Good review Jon. While I rated the game higher for myself, I don’t disagree with the complaints regarding the gameplay and combat as I enjoyed the story and characters a lot more even though it’s predictable early on in the game.
If the games continue to be like this, or rehashes of older games (Yotei) then Sony’s decision to skip PC continues to not bother me.
I’ll buy the odd game of theirs if I think I’ll enjoy it and it’s on PC, but not wasting money on a PlayStation to play a few meh games (I can’t stand the misery porn ones, and I’ve found the later Spider-Man games to be less polished than the first one)
I was brought here by shame. ![]()
Edit: Great review. A dad game doesn’t sound like an insult, but something that just won’t pop off with most gamers at the full price like Sony relies on. I wouldn’t buy a console for it or buy it at full price on PC, but it’d be a no brainer on a good sale.
Kinda just sounds like Insomniac had a losing game choosing Wolverine. His gameplay just doesn’t have that much variety. Even just in words this sounds like a major step down from any of the three Spider-Man games in just what gameplay can offer. I’d say if they were going to go Wolverine then they should’ve gone more out there. The character has a vast comic history and the X-Men even more so. Wolverine has been retconned into the Howling Cameos (kinda, adaptions and other universes loved using him for the team though). He’s also definitely fought in several wars and has used guns. He’s also been a samurai in Japan and used a proper blade. The X-Men have ties to the supernatural and were frequently a space team (Charles literally has a space wife and space daughter). I’m saying they really could’ve shaken up the game a lot. The setting could be on an alien planet in Marvel or a supernatural place where Logan feels (and is) REALLY out place to force a more interesting contrast. Put the character and setting in conflict and make gameplay work around that. Or Logan could have any manner of “tools” to keep gameplay fresh from any corner of Marvel comics that do whatever the devs need them to do to keep the gameplay loop from getting boring. Or even on a base level Wolverine could have different forms to reflect his long history and different experiences. Something like "The Wolverine (normal claws), the Soldier (guns), and the Samurai (katanna). They could literally have done whatever. Comics book accuracy is bullshit. Marvel comics aren’t even accurate to themselves half the time. Pull whatever elements from across Marvel comics, shows, movies, and even make some new ones up.
Yeah, in my view (and I’m sure many would disagree) Wolverine as a character is kind of plain on his own and you need to give the story some kind of unexpected twist to let him shine. Like placing him into the Japan setting in “The Wolverine” or the dystopian future element in “Logan.”
The story was never going to be the thing to carry this game if they decided to just do kind of the typical Wolverine story with all the elements you expect to see.
I’d say more like Wolverine is GREAT for a comic book or a visual adaption… and less great for a flashy action video game in 2026.
I listened to some video game podcast where two guys who played the game were very much not liking it at all, although they were liking Insominiac games. One stopped playing at 2/3 of the game, the other who had to go through it for the review didn’t like the combat, saying it was obvious they didn’t have a lot of ideas for unlocks, so they took out basic abilities so you have more to unlock down the line, but it makes half of the game a chore with only one combo “Square, Square, Triangle”, which makes it tiring really fast. You can’t even jump in combat at the start of the game, you have to unlock it.
They showed the Japan level with the two streets and the pseudo tailing section of ninjas walking in the open it seemed. It feels like they were stretching some sections just to make the game longer.
They also said something interesting is that it’s an accumulation of problems, more than one in particular. Every game uses element of gameplay that can be annoying and overused, but here it’s all of the game has to offer and it doesn’t really evolved much all throughout.
They only found the story and the relation between Wolverine and Jean Grey interesting and well written which says a lot. The guy who finished it said the story gets wild though.
