Warzone is fine and should be completely split from the main games.
The online multiplayer mode is what needs looked at next. They need to rethink multiplayer. I used to play it all the time, but it just gets worse and worse every year. And I’m hesitant to even bother because I know in a years time all my progress will be meaningless cause a new one will be releasing.
They need a persistent multiplayer service that gets updated, etc. but doesn’t start fresh year to year. I don’t know exactly what that looks like. I’d also like classic multiplayer being rolled up in this. So there could be a OG MW2 mode, that allows you to play MW2 exactly as it was. If you were a fan of BO2, then have a mode, playlist for that.
That will take a lot of burden of dev teams having to create a “new” multiplayer experience every year.
The series was desperatly in need of a break and a refresh. Phil identified this and gave them the time. You cant keep pumping out Halo or Cod multiple times a gen. The IP gets damaged. We literally saw that this year with Vanguard.
As much as it makes business sense to keep the CoD factory going, the insistence of churning out a major AAA game in 3 year span has ultimately killed every property in the studio and has likely made it a less desirable place to work.
It would be kinda hypocritical for Microsoft to preach creative freedom and being a great place to work while running a sweat shop to put out CoD every year. Games are also taking longer and longer to make.
So yeah, I dunno. Yearly makes sense for business but doesn’t fit the Microsoft culture.
It would be cool if they handle COD like Forza and have a COD every 2 years. However, unsure how shareholders will feel about that since that game makes insane revenue every year
Imo cod is reaching a point where putting one out every year simply is not sustainable. Games are taking longer and longer to make and you can only throw so much money at that problem before you start getting serious diminishing returns
Yeah, I think a COD every 2 year can work just keep on updating it and focus on warzone, and should be good. Also, I feel 2 year wait would be enough to drive COD community third for a new COD in rotation. Really intrigued how they handle COD
Yeah they either need to swap to a Once every two years schedule, or try something along the lines of 1 year off, 2/3 years on, repeat kinda cycle. Something to just give the games more time to cook and the devs more breathing room
I see COD staying yearly with Infinity Ward, Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games having three year development cycles. All three studios will probably be expanded to where the external support will be minimal.
A yearly cod just shouldn’t have a new multipalyer imo. It doesn’t give enough breathing room for the game to evolve. Modern Warfare was the best multiplayer in the series for years and in a year is replaced by a worse game.
COD is too big of a franchise to have it sit for multiple years. It sells 10m+ every year like clockwork and until that decreases significantly, there’s no reason to change it.
I can see COD 2023 having a campaign and MP. COD 2024 will have their own campaign and MP. I think they should do an historic, present day and futuristic campaigns. One studio picks whichever one they want to do or are best at and every three years, you get that campaign type.
So for example, Infinity Ward is doing MW2 which is basically present day for 2022 so in 2025, there would be a new present day campaign. In 2023, it could be futuristic which would then happen again in 2026. 2024 would be historic which would then happen again in 2027.
All three campaigns would have their different weapons, gadgets abilities, etc. Plus futuristic could add in some sci-fi elements but to an extent. Infinite Warfare was pretty damn cool with the shooting in outer space and then blowing up windows where the people inside going flying outward.
This would also keep the campaigns fresh because you’re getting a different type every year for three years so in 9 years, you would have 3 historic, present day and futuristic campaigns.
Thinking about what I just wrote, this also can apply to the MP. The MP would be based around the setup of the campaign but each year would be different like the campaign but in that fourth year which would be a “repeat” of the first year, the MP could then just have added modes and maps.
This way, every campaign and MP is fresh and with them being on a three year cycle, you wouldn’t feel like you’re playing the exact same game every year. And by the time you get to the next iteration, it’s been three years so it wouldn’t feel like you’re playing the same stuff as the year before because technically, you’re not.
The problem is it takes every studio that Activision has to sustain the CoD machine. Their independent studios that were putting out games years ago are now support studios because putting out AAA games on a 3 year development cycle is wild. Only gets worse as games get more complex.
Yeah, true but this is before adding more people to each studio and if they were working from home, I can understand why everyone was working on COD. I don’t remember seeing COD having 5 studios work on one game until 2020. All pre-Covid, you had them all on 3 year dev cycles with Raven as the support team. Or at least that’s how I remember it being. But correct me if im wrong.
