Is it necessarily an acquisition that could delay their earning report ?
To be fair, those that were saying as such were primarily months prior to some of these very publishers dropping considerably in value relative to the remaining budget Sony themselves had allocated for investments and acquisitions. Also, before someone brings in the “but they can take out a loan”, you should probably be aware of their long-term debt coming due and the infrequency for which Sony has taken out sizable loans over the last 25 years due to said debt and the large degradation in value over said period.
No idea. They delated a report a couple of years ago and I believe nothing happened that time.
Not at all, they’ve delayed reporting their earnings several times with nothing of value being attached.
Not really. But if they acquired Sqare Enix that would be the reason I assume.
I plan on getting a PS5 eventually but damn…. If future NieR or Yoko Taro games are only on that platform I’d be sad.![]()
Can’t wait for Square Enix to get acquired by Tencent and challenge all of the laws and regulations that were put in place to try and stop that ![]()
I think the ones who are going to be affected the most are Nintendo players. As a PC player I actually think that acquisition will improve Square PC ports and will ramp up them ![]()

That was my thought when I saw the FTC just decided to review that deal, maybe they are trying to understand better the video game market? I don’t know, but I welcome any kind of situation that improves the chances of the MS deal going through (FTC wasting time reviweing other deals that have not impacts in their repective markets and now the supposed SE acquisition by SONY)
Square Enix is a perfect fit for Sony especially since they work so closely together anyway. It keeps FFXIV and FF main line games all exclusive to PlayStation and becomes even more of an JRPG console than it already is. If/when Sony acquires Square Enix, I fully expect all of their games to be fully exclusive to PS/PC.
Luckily for me, Square Enix sold off the only two studios that I care about a few days ago to Embracer Group. Tee hee. ![]()
Same, I suspect it will impact Nintendo / Switch users most.
If Sony actually can and ever get SE I’ll never understand how they didn’t want the western studios and IP with it. Like, that part of SE is very similar to the games Sony has the best sucess with, especially with the Marvel licenced games. For that reason I’m doubting they’d want SE now. They basically can get a big part of the benefit without owning them already, in any case I agree with y’all that it would be great because it would really be the least impactful publisher acquisition to Xbox.
Exactly because they have the same games? Like, why would they want Tomb Raider if they have Uncharted. Not to mention the whole support for Avengers. I am pretty sure the main reason why not many was interested was small amounts of profit and support for Avengers.
Because then they’ll have TWO big IPs instead of one, and TR would bring fans from other platforms as well…
Considering that TR IP was sold off in the first place means that it was not that profitable at all. Today Tomb Raider is not the same Tomb Raider years ago.
Most people don’t remember that Tomb Raider and Crystal Dynamics are literally the blueprint for the modern action adventure games, which Naughty Dog’s games are also based on, which themselves are the blueprint for Sony’s modern games post-PS3. Naughty Dog was at one point largely built with former Crystal Dynamics talents, that’s probably how they got their strong technology, cinematic and animation foundations.
I don’t see how Sony wouldn’t have absolutely wanted to have CD and Tomb Raider.
Because of being managed by a horrible publisher, it still can be a really huge AAA blockbuster game again under the right management.
Yup, I think the thing to remember is while Microsoft has the potential to grow a studios market with gamepass and doesn’t need to look at traditional game sales the same way - Sony does not have this. If Sony buys a financially struggling studio that was formerly multiplatform then making it exclusive makes it even LESS financially viable in the shortrun.
Tomb Raider is not that big IP anymore (no matter what people believe), Square Enix run into a ground and to be honest the last entries were essentially generic action games. You could replace MC with any other character - and it would not change much.
By anyway from the perspective of Sony
- CD is stuck with Avengers support
- CD is stuck with Perfect Dark support
- Eidos and CD were not profitable and their IPs are not that important anymore
I see no reason for Sony to want them.
Do you realize that SE had the biggest mainstream IP in recent years, was multiplatform, and they still fulblmed it? Judging the potential of TR or any other IP really based on what Western SE did with it is insane.
All of those points you listed aren’t deal breakers, most acquisitions come with unwanted burdens that you have to deal with or wait out.
The point is that nobody aside Embracer went after those studios thus it means that nobody is interested in those IPs. Some people believed that Tomb Raider is 300m IP by itself. But it is clearly not. Not anymore.
