I call this the acceptance phase. Where I think ultimately most will end up. But of course the most toxic and vocal fanboys will continue to drive their crappy opinions to the great youtubes.
No, this is the click bait Tassi has spoken to a few people more informed than he is and suddenly realised his first article was going to look very foolish.
People need to think logically…IF Xbox planned to publish many of these games on PS5 Phil would on the news pieces he did have just said so…’hey guys we are fair we want everyone to play these games’…it’s an easy message.
BUT if he comes out and says these are outright exclusive it creates a bad press and whatever…so the line ‘case by case basis’ is born. And they will put some on the switch I’m sure…it’s great PR because it stops loads of headlines about Xbox stealing PS5 games…
That’s a good read and true.
Its just logical. And the more information comes out, the more set in stone it will become for others. Its too much an advantage against the competition.
Finally somebody gets it. Now if only others would move on from denial. I would hope that they do so when MS announces it’s first exclusive.
One of the biggest issues I’ve had and seen since this deal is the notion that MS need to continue to be the “good guy” in this for some odd reason…the impetuous is always on them for this when the other big 2 don’t play by the same rules.
Alanah and Gary both pretty much said this on the latest XCast…not only that but hand waved Sony’s behavior as that “being just who they are”. Excuse me? What nonsense.
MS doesn’t owe anything to Sony or anyone else outside of their customer base…just as Sony or Nintendo doesn’t.
Would it be great if everything was on every platform? Sure but that’s completely unrealistic and has never been the case…so why do the rules need to change now?
Exclusives are a part of the business and people need to grow up and accept it.
I’ve been thinking about it and while I disagree with the argument I think I see where it is coming from. She is coming from an altruistic position of we know Sony is so entrenched that they would never consider and Nintendo wouldn’t either. I think she is coming from a position of MS is the only opportunity we have had at a platform holders being platform agnostic. MS is the only one that could maybe do it. It’s more that this is as close as we have ever gotten, and likely will ever get, exclusives going away. It’s more possibility than actual reality. Maybe.
All that said, the more moneyhatting of 3rd party exclusives Sony does the less reason MS has to put any of their properties on PS5.
The only way that Microsoft would put Bethesda games, and by extension XGS games, on PS would be for Sony to allow Game Pass on Playstation, which will never happen. Therefore, Microsoft will keep the games exclusives to the platforms where Game Pass is present, thus not PS.
While you won’t find Disney-owned movies included in other subscriptions, you can still buy Disney-owned movies on other platforms.
I wonder if that’s a possibility for gaming long term. For example, Bethesda games have Game Pass as its exclusive subscription / streaming home, but maybe you could purchase the games digitally or retail for another platform.
I know it’s more complicated to support multiple platforms in gaming than it is for movie syndication/distribution. Just a thought.
I suspect that is what MS would want but it has to be reciprocal. If others want XGS games they need to offer up their exclusives on the Xbox platform.
Yup, still love Xcast but only watched half of the episode. Couldn’t keep going with the points they were putting down. Good for them but I’ll pick it up next week.
I think the discussion has been lost a bit in this thread when most of the posts seem to be going after Alanah rather than discussing the actual topic of exclusives. I’ve seen the video and don’t think she’s a hypocrite, a fan girl, or biased for her opinion. MS did do this to themselves in a way by allowing some of their exclusives on other systems. Due to their history, it’s no surprise that many are wondering if future Bethesda games will be exclusive. Their follow up comments also did not help here.
If we see the quality of their games go up and are exclusive, and people like Alanah are still asking for PS5 ports, then it’s fair to call them out. However she presented her view well with good intentions. So I cannot stress it enough that we are not to attack people in the media for having a different opinion than you.
If this video is causing you to feel this way, you probably should step away from gaming for a bit, get some fresh air, and maybe start another hobby until you can get a level head. There is nothing about her opinion that should piss anyone off, regardless of their console of choice.
You don’t think her position of it’s okay for Sony to have exclusives in any way undermines the point she was trying to make that exclusives are bad?
I think media opinions have been pro PS for sure. But i respect different point of views. However MS needs more exclusive to make Gamepass a killer App.
This isn’t directed at anyone here, including the OP, but seriously? The “ethics” of MS buying Bethesda? I find any outrage over this little more than sour grapes or a portion of the population used to being able to have the “best games” facing new choices.
MS have said time and again that they don’t want to sell us a console. They want us buying in to Gamepass. If we buy a console? Cool. Like, how much easier can they make it? It’s on phones. PC’s. A $299 console that can be had for 29.99(?) a month with Gamepass with a credit check.
Life is about choices. I chose to buy a PS4 and an Xbox because I wanted to play PS4 games I couldn’t play anywhere else. I get not everyone can afford two consoles. Some can’t even afford one. And I think the point that even I missed is that a big part of MS buying Bethesda was for their streaming tech. MS is competing on two fronts: against PS5 for now, and against future new streaming competitors later. Would I be annoyed if Amazon bought Bethesda and I had to use a new, separate service to play their games? Sure. Just like having to choose from all of these competing streaming services for TV and movies. But, I still chose, and life moves on.
Being thoughtful and fair doesn’t sell. Picking a side and catering to it does. Her videos got us all in to a conversation. I’m sticking with MS this round because they want my business and are making all the right moves (for me). At the end of the day this is all about entertainment. I think a lot of people on the internet could use more perspective.
One last thing I thought of. Isn’t making game streaming more accessible better for everyone? If the “poor gamers” scapegoat is to be believed, that is. If someone with no budget for entertainment could spend $60 on a controller and $15 a month on Gamepass isn’t that great for our hobby? It seems like the people most concerned about the buyout being an ominous start to a monopoly are pro-Sony.
In an ideal world, all games would be available on all platforms (as long as it can run it), and exclusives would not be required to sell your product, the OS, the services, the controller, etc. should make enough of a difference. In an ideal world, you’d only need to buy a license for a game once, which then you could carry over to whatever system you want to play on, even future consoles. In an ideal world, all games would be cross-play and cross-progression too, so no matter where you play, you get to carry on with your progress and play with your buddies.
But this is not an ideal world. In fact, in an ideal world, Bethesda would not need to sell out, their single player games would have word of mouth and legs for being, more often than not, miles beyond some of the biggest sellers each year. It’s not an ideal world where basically all single player games, in fact, need to shoehorn some sort of multiplayer, pad out the content with tons of filler or throw gamechanging DLCs to make further bank. Bethesda was at risk of letting a lot of people go, we’re at least lucky it was picked up by somebody who has interests in gaming and isn’t just buying assets.
Is it “ethical” to “force” Bethesda to drop all other consoles and focus on Xbox/PC? First of all, I don’t think this will happen completely. Microsoft has allowed games like Minecraft Dungeons and the Ori games to arrive elsewhere, Hellblade and Cuphead to make rounds, and of course releasing games on Steam also does not bring them as much money as a Windows Store purchase. But the thing is, they own Bethesda now, and gaming is, for better or worse, about exclusives. Microsoft spent a crazy amount of money on this, and I doubt they’ll just keep in giving away “free” games to owners of other platforms like that. A new Elder Scrolls, Starfield, Fallout? PC, xCloud, or even better, Xbox. This is what everyone is doing, too.
Yeah my intention was to discuss the points not the person. Alanah is a super balanced and honest ‘journalist’ or whatever she wants to be and her argument was well formulated. I do think it had some inconsistencies and parts where it felt like it was being twisted in knots to justify something. I think there is an ingrained perception across much of the gaming population and media that Sony are some sort of magic bullet and games are better off under them than elsewhere - so you have this sort of ‘Sony do it, ah well, but its Sony so whatever’. Yet others don’t get that sort of treatment and I’m not sure that is a) fair or b) a balanced reflection of history. Sony’s amazing first party offerings are pretty recent and also in one main genre. That’s fine for them it sells stuff but its also why they try and strike a lot of timed exclusives to bolster their library. I think there has been a lack of criticism over Sony’s first party approach and subsequent need to be aggressive in the genres they lack in 3rd party deals - that are purely paying money to keep the game from xbox.
