As I said I think thereâs absolutely no question that they are committed to gaming, and that they are committed to consoles, I mean ffs they went in with two consoles, theyâre IN, the question is just how in the are they in the consoles, a lot of stuff seems to suggest their console growth isnât pushed as hard as it could or needs, between production and shipments, global marketing and deals/bundles etc. As a console first user I definitely want Xbox growth pushed higher than that, not just to win some argument but that means support will be better from devs and publishers.
There was a Diablo IV bundle but with Starfield being a Microsoft IP and the biggest new IP since Gears of War, you would think that Microsoft would have planned to have a custom console that matches the controller and headset with the game packed in.
Look at Spider Man 2 for Sony with PS5. Granted, the game will sell but plenty of current PS5 owners will buy that bundle just because they want the custom console. Itâs fucking brilliant because it works and sells.
Worst part is that Microsoft if im remembering correctly started custom consoles during the Xbox 360 generation so you would think that they would already have this planned for a game the caliber and importance of Starfield.
Iâm sure the consoles are selling but I believe Series S will slow down because majority want Series X and they canât get them. Microsoft needs to stop shoving out Series S which made sense for cross-gen and due to Covid but three years later, not so much. Get Series X consoles out there. Itâs what fans and consumers now want.
Weâll be on the 20th Xbox iteration and people will still be claiming theyâre leaving hardware.
Also have to laugh at âcertain peopleâ still pushing the Xbox series S holding things back when the PS4 is still being actively supported.
The fact that these idiotic takes are coming from industry folk that are supposed to know better shows no matter how engrained in an industry you are, itâs not going to help if youâre just a moron
Yeah âXbox is getting out of gamingâ and âXbox gamers donât buy Japanese gamesâ must be the two most dumb takes being said over and over and over again since I dunno the OG Xbox days?
Also in the same video I found pretty funny the bit where they said that Steam Deck provides a very decent playing experience with Rift Apart, a supposedly next-gen showcase that and I quote âfeels next genâ. So if that is the case and Deck can provide a more than decent next-gen experience why are there still theories out there (and sometimes in DF as well) that Series S might hold things back this generation? like how does that even make sense if you can play a game that feels next gen just fine on a freakinâ Steam Deck.
If Microsoft still has stock problems with Series X, then they could also make a themed console with Series S. That too would do its good numbers, especially in view of the holidays.
I also want to add console sales are important to third party developers. The more consoles you sell, the more developers are incentivized to support with their games. We always see Phil Spencer or Sarah Bond around trying to establish more and more partnerships to make sure that developers donât leave Xbox, such as Square Enix or Atlus, while the sales of PS5 and Nintendo Switch are enough to convince developers. Microsoftâs strategy of focusing on consoles, PC, cloud, and Game Pass may work for first parties, but not for big publishers.
Most developers have eventually admitted that theyâre more concerned about the effort for optimization than the âholding backâ narrative, which is fair, I fully feel that for them itâs more effort but that could honestly open room for innovation in optimization. The weird thing is apparently, they feel held back by the whole generation even PS5 and XSX because they wanted so much more memory than they have been given. It kind makes sense because from PS360 to PS4/XB1 we went 16x memory increase, and from PS4/XB1 to PS5/XSX we went only 2x memory increase.
I always believe that limitations open the door for innovations, always, I mean look what Nintendo do with the frickin Switch hardware lol, and look how GTA V was a PS360 game and it still feels an impressive game to this day.
I agree overall with this but I believe big publishers support comes naturally to Xbox, like Ubisoft EA 2K etc, more the Eastern publishers that require that establishing of a partnership, and it always did even in the 360.
Xbox has shifted away from console only for years now, as they release everything on PC Day 1 as well. But consoles are still as big a part of their strategy as is PC and soon to be mobile as well.
Ehh⌠the issue i see there is that Microsoft does much more with custom controllers and accessories than the others including the design labs. And since Iâm sure the profit margins are much better for the accessories i think they are fine not really worrying about bundles. Big time since consoles tend to come with some amount of gamepass which would include any first party games. So bundles for first party donât mean much since they rather have you in their subscription service.
So i think they are doing fine with the accessories as starfield even has a head set to go with the controller.
Problem is that cloud is part of the strategy to attach Xbox to Azure, which makes Xbox a more valuable product to Microsoft as a whole(itâs also not just the consoles on the data center either, as the tools for making games are also part of Azure), right now we got confirmation from Phil himself during the showcase that they would have more consoles ready for sale.
Itâs funny how Tears of the Kingdom is doing so many more interesting and advanced game design applications than next-gen AAA games, and itâs on mobile-level hardware lol
I think main reason why this wonât happen because it will kill their gamepass strategy. I feel majority of gamepass sub is through console, and would lose a ton of subs if they ditch consoles. I donât think you can depend on PC and mobile to drive gamepass subs. Plus, thereâs no way Sony or Nintendo allows gamepass on their platform because it will cannibalize sales on their respective storefronts.
