PlayStation 5 |OT| This SSD has no limits

He should not talk too fast like that. Lol. The backfiring will be brutal. :slightly_smiling_face:

Look, I get it. And I don’t deny a lot of this stuff is impressive, but there isn’t much wrong with sticking with what works either.

PS5 has advanced haptics, a new UI, a new controller, a crazy form factor designed to be “new”, etc. and tons of features misconstrued as New (3D audio has been done by MS for eons. So is tracking time in games by Nintendo and MS. These aren’t revolutions, they’re borderline expected features).

However, that comes at a cost. Sony has more impressive games out of the gate, but many are crossgen. Sony got dev kits out early, but lost full RDNA 2. Sony’s SSD is faster and more efficient, but MS put in the time to make theirs better than the on-paper specs.

And the biggest cost goes to the consumer. The new controller is easily 100+ million that can go to a game. The new UI, probably 30 million in R&D and there are things to fix. Etc., etc.

I am fine with MS cutting costs on the controller, UI and “newness” because they work and it saves money. That $100+ million saved on the controller redesign probably bought the EA Play partnership. The minimalist form factor probably allowed them to stuff more and better tech. Yes, it’s another waiting game from MS, but in the grand scheme of things, I’d rather have better tech over “newer feeling” tech, especially when the old stuff works just fine.

Halo being delayed really hurt them in the end, but by late 2022, when we’re kicking back with Avowed, Starfield, Hellblade, Wolfenstein and Everwild in our quick resume queues and like 300 other Game Pass games, who cares?

I don’t. Similarly anemic launch line up, tweaks to existing tech (all the controller stuff), inferior specs at the same price, and all the “better than paper specs” fluff is just that. Marketing fluff building on nostalgia and “look! A shiny!”

Objectively the Platstation hardware is an inferior product subjectively held in higher regard that it currently deserves.

Only next gen because of a controller with some special features that will eat away the battery life? And I am guessing because they have Spidey MM and Demon’s Souls. What I saw from DF and some other YouTube channels is “now this is next gen”.

That’s the two reasons critics find it more next gen, because Xbox doesn’t have a game of their own showcasing the power. They aren’t wrong, but I do find it a exeggeration.

We only need to look back in history to show how little regard we should give Sony PR statements.

This is what was said for the six axis controller when it was released with no rumble

“The vibration function is the game sending a single channel of feedback to the player - six axis of input puts the player in control in a much richer, deeper way. So, game design can go in much more interesting directions as a result of that than from receiving a single input from the game itself.”

The initial PR justification neatly bookended with the truth of the matter, it’s all about costs, profit and loss.

“I think the caveat to that statement always has to be based on the fact that when we make a pad, we’re making maybe 150, 200 million of them. So it has to be done at a price, and it has to be done at a volume that fits our production requirements. I think the decision that we’ve made to build in the SIXAXIS functionality, and Bluetooth wireless, and great battery life, and all the other functionality that comes with it, far outweighs the chatter that we’re getting on vibration. And, it’s incredibly light! Just pick it up!”

As much as I laud the efforts made to evolve controller haptics the reality is that there was a direct effect on the R&D resource available to focus on the consoles design and also build cost (each console has a duel sense packed in and they won’t be as cheap to produce as a standard controller). I think MS took the smart path here by focusing all of their budget on the box itself (no doubt due to the lessons learned from kinekt 2.0). Easy for them to retrospectively build a functionally identical controller and add dev kit support for it not so easy for Sony to engineer a PS5 pro.

Damn Sony first year is looking great if all games it https://twitter.com/Nibellion/status/1325770805859528704

Eh, I don’t wanna judge the Dualsense without having tried it since so much noise is being made about it. I would feel a lot better about the battery life if you could swap it out though! I do agree with your other point, about it being a shame that there’s no flagship game to show off the Xbox. It’s been a weird year all around, so I’m just glad I’m getting some new fancy hardware really. I’m not interested in any kind of list wars, I’m totally fine with games coming out when they’re ready and devs not being rushed (not implying anything about the PS5 launch titles).

In the end, I don’t think it’s a bad thing that MS and Sony are doing different things. I like different experiences being what makes platforms interesting and I like that much more than exclusives and dumb shit like “you get extra XP if you play on PlayStation”. It is a bit annoying that Sony can apparently do no wrong in the eyes of the games media, but who cares really? Doesn’t affect my purchasing habits or anything :man_shrugging:

Lol wut

I’m guessing the Digital version is patched and locked at 30FPS so you would need the disc and not install the update which would make the frame rate unlocked. Like AC Unity.

That would be one hell of a 2021 lineup for PlayStation 5 but im going to stay with Ratchet as Spring 2021, Returnal in the summer and Gran Turismo 7 in the Fall. I truly don’t see Horizon 2 or GOWR releasing until 2022.

Sony’s first year is straight fire - that is undeniable. Horizon 2 is definitely going to make it, and supposedly GoW will as well. Uncertain about that one. And unfortunately I will definitely have to play on my son’s PS5. My nephew hit me up when he heard I had a preorder, and I’m too nice a guy to not sell it to him. So, definitely only going to have the Series X now. I kept going back and forth on the PS5 anyway

That’s not a big deal as you will easily get a PS5 in the Spring around when Ratchet is expected to release. For me, I only have Miles and Ratchet until 2022 unless Horizon 2/GOWR release in 2021 which I just don’t see happening. Overall though, potentially a great to excellent launch and launch year depending on which games actually release and which don’t.

Looking at the reactions to this, I feel like a crazy person for finding this game to be very meh.

Yup! Same thing with AC:Unity.

Played this at my brother’s house and we had fun, but man…the beast wouldn’t listen at all way too often, lol.

That’s exactly the issue that I had! It was difficult getting attached because it never listened to me lol. Ah well, 60fps is good news for the people who loved it and want to revisit it and for those who haven’t played it yet and would enjoy it.

I picked up the 3D Pulse today. Damn good pair of cans.

PS5 launch trailer says R&C, GT7, and Returnal 1/st half of 2021, and Horizon 2 second half as well

That’s an insane first year

They are following the pattern of other teams Sony ended up buying (do several projects, gradually more ambitious than one before, if all go great buy em). I’m not that impressed with DS visually, but they would be a good team to get for sure! Have they ever made their own new title? Or just remakes?
