Budget, Performance & Delays: Why PlayStation Dropped Kojima

I get budgetary concerns, sales, and deadlines, but a PC launch being a cited reason is kinda harsh from Sony in 2026. I guess they’re really going hard on being back to PS only exclusivity, but I’m not sure how much they expect their partners to follow through with that.

One of the points I saw was that it wouldn’t be permanently exclusive to Playstation so weren’t willing to continue investment. We know many of their internal studios games will be even more expensive to run and fund than this, but they control those fully. So DS2 could be on its way to Xbox as well if Kojima insists on multiplatform, and OD and Physint probably at best Xbox timed exclusive.

I bet that also why Konami wanted rid of the man.

I’m sorry, but this isn’t a good move on XBox part other than getting one over SONY

Delaying PC release does more damage than delaying another console release.

So Xbox actually does one of those console war moves some of y’all have asking for that are not about profit, and it’s not a good move now?

Not like they purchased them. If you (the one you replied) want, call this as a great test of Asha. If it benefits, then good. If not, then it is what it is.

I thought Gears E-day was the test? Is everyone just going to keep saying everything Asha does is a test?

I’m not a fan of Kojima, sorry never mind how much this is costing XBOX I much rather XBOX looked to make the likes of the new JSR, Crazy Taxi games exclusive myself like in the old OG XBOX days

It be far cheap too

Mad. Taking a Kojima stealth game from PS exclusive to Xbox while having a horror game in the making already would literally be one of those dream scenarios that Xbox console warriors would imagine years ago. I genuinely believe some of you are addicted to looking at the negative side of every course of action Xbox takes.

This piece is surprisingly one-sided. It reads like corporate statements from PlayStation, with no explanation or Kojima Productions’ side.

Probably because Kojima came out and said it that practically painted PS bad. Much like CM Punk with AEW. The engagement is extremely high for a developer statement that isn’t Rockstar.

I made the mistake of buying Death Stranding & it’s an utter bore fest, very much like MGS IV. I’d rather XBOX looked to work with corps who looked to make the XBOX the best console around inthe OG, 360 days & would rather XBOX looked to do exclusive deals with SEGA, FromSoftware & Mistwalker.

I’d say it’s a needed optics win after the worst downsizing blow to Xbox we’ve ever seen. It’s not just about “stealing” from PS, but showing that Xbox still has a willingness to invest in gaming. I also don’t think Xbox is capable of taking on an actual money sink right now. The project is already partially funded and along the way. Xbox can come in and save the day without it being a big burden (or burden at all, we don’t know the financials of the deal or how the future project timeline will play out). And then there’s obviously Xbox not having a problem at all with a PC & Console release, so at least one of the concerns Sony had are just nonexistent for Xbox. It’s a good looking big bombastic move that probably wasn’t actually that expensive and may or may not pay off. The brand needed it though.

They still have 1600 people to fire and even more by the time they report their earnings next year.

Edit: There’s no getting away from layoff optics, because they’re always just a round corner.

Speaking of exclusive, why would it be mutually exclusive? Xbox already has a very relationship with SEGA and have marketing for major Sega games coming up and Game Pass deals. Yeah, no exclusivity deals but the amount of money it’d cost to make something like Persona 6 an Xbox exclusive would lead to a bigger loss than this project ever could. I also don’t think you realize how big Kojima is in the east and within communities that love Japanese games. His name carries real weight across media in Japan and in certain ways more weight than Sega and From software. Xbox isn’t funding this project from scratch and it also includes media in film and television. That’s not something that comes along often. Sega isn’t approaching Xbox with a deal to have their brand attached to and make money off of Stranger than Heaven, a Stranger than Heaven TV show, and a Stranger than Heaven movie. It is actually the exact type of synergy and multimedia game franchise approach that Microsoft made clear they want Xbox to go in. Ways to monetize their video games as both video games and beyond being just video games.

Yes and that’s horrible, but that doesn’t really change what I said. Things objectively suck right now at Xbox, across the industry, and around the world. They also aren’t going to get better anytime soon. This is still a needed optics win. I didn’t say it negated the negatives happening at Xbox. Hell, not even buying Kojima Productions could do that. You can’t really gut one studio, buy another, and expect it to be some equal transaction that gives absolution.

The optics of 1600 at once vs. 1600 over a year are very different. The latter will not enter the minds of the casuals in the same way.

The issue is that as people get layoff gaming news sites will all be reaching out to get comments. As negative news will always generate a lot more revenue than just another random story.

The majority of the audience do not read news gaming sites and if they do it’s for guides on minecraft or the latest hotness in roblox. We’re a bubble.
