Persona, to you think Xbox should try to bring in the Game Pass fray?

Cause after playing Valkyria Chronicles 4, i truly do think that they should try and port the rest of the series titles over to game pass cause they remind me a bit of both Shadowrun and Wasteland in terms of game play, which could draw in more audience for those that enjoy those types of games.

What do you all think?

Regular JRPGs are not that popular on Xbox and strategy JRPGs from a not so popular series would even attract less people.

If Microsoft is focusing on porting JRPGs on Xbox, excluding SE IPs, I think Trails, Ys and Tales are the best series. But after TGS I wonder if the focus is still on porting old games.

Oh 100% it is nice to know for jrpgs I was worried mid ni no kuni was gonna leave as most Bandai games are only 12 months

Another year, another Falcom LE unboxing. This time of course is Ys X Nordics! Came pretty fast via Amazon Japan shipping.

Probably one of the more unique LE “boxes” I’ve seen. A small carrying bag that houses all of the goodies. Here’s how it looks without the packaging

The bag doesn’t feel too cheap or anything either, it’s really cool.

Now let’s see what this bag is hiding…

Nothing in the front red zipper . It’s cool that it’s there though. I don’t know if I’ll actually use this bag for anything however lol.

The top zipper. Some stuffing, and… a hidden treasure?

Let’s see what we have here…

Original soundtrack mini. I’m not a fan of “mini” soundtrack CDs, but the box is very nice.

A small pin.

A set of 6 “visual cards”, as always with some very fun images to look at.

2 DLC costumes. One is the Pikkard outfit for preordering. The other is the Legendary Cleria armor, which is LE exclusive. The codes are already redeemed of course .

And now the main event:

Glad Falcom didn’t skimp out on the inside box art :ok_hand:.

The good part about Falcom being “old fashioned” is that their games still include instruction manuals :yum:. This one folds out to show all the characters and the world map.

Anyway, just like with Kuro no Kiseki 2 last year, expect me to be posting a lot about this game in here !

Finally finished with Sakura Wars 2, and what an awesome finale to an amazing game!

This game was an easy 9.5/10, only negative being that boss fights drag on with them being damage sponges that are otherwise very easy.

Besides that though, huge improvement over the first game, which was already great. This game has really high production values for a visual novel, with dozens upon dozens of animated CGs and anime cutscenes, and of course the SRPG battles, with their own set of awesome animated special attacks

The writing and characters are extremely solid. This game introduces two new members to the main party and they fit right in, as well as many great new side characters. The story is also very enjoyable. Cheesy, but that’s the appeal. The lead up to the climax is just stunningly good, especially with an amazing soundtrack to go with it.

Probably up there as one of my favorite Sega games ever. Easy to see why this game was one of the biggest success on the Saturn in Japan. It remains my dream that Sega does a remastered collection on all platforms, with the games now translated, though I doubt it’ll happen.

Now I’m gonna have to get a Dreamcast for Sakura Wars 3 and 4!

Ys X initial impressions:

I’ve reached chapter 4 out of 9, at about 15 hours played. So this isn’t gonna be a terribly long game. Figured I’d write a little bit about how I’m feeling about it so far.

The gameplay formula has finally been changed up from how it was in the past many Ys games. There are now only 2 playable characters, with a much bigger focus on how they play, rather than large character parties. You also get a “real” jump now, not that “jump dash” thing from the last games, which I think makes for more fun exploration. Other exploration tools such as a grappling hook and a hoverboard become available as you progress too.

The “pacing” of the combat is now quite a bit different. It’s a bit slower, heavier. Still has a fast pace, but you’ll notice a difference from Ys VIII or IX. The systems of getting invincibility for perfect guards and dodges are also gone. Now, enemies can have blue “speed” attacks, that you can evade by dashing and follow up with a counterstrike, or red “power” attacks, that can be perfectly guarded and followed up with either a cinematic attack or with a strike from your “revenge gauge”. A gauge that builds up a damage multiplier for your skills as you block attacks.

An early boss fight there, I was still getting used to how the game played. I’m playing on Nightmare from the get-go, it’s pretty difficult, but I’m managing!

Boss fights with this new system are awesome, maybe some of the best Ys boss fights ever. I’m hearing that they get really incredible in the later half of the game, so I’m looking forward to that.

As you may know, new to this game is ship sailing. The game has still not really let me use this too much though. The ship battling so far is kind of… eh… The only thing that does any real damage is the X button super attack. Just line up with the enemy ship and fire. The ship exploration has also been extremely railroaded so far. Ys has always been a very railroaded experience, but I’m a little surprised that the game hasn’t yet let me see if there’s at least any optional islands or something.

The story is enjoyable so far. I won’t go too into it, but some stuff goes down, Adol is now bound to a new heroine named Karja by a “Mana Cord”, there’s some villains called “Greagers” causing havoc, and all of your allies are scattered around the various islands, waiting for you to get out there and explore to save them. It’s pretty typical Ys, which I like. The “adventurous” feeling is very much there, which was lacking in Ys IX.

The game’s visuals, I’m mixed on. It looks “cheap” in some areas, and I mean cheap for Falcom, when you compare to how Kuro no Kiseki looked (which I’ve heavily praised it’s visuals in this thread before). I guess this was to get it to run as best it can on Switch, which I can say it -mostly- looks and runs very well! It’s mostly locked 30FPS (apparently so on PS4 as well, only PS5 runs it at 60), though the intro section and a small few sections dropped it pretty bad. The visuals -can- look good while exploring a town or in certain dungeons though. A complaint I’ve been seeing is that very much of the game is just grassy hills. That doesn’t bother me too much personally, it’s what comes to mind when I think “Ys adventure”, but I understand the complaint.

So far, the gameplay changes have been very positive. I really look forward to every boss fight. Still need to see the “ship gameplay” open up though. Visuals, I’m a little shaky on. The soundtrack hasn’t been anything that noteworthy so far unfortunately. The great gameplay is making up for other shortcomings however, I am enjoying the game a lot!

Continuing my Ys X playthrough. Falcom has become so good at animation… :face_holding_back_tears:

Anyway, the ship gameplay opened up. Unfortunately it’s not the most exciting thing. Much prefer ground gameplay. When you reach a new open water area, the map already highlights all points of interest, so in a way there isn’t much for exploration on the sea, but that’s fine to me because I wouldn’t want to aimlessly wander around looking for secrets.

There is a degree of nonlinearity with the exploration though, a bunch of smaller islands you can check out as you arrive to a new area before heading to the next main objective. There’s also outposts you can find and liberate which usually have new people in them to save to recruit to your ship and reveal more points of interest on the map.

The chapters are getting longer, but I am checking out all the NPC dialogue and doing all the side quests and stuff.

The graphics are starting to grow on me a little bit. It can look pretty good like in the clip above. It’s not stunning me like Kuro no Kiseki did though.

I’m really accustomed to the gameplay now and it’s definitely one of the best gameplay styles of Ys. More difficult than previous party Ys games and everything feels so satisfying.

Now, I’ll leave you with this animation masterpiece (this was prob on purpose )

Tales of Arise - Beyond the Dawn DLC will have 11 new achievements.

Still a surprise that 2 years after the release Namco release a story DLC. Maybe the DLC will be the bridge for a sequel.
