ROG Xbox Ally X | Review

No way lmao. I’ve given up hope. Xbox shouldn’t have to be doing any of this. Because Nintendo and Sony never had. People are complaining about their libraries, but that hasn’t been an issue with EVERY OTHER handheld. If a console isn’t a console because it doesn’t support the entire library of the previous console, have complete cross entitlement, and complete cross progression for your library then every console is out. Sony and Nintendo still don’t off free cloud saves. The fact that people are still complaining now over things that ARE NOT industry standard and that Xbox is at the forefront pioneering makes it clear that they’ll hate no matter what.

They’ll come up with some other complaint to lobby at Xbox, as that’s their MO, but they won’t be able to use this against Xbox.

I mean they already are with Xbox Play Anywhere not extending to “all” games and some of them even have recently (recently) decided the backwards compatibility already existing on Series consoles isn’t enough. People are just mad right now for reasons that I think aren’t rooted in gaming, but for whatever reason Xbox has become the punching bag. They’ll complain that it doesn’t count if it’s not every game ever. And even if it is they’ll complain that it doesn’t count with some BS like “emulation isn’t native or emulators are fake”. They don’t have reasons that really hold up now, but they sure keep shouting them.

Lol, what a bunch of Sony shills, because if Xbox’s effort with backwards compatibility isn’t enough and they don’t mention the subpar effort by Sony and Nintendo and call it out than we know they’re just a bunch of shills or grifters looking to get people to click on their content to monetize people’s anger or insecurity. The best thing to do is like Jesse told Jon, block them ignore them they will continue to talk this shit all the time.

I’ve seen this around too lately and it is aggravating! “Not all games were included” “Not all games got enhancements”

I’ll never stop being impressed and delighted that we can play games like Assassin’s Creed and Mirror’s Edge at 4K 60 on console, for free, from the original code. No amount of downplaying can take away the unreal accomplishment that Xbox’s BC initiative represented.

I really do have to just ignore it as has been said multiple times, but it does feel like the industry, at least console market, is going to kill itself at this rate. Because the Xbox goal post is constantly moving further in the stratosphere, while Nintedo and Sony can happily rest in the nine circles of hell. People have to realize how ridiculous they’re sounding now with the double standard and how dangerous it is to promote. Again, I really don’t think Microsoft would be acting like a charity regardless right now (with all the internal pressure), but there was a time when they were the by far most generous console maker and it did nothing for them. And now people are moving the goal post yet again and again and again. And I really have to just hope its a vocal minority because otherwise we’re kinda screwed. The industry itself is terrible and rewarding the other platforms for being terrible to consumers just because they’re not Xbox isn’t helping. Getting mad at Xbox for doing stuff that’s objectively good for gaming overall (and should’ve been done a long time ago) is DEFINITELY not helping.

Looks good. The two things holding me back is the price and lack of access to my library of games.

If there is one thing I’d say it will be that Xbox has set a new precedent in the controller ergonomics of handheld gaming. I’d imagine moving forward this will be a stable of handhelds. There is a good chance if ASUS can lower the Xbox Ally from 650 to 500 for Black Friday or the holidays, they may enter Nintendo selling territory and compete well there.

Would getting one from China be cost effective or a no go ?

Insane how well it runs!

Can definitely confirm. Played last night before bed and this thing was hot-knifing thru this.

It’s making it very hard for me to resist lol I’m moving houses though in exactly 1 month and have tons of expenses, or else I think all the pressure from everyone’s positive experiences online might have pushed me over the edge.

I kind of wanted to get a ROG Ally X on the used market, but the ergonomic and bigger battery of the ROG Xbox Ally X really seem to be worth it and I think it’ll have better support over time as well.

Acknowledging that it’s niche, but when it gets to personal, it’s an incredible device.

The marketing sure is working. It seems like it’s been ages since I heard PlayStation or Nintendo.

I never hear Playstation or Nintendo. I mean, from a certain perspective isn’t it kinda bad that no one really cares what they do? I was surprised to check out the latest Pokémon game on Nintendo’s website and see the $10 extra charge for the Switch 2 privelege (now making Pokémon a $70 base game). Surprised because no ones really talking about it. Or maybe my YouTube curation has gotten to be that much of a bubble. But like it goes all the way back to PS Now and the WiiU. No matter what Xbox does IT GETS BUZZ, but people don’t really care when Nintendo or Playstation fail or even succeed. Or at least they don’t seem to. You get the hyperbolic types on socials, but I never see this level of engagement. It’s like that influencer who has 1m followers but their followers just consumer content mindlessly vs one with 250k and their followers and people who don’t follow them (especially the latter) can’t shut up about said influencer for one reason or another.

The Switch 2 has come and gone, the most buzz I saw about it has been the price. But ultimately it will sale expectedly well but it won’t live rent free in everyone’s head 24/7 like Xbox does just naturally :joy:. I know it’s been said here, but if Xbox really left the industry (like completely, if they even stopped being a publisher), I’m pretty sure gaming media and online forums would implode from the silence.

The thing though is I think both PlayStation and Nintendo piggyback and get a boost from the downplaying of Xbox. If Xbox left, I think both would struggle as I think majority would go PC or mobile. All the talking heads and pundits are on Game Pass if Xbox left, they would have to buy their games, and we know how that would go. People tend to buy games they know which is why Nintendo dominates their store. Also, game sales have fallen and without Xbox would get worse, gaming on console will revert to irrelevancy.

Yeah, I don’t think there’d be energy left in the industry without Xbox. The sort of platform culture that’s been built will fade away. And on PC and Mobile things might grow financial, but they don’t really build up the cultures consoles do. Like at most people build a culture around Steam. Like are we really going to enter into the launcher wars? Probably not. People don’t really care when Epic is handing out free games or Amazon and it’s minimal effort to swap between launchers (you don’t even have to open the launcher depending). The gaming industry would probably start to mirror smartphones and PCs as is; not like that’d really be bad, but certainly all the big personalities and platform identities would disappear. Gamers as is are pretty interesting. I don’t really see other lots in the tech industries half as engaged for better or worse, and yet I see so much of it funneled toward Xbox. I think the future will gradually look more and more like the smartphone industry anyway (and PC and other tech industries) but for now Xbox is keeping it alive

At $1600 AUD i said on this forum that I will never ever think about owning this device. Like why is to so expensive. I AM SOO OUTRAGED

So I did what any outraged person would do and I bought one

I never owned a handheld and always wanted to try one so I ended up picking this up primarily for the Grips

My experience has been positive in general for handheld gaming and I am def on board for the next big upgrade in 2 years where most games will be played at 60fps without FG or lossless scaling.

It is not worth getting in to Handheld PCs at this price range and the current software experience

  • I could not get the power profiles to work. I select 17w TDP and it constantly stays above 22.
  • The fse experience asks you reboot everytime you get out of it to normal windows and go back to use fse
  • I don’t know if the vrr is working cause it looks choppy at 45fps
  • Many settings needs fiddling every game
  • Windows being a software company is still a long way off to have a good PC handheld mode experience

Playing outerworlds at 900p with lossless scaling frame gen and getting 60 to 75fps on medium settings. There is heavy artefacts on shadows but it’s def looks good and playable. I can do 2 hour session and feels good

I am super keen to try out new COD MP on this device. If that can work, I will be happy.

I am loving handheld gaming as a whole and can’t wait for it go get better in 2 years time.

Tdp is for your APU, the CPU and GPU, but the device still has to power the screen, controller, Wi-Fi, chip, etc.

I imagine windows mode bloat is either too hard to cleanup to go back to FSE, or restarting is just faster than any other solution, Morrowind-style.
