Diablo 2 Resurrected: It Seems You Can't Use "Legacy Mode" Anymore If You Want To Play The "Reign of the Warlock" Expansion

I’ve just learned that there is a “Legacy Mode” in Diablo 2 Resurrected and that it is locked if you decide to change your game to use the new “Reign of the Warlock” expansion. When you have the DLC installed, a pop-up propose you to change all of your characters to use the new content and update, but it doesn’t tell you that it locks you out of the “Legacy Mode” completely. I searched online and it seems you can’t change it back, at least, not on console, not without losing all of your characters and saves files (by deleting everything, which I guess could fix it as a last resort).

As users discussed on the Diablo 2 Resurrected Forums a few days ago, it seems like the Warlock, being an all new character to the game, doesn’t have the legacy textures and graphics effects made for him to be playable in that mode, so devs decided to lock that out to avoid incompatibility problems.

You use to be able to switch between “Legacy Mode” (Original Diablo 2 graphics) and the new Resurrected graphics, by pushing LT+View button on Xbox, which I didn’t know before and wanted to try, but now I can’t.

I was actually wondering about this after I played, like did Blizzard actually go back and insert old textures for the Warlock in the OG D2, but I guess you just answered my question.

I never had any actual intention of spending much time with the old school graphics anyway, although it is nice from time to time.

We just did a quick playthrough on Normal with the Warlock to experiment a bit and are waiting for the ladder reset on Friday to jump back in!

I was like “Oh, there’s a Legacy Mode, really ?? How did I miss that ?” and then “Oh… I guess I made a mistake”… I should have waited to buy the new expansion, but only for the Quality of Life update, I thought it was worth it.

It’s understandable that devs cut it, it would have been so much work to do all the sprites and everything for the new character, but it’s disappointing for people who only played the game in that mode.

Still something that should definitely be communicated to gamers before they purchase. Feels like an odd oversight.
