I agree that Xbox goals are much wider but game releases on steam just make steam deck more appealing while not incentivizing gamepass in anyway. You have to install Windows to get a native Xbox app and only a small subset of users will be willing to go that way (it’s not as easy as installing an app).
It’s upto MS to decide if any Steam deck competes with any potential Series X|S customers.
It’s tricky I agree because right now Microsoft has to do a steep climb to compete with other consoles, and a venture this risky could ruin momentum. However it does seem very appealing to me if I can have access to my entire xbox library and also be able to stream xcloud on it. However, unsure if the risk is worth it for Microsoft due to many not having an established library because reason Steam Deck might work because many have an established steam library of some sort.
I just know I would be all over one if there is a xbox handheld that could play games in 1080p. However, the risk def outweighs the reward for one at the moment. Lastly, I feel it’s something Microsoft should closely monitor and could be something they can utilize for next gen
For MS, they are still playing on WIndows but Steam Deck is running on Linux. If MS were so open, they would also release their games on linux and Mac but they don’t because there is an obvious boundary they don’t want to cross.
I think many people want a handheld that can play the games we want to play. Idgaf about most Nintendo games, but something with my Xbox or Steam games on it? Sign me up.
Well, what i really want is an Xbox handheld who can run games natively. I think that’s what the Steam deck does with its games, or did I misunderstand that?
I dont know if i would call it a “mistake” or the often said “money on the table”. But the problem in the past of making a dedicated handheld was it required a split pipeline, it’s own seperate games etc, the appeal and factor of the steam deck, and what’s capable with where modern technology has gone, is that this is basically just a portable pc that’s even basically running a cutdown version of what’s in the ps5/xbox already. I dont know, it wouldnt be the worst idea or splitting resources all too much in this day and age if they made a device that was a portable xbox (or just a handheld pc) and could be a portable gamepass machine. and being honest, it’s not like say a good portion of the stuff microsoft puts out in the Surface Line isnt a bigger waste and with nicher appeal than such a device (specifically looking at the surface duo).
I’m seriously keen on this device simply because of how much functionality it has. The fact you have so much functionality from playing games on steam, to potentially word processing and also turning it into an Xbox Game Pass machine. It is a really neat start to something which would develop into a new generation of PC based devices…I like it!
Why on earth would people want a Switch pro to play a game they can play 10x better on another system???
I want a switch pro so I can play Astral Chain at 60FPS, so i can play Xenoblade at higher resolutions than 720p. BOTW2 at 1080p 60FPS or other exclusives like Calamity wars at the performance thats acceptable.
A steam Handheld is cool. But in reality its just a mini computer with what looks like bad control layout.
Would it be cool to play Steam games on the go? sure but I’m struggling to see the appeal for this. Effectively its an indie box thats more powerful than switch.
Also to those moaning about SD storage. I mean that thing is small. wtf do people want? a 1TB internal storage? it has SD card slot. Just buy a cheap 256GB card or something.
Lets be real here. Most people who will buy this will do it for an easier hassle free way of portable emulation and it has the cPU to easily run most emulators from PS2 era and before.
Don’t kid yourself into thinking you’re gonna buy this to play friggin Cyberpunk or next gen games on the go.
MS don’t need to make a handheld. They have 2 consoles on the market and are focusing on Streaming. Having TV sticks getting Xcloud on many devices should be their focus. Not making another hamstrung hardware that would require what? even more development kits and effort to put games on?
MS aren’t stupid. If MS wanted to do a Handheld…the Xbox Series S would have been one.
I mean MS must be rubbing their hands at this. If Nintendo refuse to put Xcloud on switch. Valve certainly won’t. Just another device to play Xbox games. Both Xcloud and Natively for whatever games that can run.
Battery life appears to be horrendous, way too inhibiting to take this on the go.
I’m not a fan of the ergonomics and making something so large, and almost three times as heavy as a Vita, kinda defeats the purpose of portability.
The storage on the lower end models is so vanishingly small I feel they exist only to advertise a low price point. I’ve seen plenty discussing playing FFXIV in bed, blissfully unaware that Endwalker has a minimum requirement of 80GB. Playing off an SD card would be absolutely soul destroying.
I don’t get the Game Pass portable argument either, it’s like people are collectively forgetting xCloud is a thing. If you’re at home, there’s Remote Play too. Both of these options at a higher resolution than the Steam Deck and basically for free using the phone you already have.
The only thing I see this doing as a niche is portable emulation at a much lower price point than GPD etc offer. Shiny new toy factor is blinding most, myself included, but when I actually think about it I can’t justify buying one of these at all.
