Slowly but surely they do devaluate the hardware. I think the few hundred millions of dollars made from the sales of games on PS doesn’t make up for potential lost sales in their ecosystem from subscriptions and hardware/accessories sales long term.

PC is a different beast altogether, but there is definite cannibalism going on within console ecosystems, especially between the 2 high powered competitors.

That’s if they see those loses long term. We’d need several years of multiplatform games across generations to really establish if losses are possible. Again we’re already seeing that despite launching soon on PS5, Forza Horizon 6 is performing EVEN BETTER than Forza Horizon 5 did on launch. We’d also need that to happen during fairly normal conditions when we can’t more reasonably point to reasons like increased hardware costs, rising subscription costs, decreased production, etc.

Also, I’ll keep just saying we *do* have decades of exclusives to tell us that they haven’t stopped the bleed in the console market. Consoles haven’t much grown in sales per generation and they’ve all dwindled from their peak. We also have said close competitor console as an example. They’ve also put their most popular and most successful live service multiplayer game this generation on the rival console (Helldivers 2). We’ve also seen that their other games have struggled find an audience and they just haven’t been able to put out that many games (single player or multiplayer) period. We’ve seen them need to close studios and shutdown games. We’ve gotten leaks of the very bad margins of their most popular games due to rising dev costs to maintain quality.

The idea of multiplatform devaluing hardware is largely based on “vibes”. It’s people on social media complaining about not doing what consoles have always done will kill consoles. But the problem is that consoles have been doing the same thing for decades and are already dying (not growing). They’re also taking studios with them or having to charge customers more and more (usually doing both). Something does need to change. Whether multiplatform releases will be the nail in the coffin or not is unknown. We need the leap to actually be taken and stuck to for several years to be able to say.

Even if exclusives did make people swap consoles (which I’m unsure of given lock in seems to be very much the trend - the PS5 has had lacklustre first party compared to the PS4 but is doing similar numbers, as are the Series consoles v the One) - the shareholders only care about numbers going up.

So sales this financial year on rival consoles bringing in a big cash boost is tangible to them, whereas a reduction in ecosystem sales over time is a problem for future shareholders and future results - capitalism doesn’t think that far ahead, it’s part of the reason we’re all a bit fucked now lol

Yeah i played a bit of it yesterday and really liking it. This is something I’d buy for sure.

If capitalism did think that far ahead consoles on the whole would be a much more future proofed platform and we’d all have less headaches. Microsoft definitely laments not leveraging Xbox & Windows gaming sooner and letting Steam dominate their own operating system so much.

Good luck to him and his team, honestly, but I feel like we’ve seen this “Veteran dev starts new AAA studio” story 20 times and the outcome is always a few years of radio silence and then the company shuts down. :frowning:

Going live

Mat posting his monthly Circana video games report.

Starfield is number 8, up from 218 in March.

Top 10 for the year - didn’t notice it’s 10 now.

RE9 still on top.

That’s an insane leap. The internet assured me that game stayed dead, it was pointless porting it to PS, and the update wasn’t the Starfield 2.0 it needed to revive.

It’s pretty good, I don’t think it will chart in the top 10 for May though. If it does than Starfield has legs and room to grow, even with a 3 year old port.

Hardware in decline across Switch 1, Xbox and PS. Switch 2 offset it.

Edit: It looks like Circana isn’t doing individual platform rankings this month.

Got this hyperkin controller as an early Father’s Day present. So cool playing EA Sports PGA Tour with it… it’s pure nostalgia that transported me back 20 plus years. Slamming on the white button to power up a golf shot. Must be 2001:victory_hand:

Wait why isn’t this posted yet?

Tomorrow is the Take Two earnings call and if there’s yet another delay… we’ll hear it there. The news about preorders turns out wasn’t true.

And well, 4chan is saying it got delayed to February 2027 and May for PC release. Apparently the news of the last two delays got leaked there too…so…

Really hope it’s bullshit and that the CEO tomorrow says things are on track with marketing starting next month. I am so very done with the delays or this one.

Don’t know, maybe their assuming from previous showcases, or reporting on a leak without saying so.

Read the article, just says there is no official time but gives a guess.
