343 rebranded to Halo Studios, switching to Unreal Engine 5 for future Halo games of which "multiple" are in development

I hope at least the story somehow either continues or wraps up the story from infinite.

The SP campaign for infinite is amazing, bummer it got caught up in stupid narratives at the beginning of the gen cause I had a blast with it nd really look forward to more.

I think going to UE5 is the correct move as it will allow other studios to take a crack at Halo and should smooth out production.

That entire business model of loss leading hardware and moving hardware at a loss is falling apart and only Sony try desperately to cling to. Even they will find that changes are needed and they will have to move on from that,

Sony fans are in for a rough time if they think Sony can sit alone in their Hardware Sales Number counting empire in the future without change

We don’t know what games will be on Switch 2 other than COD, it’s a possibility sure but we’re not there just yet, I do dream of a future where all games are required to run on all the platforms/consoles that can run them, I want regulators to end walled gardens once and for all in this industry.

I would buy a good amount of popcorn and look at Twitter and Otherera reactions to that :joy:

We’ll just have to wait and see, but apparently Tom Warren is talking about at least a PS port for Halo, according to r/gamingleaksandrumors.

Okay I’ll try to better articulate my statements in the future :stuck_out_tongue: I don’t want to seem like the party pooper it’s just that if we were gonna see new hardware so soon someone woulda spilled beans on a early dev kit by now.

Either way there’s good stuff coming and that’s all that really matters.

I hope I don’t sound flippant in tone when I say this but:

Plans definitely change after you’ve acquired one of the biggest names in game development for $69 billion.

I can’t say whether they’ll release in 26 or 28, but their plans at that time considered buying other publishers (I forget but did they even consider buying ABK in those documents?), considered a streaming box, and had a much different looking release schedule. I bet at that time they didn’t know that Pierre Hintze was taking over 343 and it would be renamed. I’m sure at that time that the Switch made them consider a happen handheld, but the popularity of SteamDeck and Windows portables wasn’t made apparent at that time.

I’m sure at that time, GTA6 wasn’t set for late 2025.

It was a time where AI wasn’t making enough noise to get billions in investment. It may have been written during a time where NFTs were all the craze.

Consoles are usually planned years in advance, yes, but because these platforms are forever forward compatible there is less reason for the hardware dev cycle to be that long. I see it being far more comparable to flagship phone releases. But this is just wishful thinking on my part, my point is that the world has changed in such a short span that is well worth reconsidering plans.

Many have said that PlayStation should have reconsidered the PS5 Pro. I think it will still do well, but the lukewarm response for something usually so wildly clamored is noteworthy and tells us a bit about the headspace of the gaming audience.

indeed, we will but this is one of the things about UE5, it’s pretty much a multiiplat engine. However, like they said it’s early days and for this to happen many things need to come before which are lacking.

Seems reasonable. Here’s a paragraph from that article:

At several points over the past decade, management at 343 debated switching to Epic Games Inc.’s popular Unreal Engine. But it wasn’t until late last year, when previous studio head Bonnie Ross and engine lead David Berger departed and Pierre Hintze took over, that the firm finally decided to pivot to Unreal. This switch will start with a new game code-named Tatanka , according to people familiar with the plans. That project, which 343 is developing alongside the Austin, Texas-based game studio Certain Affinity, started off as a battle royale but may evolve in different directions, the people said. Future games in the series will also explore using the Unreal Engine, which may make development easier, although internal skeptics are worried that the switch may have a negative impact on the way Halo games feel to play. A Microsoft spokesman declined to comment on issues with the engine or on the company’s plans to pivot to Unreal.

Wonder if some of the redeployed devs from Arkane Austin are helping, given they could work with Certain Affinity without moving and possibly act as intermediaries too…

Yep all internal until yesterday was when they first announced it

They should consider this a fresh start and just completely reboot in terms of the campaign. Looking forward to what they develop.

Making Halo multiplatform is the logical conclusion when seeing the transition to UE5.

As we know, Xbox games that didn’t transition to UE5 couldn’t be made multplats, not for PC or for other consoles.

And as we know, in general, games that aren’t made in UE5 are impossible or hard to make multiplats. And usually games are made by UE for this clear reason.

It’s a well know fact that every gamer is familiar with and comes up every time such a transition is made, I don’t know why some people seems surprised, as if this is the first time such correlation is made.

(Do I need a /s?)

Still sad Slispace didn’t work out, so much time and work seemed to have gone on that engine just for one game, I understand why they’re moving to Unreal and many other Xbox studios have but something about studios having their own engines seems like it can work well, it works perfectly for Sony and Nintendo studios and it is definitely working great for Turn 10 and Playground, so much so that Playground even chose the Forza engine for Fable, I remember back in 2020 when everybody thought it was going to be on UE5.

I still have my concerns over this move, I’m sure the team made the best possible decision they could make at the moment but UE5 hasn’t been nearly as great was it was hyped up to be early this generation, also have concerns over Witcher remake which will be using UE5 too, and why I think Halo CE is getting a remake on UE5, what better way and probably low risk to master the engine than with a remake? we’ll see.

More options/competition is always prefereable.

But the “right engine” depends on a lot of factors, and if we don’t know about the future plans of the development, the different projects, the financial situation, the available talent, the needed features (now and in the future) and how feasible/efficient/quick different engines in delivering it = we won’t have enough to answer the question.

And what makes sense now for a game might not make sense in another time or in a different situation or with a different team.

So I prefer to think that the development teams should know more than anyone else what they need, and are trying to find the most suitable tools for them.

Will Until Dawn be the 1st SONY game on Xbox

Same here, Infinite played amazing and if they can replicate that feel I don’t care about the engine. I have faith in the studio that they will deliver this, I am really excited for all the future Halo games so hopefully it won’t take too long to see them in action!

I think what matters the most is that the team is growing again, and multiple projects are in development.

The announcement as a whole just screams reboot in a good way. From new studio name to new tools, I believe it is justified. Plus, the head of studio is the guy who legit saved MCC and perhaps even Infinite Multiplayer. If he can turn everything around, it will be him. Of course, he’s going to need his team and if everyone can be in the same page, Halo will get its renaissance.

Infinite MP can’t be credited to his leadership as everything they did was already in the works under Staten.

Hintze’s is bullish about Halo, so whatever way they go they will stick to it.

But they did shift focus on what to release first and foremost. Many were getting done, but which one should be prioritized is on the leader’s call.
