And how difference in opinion justifies tagging my comment as ‘trolling’?
I think the issue is they think with the old line of thinking of console sales = success. However, if you look at revenue, then you’ll see despite selling much fewer units that Microsoft tops Nintendo in revenue. I have no clue why a person such as Shinobi even entertains the idea that Microsoft should go third party and see similar success. Why would Microsoft surrender being 2nd in revenue compared to other console manufacturers?
Phil made himself a bit vulnerable and was transparent about the situation. However, it became open season to misquote the interview to create narratives.
My friend there’s differences in opinion and then there’s straight up misinformation. This has been discussed for days and there’s hundreds of posts in this thread that prove your point wrong. At this point posting that Phil is going retire or be fired is just spreading the same false information that’s been debunked days ago.
I’ll clarify. Your post literally says he sounds like he is ready to be sacked. That brings nothing to a 200+ thread. Also, it isn’t demonstrably true.
In addition, an opinion based on mistruths is not a valid opinion. The idea that all opinions are equal is false and not a defence against popping into a thread and throwing off random stuff and then standing back and being “what, what’s the problem, it is just my opinion, man” unless it is your first day on the Internet.
You know why. It’s because then Xbox is dead and all their games can go on the Playstation. His bias so blatant. Just ignore.
That got my eyes rolling.
And that’s not what I would call an opinion.
Phil’s management by being hands off ? I mean that’s the strategy of Microsoft, not just Xbox.
We can all criticize Xbox for being way too “hands-off” and that’s fair.
But saying he will lose his job because of the recent events is actually a reach.
And who are those journalists? For Microsoft I would trust WindowsCentral and Thurrott. Gaming media would love if Phil Spencer leaves because it’s another reason to criticize Xbox.
For sure, I just wish people like him don’t try to pretend they’re unbiased when they’re doing takes like that.
The idea doesn’t even make sense when Microsoft would lose a ton of money doing that since they don’t have a live service cash cow like COD, Apex, Fortnite, etc. I like Microsoft games, but I don’t think releasing on Playstation would give them a significant jump in revenue.
MS bout to fire Phil but then looked at the revenue and said nevermind
As for the third party talk, I’m not sure how it would even make sense considering GP is their main play going forward and Sony are never going to allow it on their console
You’d make more from sales but if GP is the play then what you make in sales you’d lose in potential GP subs
So, they want Xbox to turn into a thing they constantly berate them for? A publisher? All they go on about Xbox is they can’t make great games, management issue etc.
But going third party will solve those things, these people should openly say they don’t want competition and just want games only on Playstation. Tired of these non-sensical takes.
I’ve never understood the whole going third party. There so many flaws in the logic behind it. It would kill revenue, it would really hurt gamepass growth and the one thing where xbox hasn’t caught up yet is game output which is the core of being a third party
Phil Spencer isn’t going anywhere until he officially retires.
Is he perfect? Of course not but no one is but he’s done a great job across the board for Microsoft and the Xbox brand. Does he need to be a little more aggressive and more asshole like business wise at times? Absolutely.
What Phil really needs to do is first and foremost, get Bethesda integrated into Microsoft by next year and end their publishing arm. Roll them into Microsoft’s publishing arm. This way, it’s all under Microsoft (which is what I consider Bethesda to be anyway because Microsoft owns them and ownership at the end of the day trumps everything else) and they can get things more organized and structured.
I do believe that he does need at least two other quality experienced people to oversee studios. Matt Booty is there but I believe they need two more so they can split the studios evenly to like 8 each or something like that so it can decrease the workload for each individual and makes things easier so no studio gets overlooked or ignored.
After that, I do believe that these “leaders” need to be more hands on in regards to once a game gets green lit, get progress/status reports/updates every three months and see how the projects are progressing and if the studio needs anything like more money, resources, tech, personnel, etc.
Besides that, stop putting release years or dates on any game until you know you’re six months or so out and can 100% hit that date because every game that gets a release date and this applies to every publisher, im always expecting at the very least, one delay.
Right now, Microsoft and Phil just needs to take the hit from all the negative shit right now and just let it go. Get to the showcase and obviously they know if it’s going to be great or not and if it is, then majority won’t give a shit about the negativity going around the last few weeks anymore.
Other than that, Microsoft and Xbox will be just fine.
You don’t give $80B to someone to invest in toys and then fire them for one low rated game…that has performed well commercially.
They’d promote him, but then he’d be running Microsoft.
Not to mention the ‘go third party’ crowd are often the same people who are saying Xbox can’t make great games. So let me get this straight. These people believe that Xbox can’t make great games, so their solution to this issue is to go third party? It just doesn’t make any sense.
On top of that, from a business perspective going third party is essentially Microsoft putting the faith of Game Pass into the hands of Sony and Nintendo by giving them the ability to charge Microsoft whatever they want to allow Game Pass on their consoles.
There is a reason why Amazon continues to release devices like the Fire Stick and Fire Tablet. It’s not because their devices are desperately needed in the market. It’s added insurance in the event that Roku, Google, Apple, etc. try to strong arm Amazon when it comes to Prime Video, Amazon Music, Kindle e-books, etc.
There is no logic, it’s only wish fulfillment by fanboys.
“There are ‘sources’, I swear” ![]()
Also, without a source I’m disregarding entirely but even still I wish that people would understand that pundits can say anything - there’s no baseline for “truth” before someone can say “x should be sold because I said so” and I could list dozens of examples where pundits say a company should do X, only for them to do Y. In other words, pundits’ words rarely matter and rarely require evidence to make a claim.
Edit: Additionally, if the claims that “Microsoft isn’t happy with Xbox” is coming from the same source that claimed MS wasn’t happy with Tango either and that HiFi Rush tanked- the same day that it was announced HiFi Rush had 2 million players thus far and that Tango was getting a nearly 100% staff increase - I think we can throw that claim in the bin with the rest of it.
I was thinking about the interview quite a bit these past few days, listening to Nick and John and others and my thoughts are :
- Parris comments were disappointing, dumping on Phil like that, like he was counting points. I don’t know if it was supposed to be overdramatic, but it felt disrespectul. But maybe something was lost in translation.
- Whitta felt like he was just stopping by, talking to himself, but I don’t really know him so I don’t know if that’s his thing. But again, it felt disrespectful.
What’s pretty clear :
- Phil shouldn’t go to these podcasts anymore. These guys don’t want Xbox to have any win. They are here for entertainment, not to inform consumers.
- I know Phil like to go out there and try to fix stuff and say “he’s sorry for the teams”, but it’s not working anymore and it starts to become detrimental to Xbox brand even.
- He should have went to an Xbox only podcast like the Xbox Era podcast this week, talk to Nick and John who actually know their stuff, are kind and respectful, are not doing it for clicks, but also know what questions to ask and what topics to discuss !
- It would probably have prevented the infamous quotes.
The piling on in the media and on social media has to stop at some point.
I think the tricky part is timing of this was awful, and Phil must’ve okayed those questions being asked. Before any appearance you vet the journalist and let them know what’s off limits, so he most likely okayed everything. I think it was just unforutnate this happened with the CMA drama and Redfall release, and Phil could’ve easily postponed it. However, it seems he wanted to speak to let Xbox gamers know he hears them and they’re looking to improve.
Also, I don’t mind Parris asking hard hitting questions because many are curious about the stuff he asked Phil. I think the bigger issue is Phil might’ve been too transparent, which has lead to people misquoting the interview to get their own narratives going
Okay, yeah, it makes sense.
It was just hard to watch Phil just being sorry again. He’s too transparent but also not reassuring anymore. It was kind of painful to listen to his long sighs to be honest.
My biggest problem with all of this is the absolutely hyperbolic/extremist response: Xbox has been on a steady positive climb since the new year and one disappointing launch supposedly destroys all the progress and good-will? I’ve not seen such a manufactured “disaster” in years, and seeing as another studio was closed by another publisher (you know, something that actually matters due to employment loss, etc.) without nary a sign of doom and gloom… it’s all a bit tiresome, predictable, and absolutely over-exaggerated-doom.
