Sugar, with Colin Farrell is brilliant, must watch, give it a crack.
Is that a movie? And I am guessing comedy’ish? ![]()
It’s a Neo Noir Detective series on AppleTV service.

Yeh soz i was extremely vague
But as above, neo noire, intertwining a very clever sparodic use of old movie feel vibes that is so so cool and fresh. Colins gr8, looks like he doesnt age too ! Has a huge twist that could never be guessed and adds to the story immensely.
Yeah last weekend I grabbed a free trial for a week of AppleTV and watched the first two episodes, very, very cool indeed!
Also almost done with Invasion season 1, not sure what to think of it, some real stupid shit going on especially by annoying people but the concept is interesting to me. Dark Matter two eps in, interesting! Also gave the first episode of Brothers a shot, eh. And started with See, definitely interesting. I’m making the most of that 7 day trial. ![]()
Apple TV show I recommend more than any other…Shrinking
Added to list! I took one month AppleTV for €10 after my 7 day trial ended.
Just finished episode 2 of See and…
There’s two children growing up to be ten or twelve, this all happens in just one episode. However none of the big group of adults have aged like at all.

Just watched the first episode.
I never thought much of Jason Segal as actor, but he’s great in this. He’s entertaining for sure and funny and I don’t easily laugh about stuff in comedy shows or movies. It has heart too, I can always appreciate that. I assumed this was a brand new show with just one season but then I checked and it’s three seasons! Nice! Thanks for the recommendation! ![]()
I’ve watched the first 3 episodes of Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay and I am LOVING it. I swear it’s not because it’s October and I’m looking for horror themed stuff…hell, I had no idea that was even part of it, I just knew it was supposed to be funny, which it totally is, but the scary parts are LEGIT
So well written too
AppleTV has lots of good shows , my plan was to just have it for one month but the amount of stuff I’m seeing…it seems I will extend it to at least one more month.
I just wish Apple wasn’t so weird with some of their stuff. I would love to share my AppleTV with two friends so they can watch too but I don’t have a modern enough Apple device and i can’t set up Family Sharing on a Android device. It’s just a thing I need to do in the account settings but I need a Apple device, sigh.
Sadly my first generation iPod isn’t gonna do it.
Seconded. It really surprised me for just how much I loved it.
They aren’t weird. Lol. That’s by design. Apple is VERY good about doing everything in their power to “punish you” for not having everything Apple and all your friends not having everything Apple without actually “punishing you” for it. They just make it really inconvenient. Like these days they don’t employ as many exclusive tactics as they used to, but they make it so seamless to have your whole life wrapped up in Apple and for those to be actually good benefits that you don’t mind. Like use your apple card to make the most of apple pay tied to your apple wallet on your apple iPhone where you get bonuses when you sign up for apple TV using your apple card and it seamlessly works across your apple account on all your apple devices and sharing it means sharing your whole apple account or setting up family sharing with other apple accounts.
It’s rather interesting really. Especially when you compare them to a company like Microsoft that neglects their own ecosystem in a lot of ways and many times you have third party solutions that work better than the ones in their ecosystem.
I finished Lanterns. I thought the ending was good. But lmao it is 100% one of those adaptions you need to separate from the source material because it is so difficult to get through when I’m thinking how fundamentallu different this is from Green Lantern comics and animated media I grew up with. The John Stewart on screen is just a whole new character personality wise as is his relationships with Guy and Hal. A lot of the setting is and how they chose to adapt the manhunters and aspects of GL. It’s all there, but it’s wrapped and packaged completely differently. It felt more like a Gunn show than a Green Lantern one and from talking with another friend that reads comics one I think you’d enjoy a lot more if you have no or limited knowledge of the source material.
I’m honestly surprised they went this direction with a Lanterns show at all. For the wider “Gunnverse” it seemed mainly to serve for that ending to set up for future movies, but I would’ve expected them to use the show to spend more time in space and establishing the wider cosmos in Gunn’s universe. Concepts like the Thanagarians, Reach, Rann, new genesis/apokolips. Or man, I would’ve just loved a Far Sector adaption. Oh well another reason to just read the omnibus.
I am most salty that John Stewart is the main character here. DC has a habit on falling on the “one guy” they’ll represent a mantle, status, hero, or whatever that is way more than just one character. It’s pretty much only either Hal or John for GL stuff. Sometimes they remember Guy exists and make him a side character we can get annoyed by. Kyle got like one cameo in a DCAU episode
. They’ve started using Jessica Cruz more as the first female Earth lantern, but it’s still just frustrating how few characters get adapted. Not counting Alan Scott (the original GL) there’s at least seven (7) full fledged Green Lantern corps members from Earth and aside from Kyle none of them are White, two are women, and one is gay so it’s not even a diversity thing. It’s just DC defaulting to the same character for everything and it’s like, guys, come on. Simon Baz would’ve been PERFECT for this show. His personality and history is more like what they cooked up for John here and he’s actually a newer generation of Lantern (Hal, Guy, and John weren’t all made Lanterns at the same time but at this point in continuinity they pretty much were and they’re all equals that respect each other and there’s no mentor/mentee thing going on) from this century that has in the past decade had to do the whole “training under former green Lanterns” thing.
All that said an adaption is an adaption. I think it should stay on its own. My frustrations and whether it is something I personally can enjoy aside. I think Gunn’s DC universe will be something that has to stand on its own and get people interested by its own merit which it seems to be doing. Hopefully like the MCU it can make the names more popular. Unfortunately like the MCU I just also don’t think it’ll lead much to actual interest in the source material or actual characters, history, medium, and other adaptions. Just me trying to keep from tweaking out over popular opinion for it all being based on live action adaptions different from the source material (sometimes for the better or worse) and equally cringing at comic fans going “umm actually” and trying to gatekeep. It’s something I do wish western media would pick up from eastern: adaptions that better connect to and serve the source material. I think the 1:1 adaption is equally problematic and even more difficult to pull off when changing mediums, but I also wish these projects actually elevated, celebrated, and supported the medium they come from more. Even as the MCU becomes more obnoxiously comic book, it’s just so not easy to jump from one medium to the other and a lot of that is just on Marvel and how they treat both businesses. But a lot is also on how different the adaptions become from the source material. Rick Jones not being in the MCU is a sin. That man started the Avengers
.
It is different especially when building a cinematic universe. You have to make sure things serve your universe and your stories primarily. And that’s not going to be what’s happening in the source material. I’m just saying a little more effort to branch out and connect the two would be nice. Use more characters (replace John with Simon) and make it less of a whiplash. Get more creative with how you choose to adapt it and what you pull from in a way that captures the core. WHY THE HELL WASN’T THIS A JONAH HEX ADAPTION?? The vibe is there. Would’ve been great.
Finally watched Sinners. It’s now on my podium next to Everything Everywhere all at once, Puss in Boots Last Wish, and Across the Spider-Verse as a my favorite modern movies. I’m not a huge horror fan, but it quickly became clear it wasn’t really a horror movie. The supernatural was present but it served the plot not the other way around. The movie doesn’t even spend that much time on it in the grand scheme of things. I thought it kinda rushed it a bit with the climax, but the ending really tied it all together. It really was just a movie about Black people (minorities in general) in the 1930s trying to have a single night of freedom all to themselves only for them to be catastrophically punished for it not just by the supernatural but southern culture itself. It’s really not a time I like to think about and put myself in as a Black man today, but the movie also largely showed it from the perspective of the cast themselves. Despite the events themselves, it didn’t feel like I was in elementary school watching a historical fiction movie about how awful Black people were treated for the by far majority of America’s history. I didn’t spend most of the movie painfully watching Black people get whipped in the streets. I heard characters talk about how their friends were lynched and the sacrifices to their own happiness they had to make, but in this case tell don’t show kinda really worked because what did show was how it impacted the people themselves and how they still had to keep on living and enjoying life and trying to make the most of it to build something if there own. It felt much more like a celebration than I’m used to with Black focused movies that deal with oppression (or themes & undertones of it) to critical acclaim and hit wide popularity. I was terrified of how bad this movie would make me feel (scared or sad or disappointed in America and people), but it was kinda feel good. Like not unserious, but I laughed more than I expected and by the end of it I felt happier than I expected.
The soundtrack is also just amazing. All the songs. Before watching the movie I was stuck on “In Moonlight” from Jerry Cantrell, but now it’s Jayme Lawson’s “Pale Pale Moon”
You can tell I just got HBO Max. Stuart Fails to Save the Universe really surprised me. I never liked the Big Bang Theory, and the concept sounded so ridiculous when I first saw trailers for it (and it is even more ridiculous in action), but the show became well grounded in its main cast for me that the universe hopping was actually fun set dressing. There’s an episode where they go into a DC comic (should’ve done a Superboy Prime cameo you cowards at WB) and it’s just really fun. I actually think they did the Flash multiverse plot better than the Flash movie. I also really appreciated the simple things like Stuart having actual recent comics in their comic book store.
The show itself and it’s plot are both pretty simple. Until season 2 it’s kinda hung out to dry. The opening credits were meta in a fun way, but dear God were the episodes short as hell. I kinda liked it because I don’t think there was enough story yo drag episodes out and it wouldn’t serve anything much if they did, but also they spent multiple minutes on episode recaps and the actual runtime you were left with after that was really short.
Coming from the perspective of someone who didn’t like the Big Bang Theory and doesn’t even know who these side characters are though. I was really surprised. Also similar Shoutout to President Curtis. Haven’t finished it, but I’m also really surprised because I didn’t like Rick and Morty much. Next on the list for me (while I have HBO Max) is that, My Adventures with Superman Season 3, and Fiona and Cake!
If you are really in their ecosystem and happy with it I can see it being a really good thing. But I just find it rather ridiculous that I CAN install and use their streaming service, I can go into my Apple account and change stuff but once I simply want to send invites for family sharing…Apple device needed.
They can fuck off with that nonsense.![]()
