I dunno but that’s for them to sort out
Make categories that make sense, I’m not saying small in one and big in another is the perfect way to do it as maybe there wont even be enough games to nominate but the current system is literally wrong

Independent in the way that it isn’t owned by another gaming publisher like Xbox, Sony, EA, Ubisoft and so on. CDPR is the biggest studio not owned by a publisher.
The system is fine. You normally associate indie with smaller studios. I really don’t know why Mat Piscatella acts surprised that Larian is not in this category.
The only weird nomination is Dave the Diver.
They could just keep calling it indie games, not allow games developed by studios owned by gaming publishers and put a budget cap for participating in this category. This way BG3 wouldn’t be allowed to compete because of it’s budget.
All I’m going to say is Street Fighter 6 was snubbed.
I always understood as “independent” means your creative work and decision making isnt controlled by some other entity or publisher with big money. If you are a public traded company you have to report and listen to your shareholders every quarter or fiscal year.
I also don’t consider Dave the Diver an independent game ![]()
Another problem with defining best games of the year is the lack of democratization of gaming. This means unlike movies released at the cinema (which anyone can go & see, wherever, whenever), all these video games are locked behind a paywall within an expensive ecosystem.
If someone wants to enjoy Spiderman 2, they need to fork over a minimum of $520 (digital edition ps5 + the $70 game).
I feel this very real economic & market factor precludes games from being treated like an artform or something which can be tangibly compared to one another (not to mention hardware related differences as well, like Nintendo’s games are not made for the same level of tech as Sony’s).
I’m not even talking about BG3, DtD is what makes it factually wrong and it’s not just here
Everyone just says “indie game” when they really mean lower budget or smaller scale, Towerborne would get called an indie game purely because of how it looks and the type of game it is
Hell, I remember seeing loads of people call Hi Fi Rush an indie game and that wasn’t cheap at all
Yeah I think this would work
I’m shocked.

I’m attending a wedding celebration that day, but if not, I will probably skip it regardless.
I will catch up later to hopefully the trailer of any Xbox exclusive.
I tried to watch a few years ago and the whole time I kept wondering why so many people watch it and like it. The entire show was somehow more cringy than the Oscars, and after seeing Geoff run through 5 awards in the span of 15 seconds so he could quickly go back to more advertisements, I decided to turn it off and vowed I would never watch it again. It was just gross and actually made me angry.
To those of you who say you watch it for the trailers, you do know those trailers will be immediately available on youtube, right? You don’t have to subject yourself to such punishment. ![]()
what’s the other game he’s talking about?
Also, Chained Echoes was robbed because it’s the much better game than sea of stars, but it missed the cutoff date last year
whats the cutoff date for the game awards?

Apparently it’s a no show for Golden Joystick Awards too.
CDPR was worth 10B$ in 2020, which is more than most publishers. The term indie had some meaning in the xbox360/ps3 area. Now it embrases a scope so wide than it should not even be used.

“That’s what you get for releasing on the ugly box! Bleh!!!”
But seriously, that’s right. I know many who still has it as GOTY. Sad.
Did Starfield kill all of these people’s parents or something? This crusade against the game is so shameful, disgrace for gaming journalism. These the same mfs that will then pretend they care about developers.
Honestly, we should not expect any fair treatment from the Game Awards when the committee that decide what to nominate consist of Metro or Edge or Eurogamer, basically the wannabe posh Michelin Star of outlets from Europe( I haven’t even mentioned PC Gamer etc). A lot of these folks have nostalgia and favoritism/bias ingrained on their reviews.
