Xbox multi platform discussion

I thought DD will stop the doom n gloom, but I was wrong, so if you think xbox are dying, feel free to leave then

As a brazilian I believe you would know about the hardware situation over here and in other regions. There’s certainly reason to be worried.

Just, no. Tom Warren has been trying to make it clear, MORE hardware and not less. With Xbox having their own systems and others can make more powerful versions if they so choose.

Again, just give them time to say what the actual vision is.

That will never pass muster in every country that it has to. Zero chance.

They made a forward compatibility team, the entire point of it is to secure your library.

I’ll say this now, in general. I do not want to see this type of worst case scenario “what if everything goes terribly!?!?” style of posting leaking into other threads, please.

I have seen parts of Destin’s interview. Like I said the manpower is needed otherwise Avowed and South of Midnight would be simultaneous also I mentioned PC games like WOW which I think has too much content and would require a redo for console, so I don’t see it happening. My point was also if you look at Ubisoft that has the most developers, they are not pushing out 10 to 20 plus games so if Xbox wants to push out that many games on all platforms, they will require a lot of manpower especially if this multiplatform idea is new but yes, I heard the multiplatform move clearly I just think like Jez said they will do it based on their ability. Ninja Gaiden has taken 6 to 7 years that’s some time.

PC and Nintendo probably do feel so but I always get both in my case. I do feel if Xbox can get this OS thing right which carries forth your library and their store and player things will change. To me this is more like when you had the HD DVD format vs Bluray or the VHS vs Betamax. In the end one format for all is always best. Sony is not in a good place to lead the industry so adapting to their formal for all doesn’t work. However, we could in the future see TVs play games natively through natively installed OS or apps. I also think that might be when exclusivity for games makes sense. For example, with all that Xbox says they haven’t put any of their games on the Epic games store or Gog. Steam is the only place on PC they support at the moment. I think if next gen they start rolling out their OS to big manufacturers like Samsung, LG to make hardware changes will occur. For example partners carrying Xbox hardware could push for exclusivity for their OS.

The usual suspects aren’t operating in good-faith and haven’t for months, it’s unbelievably tiring to read.

Bro, nothing wrong with buying a PS, losing all my library, and spending more money than before for less games. It’s obviously Xbox’s fault that I am now forced to do this! Phil’s lies have to stop!

I do not understand the correlation you’re making here. The DD was all about the games (which it should be) and it was fantastic. The above discussion is about their strategy, communication & hardware, which is entirely different.

I think everyone in this chat are still fans of Xbox and want the best for them, otherwise they wouldn’t be here, however it’s possible be excited about their games but not their wider business model. I personally am super excited about their future line up as it’s the best it’s been since the X360 (or perhaps even better).

I think most Xbox fans are just tired of waiting, if anything it’s almost a motto for them now. Many of my friends have moved back to PC (where Steam is the defacto store) despite several of them being very console orientated.

I think realistically most of us knew they would put all their games everywhere once the flood gate opened but they still haven’t provided clear messaging about why we should continue to invest in Xbox hardware, instead of just moving to PC where we can access all our games (which is what it’s all about).

Enthusiasts will understand GamePass (which is on PC anyway) but other features like Play Anywhere and Quick Resume are lost on casuals.

Personally re-reading the above posts (inc my own) I don’t think it is necessary bad faith to ask Xbox to communicate these plans better.

Historically the unique games on each console platform has always been their unique selling point. If one of them decides to take this USP away then they need to do a better job at explaining to consumers why their hardware and ecosystem is still unique enough to spend $500 on a device (or realistically $700+ next gen). Especially when the majority of their friends/family already have the competitors platform which now has access to even more games (as at the end of the day it’s about the games).

I think we can both agree that restricting your games to a specific device is stupid and it would be a different story if all of the platforms were releasing their games everywhere but it’s just Xbox.

For example the Thomas Mahler tweet that @Staffy shared below mentions the console industry is the equivalent of DVD’s only being playable on Sony devices which is true, it is not consumer friendly and it doesn’t make sense. However in reality that is still the situation today, as many shows are locked behind a specific subscription whether that be Netflix, Disney+ or HBO Max as that is their USP (it’s no surprise many revert to piracy).

Assuming their plans are to nudge the Xbox console playerbase to PC it would make sense and resolve many of these issues, however they still need to communicate why to buy Xbox hardware (and use Windows Store) instead of:

  • Buying a PC/PC handheld and using Steam.
  • Buying a PS/Nintendo which also has access to Xbox games.

Either way Xbox is ‘safe’ as they are have a fantastic lineup of titles which will generate a huge number of sales (even if the majority of these end up being at 70%). However I just don’t understand the incentive of their current hardware with this strategy and I say that as a Xbox fan.

What do they need to communicate? They have made it clear that their vision is games first and no gate keeping. Their games are going everywhere. The Xbox division is now bigger than windows and is now more responsible to the shareholders, Phil Spencer mentioned the business aspect in the interview.

The way I see it NextGen they will develop new hardware that will also serve as a standard for how gaming will be from there on. A handheld and a standard hybrid console. I will be willing to bet the next console will serve as a prototype for partners like Samsung, LG and maybe other partners in different countries. This way they provide an OS just like with phones and a store and I’m betting once these partners come in, they will solve the hardware sales issue who even knows they may incorporate the technology into their other devices. What Xbox showed with Ninja Gaiden publishing for multiplatform is something that is new they could look to publishing many third-party multiplatform games from here on.

But IJ isn’t on Ps5 yet, it’s coming later, I believe it would’ve gotten better reception by these people if it would’ve been on PS5 at launch, it looks like we got to a point where if you don’t release your game on PS5 and it doesn’t blow up on PC and Xbox that a good portion of gamers won’t care and it will totally impact conversations around the game, this is a consequence of Microsoft not caring and trying harder to get back to that 50/50 console market share split they once had during the 360 days, if they were there they probably wouldn’t need to release that many games on PS.

Anyway, on a positive note, loving all these SP games Xbox has been releasing, Hellblade 2, Indiana Jones, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black Remaster (banger so far btw), Avowed, South of Midnight and then Doom… all in the span of a year from May 2024 to May 2025, that is wow, amazing! :star_struck:

I actually do believe that if Xbox would’ve been doing this since 5 years ago that they would’ve been getter far better console sales today.

This.

It’s a bit sad how the community does its best to turn on each other. This past year has been horrible in that aspect.

I still think they need some exclusives to entice users, hardware innovation is great but if its do great why is there no incentive to buy it if all games are everywhere and that leads to studios dicthing the platform later on. That is a blow to the brand that we will not see for the time being but in next gen. I do honestly hope that this whole multiplat thing is a phase and once things settle down they can begin producing stuff that is exclsuive to its ecosystem(Console, Pc and Cloud).

Also one thing that a good frined of mine said spoke to me: How come the interviews don’t discuss stuff about the games that are - exclusively - skipping Xbox? At Xbox we all win, right? That’s there little slogan so how come that is still a thing, ignoring the moneyhats playstation would need to do.

Yes games, but they need to communicate clearly why people would buy Xbox hardware now (or going forward).

If it’s that it’s a GamePass machine that’s fine but I personally don’t see casuals buying it. They will stick with Nintendo and PlayStation, even more so now that they can play Xbox games there too. That or more people will just transition to PC where they can access Gamepass + PlayStation, Xbox & PC games.

You can tout that your console has got the best features or is the ‘most powerful’ but the games are what matters and why people will buy it.

The other factor is what your friends/family use (which hasn’t been Xbox since the X360) so why would they switch now?!

Yea, not to pat myself on the back but this is pretty much exactly what I said several posts up.

This exclusive mindset in Gaming for hardware is something pretty unique to this industry itself and every other entertainment industry has either moved on from this business model or never went their to begin with.

IE the Example given of Sony Movies on disc only working on Sony Blu ray players, EVERYONE agree’s that would be stupid if it worked that way but somehow it became the norm in gaming and a HUGE section of the gaming community just has brain rot at the thought of NOT doing that.

Then add in the other factors brought up where consoles are just standard PC’s now with a custom OS and that physical gaming is about dead and streaming is picking up a user base.

It all points to Console hardware not really being unique or even needed anymore in the previous sense and being needed even less going forward.

I just find it so bizarre that Gamers have such an issue mentally grappling with the idea that Xbox can be successful without having the #1 console sales. They can and are and have been and will be in the future. You NEVER have to be #1 in sales in your business to survive, if you did Pepsi would never have existed and Sony would not have been able to create a foothold on gaming when Nintendo was king in sales Burger King and Arby’s and KFC would not exist.

Alot of this is Fanboy wish casting from Sony fans who grew up in a cult, but for the rest of the gaming community EVERYONE can see the hardware agnostic future that is already kind of upon us and will just get even more blurred over time.

Very likely in 20 years our gaming experience is just a front end App on whatever device has a screen and your games/saves and eco system just goes wherever you want to play it in whatever form factor and the games and fidelity and experience is the same regardless of the screen you play it on.

Geforce Now is a pretty good example, I can play my Xbox and Steam and Battle Net and Epic owned Games on my Phone/TV soon to be steam deck and Quest 3.

Many different devices, One app that curates my games from many different app stores and lets me play the maxxed out PC version of the games on any screen.

That is what the future holds as probably the default experience and the old Hardware console war days will look pretty silly in the rear view mirror.

There is 99% chance that this won’t happen… But being able to generate revenue and profit from rival hardware might give xbox an incentive to price the next gen xbox even more aggressively.

1% of chance and you will have better priced hardware with better priced services and games.

That’s enticing enough to buy into xbox hardware.

As for me, I will buy xbox hardware if they use Nvidia tech for RT and DLSS. AMD tech not good enough for future AI tech in games.

But we are reaching a point where “#1 Console hardware sales” are not only a hollow victory but do not ensure that you can just keep yourself in the old school realm of MANY single hardware exclusives in a 100% walled garden.

Sony is going the same route as Xbox, we’ve seen the signs and also seen the games trickle out from Sony on other platforms. It is just a matter of time. The only thing soon to keep that from happening is the fact Sony fucked up their 1st party and won’t have ANY games coming for awhile on any platform and it will be a slow trickle till next gen.

So things are looking like this for the next 2-4 years

Xbox will have much larger 1st party presence in major games coming out all the time at a very regular cadence which also fills the need for Day one Gamepass content,

Sony will be having a multi year first party drought and probably still take Hardware sales crown.

I’d much rather be on the Xbox side of things cause as a gamer Sony selling more hardware does nothing for me, Sony fans seem to enjoy prancing around the internet trolling every other gamer but that really isn’t a gaming activity it’s just being a dickhead.

People REALLY gotta decouple their brain from thinking Hardware Sales are the end all and be all of gaming.
