Xbox multi platform discussion

It is probably that. If the PlayStation fails Sony is going to be hit hard which is probably why they have been pivoting more towards anime and movies.

They just had a Dev Direct, with the message of all games shown are Play Anywhere, on Cloud and Game pass and people are still asking to be pampered. Just how much more pampering could you want? The games may go to other platforms but at a charged price and very little value. I think Xbox is doing good.

You said “the old model is only dead at Xbox because Sony doesn’t put all games on PC day one.”

My point is that this is a totally arbitrary standard. The old model was “our games, only on our console.” That model is 100% dead at both Sony and Xbox. Saying it doesn’t count as multiplat if it makes them more revenue would mean Xbox isn’t multiplat either

Doesn’t look like the PlayStation is failing given the PS5 is already ahead of the PS4 sales in the USA while Xbox console sales are behind the Xbox One in the USA. I think the trouble for both is the cost of making games rather than number of hardware sold.

I like to see how much money XBox makes with its new path. All I see is revenue and not Net Profit regarding Xbox results. It would be nice to see how much it costs to run Xbox with how much Xbox brings in.

Listening to both the Destin and the Pena/Parris interview with Phil, I think Xbox still need to a much better job at marketing why someone would buy a Xbox console over say playing their games on PC/PS/Switch. In addition just generally explaining what features/services they offer over the competition, the play anywhere statement was a good start at the direct but most people still don’t know/understand.

As much as I disliked it (putting it mildly) when the news started to appear about Xbox shipping more games to other systems…my worries are all gone, I have a good feeling about all this.

relp, it sounds like every game will be multiplatform going forward. I assume the recent games weren’t multiplatform due to being late in development which is why we’re getting delayed ports like Indy.

It’s going to be interesting to see how they position next xbox console because at the moment I don’t think gamepass ($20/month sub) + $500 console is that enticing if games are guaranteed on other platforms. Innovation will be key to see how they can keep me and others into buying a next gen xbox console because if it’s similar to PS6, then that’s a skip for me. I am okay with saving $500+ and a recurring sub and buying games individually

It’s why I have shifted purchases to playstation or games that support play anywhere because uncertain about hardware future

I still find it funny how warped and brain washed gamers got to the point where the old school Console model seems like natural.

Imagine if Sony pictures made a movie and then put out blu rays but those blu rays only played in Sony Blu Ray players?

How stupid does that sound? Seemingly lots of gamers are having a hard issue extending their mind outside of the forced console norm and into how things in every other industry usually work. Gaming is only different cause people’s brains have been hyper focused on sports team mentality gaming because they have been suckered by certain companies (Sony) into an Us VS Them mentality for propaganda sakes.

Also way back in the day Console exclusives were more about how each planform was VERY custom and very different and you could have games as they were made that simply would not run on other custom hardware.

That has not been a thing for almost 20 years and is now at the point where each console is simply just a similar spec’d PC with a different OS on it.

What was potentially a barrier where consoles simply were too different to in hardware to handle everything is now to the point where every game put out can run fairly easily on every piece of hardware, Even Switch got some crazy ports of AAA games,

People are just too stubborn and stupid and caught up in warring factions based on NOTHING to step out and start enjoying a gaming market where you literally just PLAY the games you want to play on whatever device and where ever you are and then please STFU about it.

The hardware is to the point of power where EVERYTHING pretty much can be played on any device, so why do we want to put artificial barriers on that so some dumbass Fanboys can continue their Sports team mentality to the hobby?

It’s like do you actually want to play some damn video games or just root for a company and a plastic box? Cause these are 2 different hobbies and I’m a gamer.

Sometimes I just want to shake gamers and ask them why they are so stupid and closed minded? Why are so many people so focused on stupid dumbass shit like hardware sales and console wars? WTF is wrong with some people that their whole identity is tied to a companies plastic box that they have to upgrade anyway every 5-8 years? It’s not like you were born with a PS1 and now 30 years later you still carry around that PS1, you’ve had to change hardware for gaming anyway dozens of times in the last 30+ years why the fuck does it matter what name is stamped on the box?

Why are some gamers so fucking ridiculous like this? Please make it stop cause I really like video games and have been playing them since 1977 but “GAMERS” and the gaming community is a toxic stupid ass mess of people and assholes that make gaming LESS fun and MORE frustrating.

I think people/gamers just want to know they made the best choice when they purchase a product, be it a phone, console, etc.

Just like if someone buys some specific brand TV because they have a technology that gives better contrast even if the sound system is slightly worse, but months/years after, the other brands get an update to get that same contrast system, even if the first TV is still the same, i can understand the buyers “feeling bad”, not the best comparison i know but you get my point.

This said, and even if, like some other people, i don’t like this change and what it means for Xbox as a console, i totally agree with Spencer on the “Software over hardware”, i’m excited what this third party thing will mean to the studios and how the sales of their games will evolve significantly, the potential for their games is huge from now on, they have to focus on landing bangers now which could help some studios to grow even bigger.

But yeah, that “it’s just 4 games and not a change on our strategy” from just 11 months ago was BS, it’s not that they learnt anything from these games, this was the plan from even before that “Xbox update” video from last year, and i think sometimes not talking is better than just straight up lying with that PR shit, i feel Phil/MS’s losing a lot of credibility lately, at least for me.

The health of the business is not measured by console sales otherwise Xbox could easily give out more consoles. Sony doesn’t even tout the PS5 at their reports. The PS5 is being sold at a loss maybe not as high as Xbox and at the end of the day the point of selling the console is to get many more users. That is mitigated if they can get those users on PC and other devices, consoles are not all and with all the consoles sold on PlayStation their engagement is still low which is why they are depending on PC.

Concord cost a pretty penny and that loss is not easily mitigated and what about all this game cancelations so much spent and now gone. Another thing is Shuhei said PlayStation would have been closed after the PS3 gen had it not been for their TV division which bailed them out, surely, they sold about 90 million consoles, but those consoles were not profitable, and their software engagement wasn’t profitable either.

Yes, it would be nice.

Non of it was BS at the time, shit has been pretty chaotic in the world since COVID for EVERY industry, people should have just accepted “Case by Case” and moved on but everyone keeps needling for some EXACT permanent statement and then go back and nit pick it and say they were lying which is stupid given the changes in the industry and how fucked up the world is now and how much the world has changed since COVID.

Plans change and the world changes, if you demand that not to happen then you really would have wasted money on Xbox games cause without pivot’s Xbox would not exist if they still relied 100% solely on hardware sales.

Do you want a platform with a single point of failure in a volatile and picky market coupled with serious issues going on all around the world or a platform that has has dozens of different revenue streams and no single point of failure that is meeting people where they are?

I’m much more confident in buying Xbox games and services and hardware now knowing that regardless of what trend or disaster happens my gaming purchases do not depend on the health of ONE single piece of hardware.

We have now a hardware agnostic Eco system where Xbox is one of the biggest Game publishers on the entire planet with IP’s and Studio’s that have been my favorite for decades and I’m now not worried that a single hardware mistake will bring it all down.

That makes me more likely to keep buying into it than run away from it, why would people do that just to get trapped in another single platform eco system at the whims of single hardware sales?

I hear you. It’s hard to take face value of anything him and his team says. In the past 12 months they’ve been saying a lot of bs. They should’ve been upfront about everything because it’s clear this was the plan and there’s no real case by case other than being too late in development to create port or game won’t sell much units, so no point. I think they burned a lot of goodwill with that update they did last year because it doesn’t take less than 12 months to go back on what was said.

Anyway, I have gamepass until nonmember 2027, so it’s exciting to see what’s releasing on that service. I am just unsure how they’ll navigate next gen. It seems like might be a lot of work to move units.

I hear you and wholly agree. I don’t see why games can’t be the way movies are on Blu-ray or DVD where your player plays all movies irrespective of the company making it.

I guess this is why Xbox has to go through with this because if they don’t show and prove the model out you will continue to have these silly debates over exclusives. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is out and yet how many PlayStation players are playing it, sharing screen shots and so on, the number is very few, but the game is getting some love from the Xbox crowd and also from PC mainly because of Xbox Game Pass. I liked the Phil interview I think innovations like Quick resume are only possible when the hardware is called to speak for itself.

Personaly I don’t have a good feeling about this. We don’t have the whole picture in front of us especially on the hardware stuff but as it is now I am not very optimistic on the whole Xbox hardware future. Hope I am wrong though.

Honestly, until i know more about the intentions for the hardware itself, as i learned not to take what Phil said with any face value, i will just be buying stuff that is play anywhere at the moment, cause i am somewhat still uncertain if this whole strategy at the moment is gonna pan out the way they think it will. Future is always uncertain and i am fearful that this gambit is not gonna play out in their favor in the end and risk losing decades of libraries cause of their need for additional growth and spreding too thin and ignoring other vital components.

I will say for those still in doubt like i am, to wait the remaining year and see where things will stand for the hardware side of stuff and what exactly Xbox has in mind for players of Xbox consoles.

Also we will get more details on the 29th of this month, when Microsoft talks more about its fiscal year and where that stands for consumers of the platform.

Also, i remember someone on Twitter mentioning that he has a contact on one of the studios in Xbox Game Studios telling them they wished Phil never talked about their plans for multiplat as he fears the implications for them in the long run. Which is understandable, they don’t want to piss of the userbase too much as they are needed for their future efforts more so than Playstation or Nintendo users.

Am also concerned about this whole thing more so then i thought, heck am making preparations just in case i do not like what i see. In fact many users are likely watching what pans out this year mostly cause i think some think Higher ups are prioritizing Plastation and Nintendo more then Xbox, even though Gamepass is a thing that works out, which is silly but i can comprehend the sentiment.

I just hope hardware and the ecosystem does not perish because of this whole new angle. I have over a million on games in the platform and if that is gone? They will be a reckoning not just for me but many users and rightfully so. Do i think its likely to occur,? No. Do i think they need to be very careful with this strategy? Absolutely, costumers are not stupid and will call them out on anything they think will disrupt their ecosystem and brand.

I do get you. But I just don’t see the point of worrying about it any longer. I do genuinely believe we will get a next gen for Xbox hardware, meaning console and the much talked about handheld and after that? We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

If game output by third parties had gone down drastically I would have been concerned, but apart from some odd ones out there such as Wukong and a few others it’s actually quite great. More and more Japanese support and they actually partnered with them to make Ninja Gaiden 4 a reality.

If you were in the XboxEra Discord you would have seen Tom Warren talking about how this “worry about future hardware” makes no sense to him, because he’s been trying to tell people for a year that they’re going to have MORE hardware support than ever, moving forward. A console that can play all of your PC games, but still a console at its heart.

That’s why I can’t wait to see what their next gen will be like and hopefully won’t be 2028, but more like the rumored late 2026.

I am sure we will get a new Xbox console and probably a handheld. What I am not sure is how good these consoles will sell and if people will embrace them. They will probably be expensive. Either way Ms had to change the rules of the game and this might be the correct decision. But as always with MS it’s the execution and the timing that’s the problem. Are they gonna be on point this time?
