Last September, Square Enix announced Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined for Xbox Series X|S — and while the full release launches in just a few weeks’ time, the team has now revealed a free demo for the title coming this week.
Yep, the Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Demo lands tomorrow, January 7th, and any progress made in the demo version will carry over to the full release next month. Anyone who jumps into the demo will also earn a free costume for Maribel within the full retail release of the game.
I’m watching the opening vid on Pure Xbox and I have to wonder if they updated the style a bit, because I remember this games characters looking pretty bad when they first debuted. Right now they don’t look as off as they did before, even the blonde guy that was the worst looking, seemed to have gotten his face toned down a bit.
But it still has some of those sharper angles that don’t really work to well.
They should have used cell-shading, it would have looked much better. I have uncanny-valley vibes from this.
Maybe, I still think the DQ11 style of shading would have worked better on this as it’s not to realistic, as it is this kind of looks like they went with a clay like look, because the characters look off.
For sure. DQ 11 didn’t look bad.
Maybe they should have gone the Visions of Mana route. The game looks great. I should play it sometime.
No, Toriyamas style has been part of DQ since it’s conception, replacing it would draw way more criticism than the style not looking up to a good standard.
The shading and lighting from Visions of Mana though would have been a better way to make their game pop. Without losing the style.
Sorry, I meant with the mix of 3D anime look and cell-shading.
It’s great that the game has a demo. I am on the fence about this one and a demo will help me to see if I want to purchase it or not. Good on Square Enix for providing demos for it’s recent games on Xbox.
I really like that the demos also carry over to the main game, which is a great change from the FF15, which I believe didn’t carry over the data to the main game. Or even be actually in the game.
Demo trailer from Squares YouTube Channel, demo is also available to download and play.
The in game look, looks better than the cinematic look of the game. The lighting in the menu isn’t very good though, but it does make it seem like the look they’re going for is a sort of claymation style.
edit: lowering the brightness helps, I like it a bit dark so I went from 50 to 40 first, before going down to 32. But I think having less brightness helps with the games over all look, even in the menu.
edit 2: When looking through youtube for the demo video, I noticed that someone had a 5 hour long video on it, so the demo is almost as meaty as Metaphors demo.
