Xbox Pulls Funding for IO Interactive's 'Project Fantasy'

Least surprising news today, but with the success of 007, you’d think they’d want to give this a shot, although it’s not attached to a known franchise…

Before anyone ask, OD is safe and in fact, Microsoft did reply. Check in layoff thread.

As for this, well, it has been too long, but hope to see it one day.

This just sucks especially after how great First Light was. Hopefully IO can use the work elsewhere. Among all the rumors the internet isn’t going to take this well. Especially with how much people liked First Light. My feed is already full of “How Microsoft wasted hundreds of billions in Xbox” vidoes

First light is based on James Bond though, so that probably did a lot of the heavy lifting to be honest. Their new game is an unknown IP, much harder to sell.

Probably but I never mentioned potential sales. I’m just saying based on IO’s previous work and most recent, I was very interested in playing any game from them. Especially a rumored new IP and fantasy related game. To that same effect, regardless of whether they would have bought it or not gamers will definitely be up in arms against Xbox for harming such a beloved developer. Maybe they wouldn’t have bought a non James Bond game, but that conveniently won’t come up as the world mourns and talks about how it’s all Xbox’s fault.

Of course it is. The one game that I don’t give a flying fuck about.

Beggar can’t be chooser.

This and Everwild man. I was so excited for those as online fantasy RPGs. Then just poof. Project Blackbird sounded cool too. And heck, now with Destiny gone Xbox could’ve filled a void with a Sci fi online RPG.

Had no interest in Everwild since they never showed the actual gameplay and gameplay loop. Forgot about Blackbird. Yeah, that sounded awesome.

All these companies suck nowadays and who would have thought that slowly but surely, Nintendo is becoming the best of the three. lmao

Granted, it’s a low bar but still, im shocked!! lol

I’d say Nintendo has always been the least consumer friendly and still are, but they’ve also always been the most consistent as a publisher and still are. They’re like Apple or Disney. You can hate them as a customer, but can’t deny their consistent quality as a business (for games, not so much home consoles).

Agree completely.

They rarely acquire anybody, rarely layoff anybody and rarely cancel games or shut down studios. At least not from what I remember in the last decade or so. They keep the game budgets in check and have third party development studios work on their games which allows them to keep their main internal studios free to develop the bigger main titles.

The worst I can think of is Metriod. Generally speaking companies like Apple and Nintendo especially are very very cautionary with their growth whereas other companies might grow too much during an economic upturn and then have to downsize during a downturn. I’ll say they’re also really lucky in that they have a customer base willing to absorb those extra costs. Spend less, charge more, and keep it consistent. Unsurprisingly it works really well. Nintendo is a much smaller business in total gaming revenue than Sony and Microsoft (like they make like half as much gaming revenue), but they’re far more stable. And on the other hand it works way WAY better for Apple as they make similar moves but are one of the biggest companies in the world. I hate both companies, but they kinda just do what they’re gonna do and customers respond well to that consistency in strategy.
