I’m hoping for the best with BioWare. I’d love for them to come back with a new Mass Effect game that matches the greatness of the Shepard trilogy. But if they don’t, I’ll always have the old games to replay, and I think at this point I’ve kind of made peace with whatever outcome.
Asha correcting a decades old mistake and buy Bioware; Mass Effect 4 exclusive? Yes please.
I could be wrong but I could actually Sony being intrested if they are scared of Microsoft making their games exclusive again, owning Bioware could be a good counter weight to Microosfts WRPG dominance
I’d be very surprised and very alarmed with the current downsizing. I’m not even sure Mass Effect and Dragon Age would fit under their big franchise push considering where both titles are out now.
I’m honestly no sure who even wants to buy anything anymore. Anyone has the resources, but everyone seems to be in a period of downsizing and dumping studios. Bioware would be a heavy undertaking for anyone that buys it and would probably require a bit of work considering their past releases and how fans are kinda split on them. At this point I expect Amazon to buy them for their gaming push and maybe to make an original show/movie off of Dragon Age or Mass Effect, and then close the studio in five years when they stop caring.
Please someone good get them and save Mass Effect.
I mean, if someone bought Bioware I think it would be more for the associated IP and cross media potential and less for the studio
The only corp that could buy Bio (if its true) is Take Two or Nintendo IMO. The likes of of SONY & Microsoft can forget it, their names are mud & the blood bath in XBOX is still going on …
Nintendo doesn’t even buy their 2nd party studios. Why would they buy Bioware. Take two…maybe
Dragon Age is definitely dead until an inevitable reboot a decade down the line.
I think Mass Effect 4 is popular enough to get made, considering the performance of the remaster and the fact the fandom is still very active for a franchise that hasn’t had new content in a decade.
I don’t think Nintendo would, but they have enough money & unlike XBOX or SONY don’t kill off Studios or layoff tons of their staff
If you worked for BioWare, the last thing you would want is for Microsoft to buy you
I mean, lay offs are going to happen no matter who buys them unless it is someone like nintendo who…why would they buy them?
Honestly their is a near 0% chance of buy them but if I got to choice I would want SEGA to buy them. The only bioware game I liked was sonic chronicals, I would like a remake of that and a sequel, but if I had to guess Sony, Microsoft, Take Two and maybe an outside player like an Amazon probably are the front runners
You mean you didn’t like Mass Effect?! ![]()
I’ve heard people exist who didn’t but I’ve never spoken to one before… ![]()
I have tried to get into Mass Effect several times and it just doesn’t keep my intrest. Same with most WRPGs…and Yakuza
Nintendo won’t, but their name isn’t mud. What’s the point in XBOX buying Bioware so it can close another studio & lay off yet more staff? Maybe TakeTwo would be a good fit for them, should EA be silly enough to sell
I’ve played plenty of fab BioWare games from Mass Effect to Dragon Age: The Veilguard. They were also mighty on the old OG XBOX with the likes of Jade Empire & Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic.
I mean, these acquisitions don’t typically happen based on who would be the best hypothetical owner. They happen based on who is willing to pay the most, and that’s almost certainly going to be the bottom line if BioWare or other EA assets actually go up for sale.
That said, I don’t think Microsoft would buy BioWare just to kill it. Staff reductions would probably happen because BioWare has already been heavily downsized and EA itself has moved it toward being a much smaller, focused studio working on Mass Effect. The bigger attraction to me isn’t really the talent anymore, especially given BioWare’s recent output, it’s the IP. Mass Effect and Dragon Age still have a lot of untapped potential from both a gaming and multimedia perspective.
I’d also push back on the idea that selling BioWare would be “silly” for EA. If anything, BioWare has always been relatively non-core compared to EA’s sports and live-service businesses. If EA decides it can get a decent price for the studio and its associated IP while removing the costs and risk of maintaining it, selling it could make perfect business sense.
There were also rumours around the 2020 Game Awards that BioWare’s Mass Effect announcement was partly intended to demonstrate the franchise’s value and secure its future to EA, although these are unconfirmed.
Honestly, given everything that’s happened with BioWare since then, I’d argue the studio has been pretty lucky to survive this long. If EA is now genuinely considering what assets it wants to keep after the acquisition, I don’t think BioWare being on that hypothetical chopping block would be surprising at all.
And from EA’s perspective, if someone is willing to pay a decent amount for a studio with Mass Effect and Dragon Age attached to it, that could actually be a pretty attractive way of turning a non-core, relatively risky asset into cash while letting someone else take on the development risk.
Bioware are a fantastic developer. I’m pretty sure if XBOX bought them, most of the staff would walk becasue we’ve all seem how well XBOX looks after their new studios.
Its a little ironic mind becase Mass Effect was once a XBOX IP before they allowed it to go to EA wasn’t it? XBox spend so much effort & money with working Bioware to make a XBOX exclusive. Only for like a lot of XBOX 360 games to end up on the PS3, when Xbox gave up on exclusives & feel in love with that God awful Kinect & put millions
Well, I’ve never personally been a BioWare fan. The only BioWare game I actually like is fucking Sonic Chronicles ![]()
But from what I’ve seen from BioWare fans over the last decade, there’s been a pretty constant blame thrown at EA for Bioware’s decline. It’s EA killed BioWare, EA screwed up Anthem, EA screwed up Veilguard, EA ruined Mass Effect 3’s ending, etc. Obviously there are still people who love the studio and its older games, but I don’t think calling the current BioWare a fantastic developer is anywhere near as universally accepted as calling its legacy fantastic.
And are we really going to pretend EA has a better reputation than Xbox when it comes to killing studios?
I actually think EA is one of the most overhated companies in gaming, but their reputation for buying studios and eventually shutting them down is pretty damn strong. So I don’t think “Microsoft might kill BioWare” is automatically a compelling argument for why EA is the better owner.
Also, Microsoft never actually owned Mass Effect. They helped fund the original game and provided development support, but that isn’t the same thing as owning the IP. BioWare owned Mass Effect, and when EA acquired BioWare, EA ultimately acquired the IP as part of that deal.
It’s basically the same distinction as saying Sony owns Stellar Blade or Nintendo owns Bayonetta just because they funded or helped publish those games. Funding a game or securing an exclusivity agreement doesn’t automatically mean you own the IP.
Microsoft clearly saw enough value in BioWare to invest heavily in the original Mass Effect and make it a major Xbox 360 exclusive, but that doesn’t mean Mass Effect was ever an Xbox IP. EA eventually took the franchise multiplatform because it obviously made more financial sense for them to maximise the audience.
It’s definitely not that simple. EA probably forced BioWare to push Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3 out the door before those games were ready. But it’s pretty well documented that the problems with Anthem, Andromeda, and Veilguard were due to BioWare’s internal decisions, not interference from EA. In fact the problem was arguably the opposite - EA gave BioWare enough rope to hang itself rather than step in and resolve the issues in those games’ development.
