Resetting XBOX - XBOX Wire

Exclusive push got me back on board but every thing they’ve done post-showcase has just pushed me right back out the door. If they’re so uneducated on how game development works that they think gutting id makes any sense then I have zero faith that they won’t further erode the brand.

Dumping id into the shadow realm aint clearing up those 14 layers of management bubba. It seems more like that was a union busting move if I’m being honest.

This is tough but it was needed in my opinion since very long time. Im not happy seeing people losing thier jobs

This is what happens when you bring in another Nadella like. These guys are like machines with no shred of humanity. Next will be hearing they’re rehiring their fired staff once they find out they just F**ked up.

One of the reasons Xbox went buying studios was outsourcing or contracting didn’t work well for them last gen. Scalebound and Phantom Dust remake were cancelled. Heck almost all their 2nd party games this gen has now been canceled, or their involvement has been suspended from Project Fantasy to Contraband and others.

When Google saw they couldn’t develop games within a year they backtracked and Asha’s thinking seems to be going along the same mindset.

Lets be honest here for a second. When they were making doom dark ages did they ever stop and wonder if the direction they were taking doom was good one? Did we really need all the parry mechanics, cooldown powerups, weapons that work well against certain enemies or did people want just more of doom 2016? Changing his name from doom guy to doomslayer was also dumb and all the lore they added  i dropped doom tda mid game.

Weird. Could’ve sworn I’ve seen similar headlines just with “Halo Infinite” instead of “Elder Scrolls 6”. Almost like Xbox has learned nothing .

The lore additions you’re complaining about were from the Doom 2016 reboot you say people wanted more of… it was really added to with the even more popular Doom Eternal. Heck, Dark Ages is literally just those “In the first age, in the first battle…” stories brought to life…

I mean that can’t be true is it? id is a legendary team and Microsoft just threw away all that talent? Fundamentally how could they be that stupid? Gutting a studio with that much talent to this extent is going to be really difficult to recover from. They can’t just use contractors or rehire when the tech is this specialized. Oh man, we still have quake con. Will we even have Quakecon this year?

At this point I don’t expect anything from id in at least a decade, since the id team in Germany is like 30 people that only do work on the engine.

Hasn’t been a year and the dooming and the apocaplyse is happening because of one studios, that is a good one, is getting shafted hard.Okay, I see that it’s a big blunder, but at the same time, I’m curious about one thing: how layoffs work in corporations? To they fire anyone they see to keep margins up, or is there something we just don’t know?

Maybe, they are firing folks in EUA because of the economy there not being all that great and they think hiring folks on germany instead might be a good idea,i dunno. The economy climate is uncertain to me as a whole.

I mean it fucking sucks wieners, but assusimng shit because of this blunder is kinda harsh. I mean look at the player voice stuff happening, i am pretty certain they are going to get rehired this year or beginning of the next if the comments are anything that helps the bussiness.

So let’s stop with this and see if something changes, cause i have an inkling we might get something.

It appears often the layoff decisions are made based on currently who’s between games so can be let go without cancelling a game that’s coming soon.

That hasn’t fully been the case this time, but too often it is - meaning that you can be skilled developers releasing great games but if you release something just before a big layoff season hits you can be a target as you’re easy pickings.

Annual layoffs are no way to run any decent company - it means you’re either constantly shrinking and so less people doing more work, or as happens all the time with Microsoft they have to hire more people and contractors to fill the gaps, who have to be trained up - taking the time of the remaining staff who could be just getting on with their jobs.

The US tech companies in particular are obsessed with doing it now - in very few other nations do you see companies cutting jobs every year, instead they seem to value what having a close knit experienced team gives you

I wonder when they place new laws or leaders in the companies, will they focus too much on hiring folks that stayed in the company or focus on hiring someone who understand the current customers.

Cause a a wheel has to stop at some point.

It doesn’t matter what they hire if they let loads go every year, it’s an unsustainable stupidity

I think you did not see what i meant. Leadership cannot going with past mindsets were the shareholders make the calls, having a customer oriented mindset is likely the way to go for most of these companies, its just that the old guard refuses to see what is going on.

Ah OK - agreed, but unfortunately I don’t think US tech companies are going to stop anytime soon, they’re terrified of shareholders demanding value and care little about their employees.

If more Microsoft staff join unions and they all went on strike to prevent layoffs, actually costing Microsoft significantly, it might have an effect.

But unfortunately I doubt it’ll happen, and the way things have been going recently in the world I fear any “new guard” would likely be even more ruthless and happy to layoff tons of workers than Nadella is…

Nothing but great news this week. Jesus Christ.

I don’t even want to think about what age I’ll be when this game comes out. Some decisions MS made I guess make sense but this is one of those things that just doesn’t make any sense to me.

This could have been predicted all the way back in 2024. Phil knew that the revenues were cooked his cloud bid was cooked and his management policy failed he decided to just keep making things worse. If he got replaced in 2024 apot of these studios would still be around and alot of layoffs wouldnt have occurred

Let me guess, Don Mattrick is the answer?

What an incredibly shortsighted decision though. How is Id supposed to make their next game? (Don’t say contractors. I know that’s the answer but I hate it.)

He would of done better in truth and you know it. Phil didnt know anything about running a business, when the did the price hikes they weren’t allowed to implement them in the eu cause it was illegal ( very amateurish)
