Is grouping all next gen comparisons into a single thread really the way to go?
I already barely visit the studios OT because it’s too big and too fast to keep up and this one is also moving way too fast already.

I feel like this too.
This has been the case since they revealed the Series X at the TGA’s. So their marketing has been consistent from the start, I wish they would change it to “Most Powerful Console”.
I mentioned this in the AC thread I believe, but it doesn’t help that Microsoft advertised their box as being the most powerful while failing to show a game that looks like it takes advantage of said performance. How have we not seen gameplay of anything new from Xbox’s 15 studios?
It’s actually a bit embarrassing that the only showcase for the Series X has been Halo Infinite which was delayed due to backlash over its visual quality. Even the One had Ryse that demonstrated “next generation” polygon pushing power, Dead Rising 3 in the improvements of the CPU and Forza Motorsport 5 as a technical milestone.
There doesn’t seem to be a reason to worry about the Series X just yet. It has the advantage in several regards on paper. These are just launch titles, cross-gen at that and from Ubisoft no less as well as Codemasters to which an enchanted Forza Horizon 4 looks better than their Dirt 5. If this is still a problem in 6-12 months, of which it’s still a major failure that fans have to even wait that long, then the panic is justified.
Clearly the development tools need to mature, engines require optimization and there’s the factor of developers having to create a game for two hardware variants from home. We know Xbox waited for RDNA 2 and got their dev kits out later than PlayStation.
Still, this isn’t a good look. Xbox leadership promised the most powerful console and we’re not seeing it. It genuinely baffles me that under Phil’s tenure, he had the opportunity to wipe the slate clean with a new generation and failed to deliver on power and first-party. There’s just no excuse.
What I’d like to see is preferably Jason Ronald come out and explain why this is an issue and how Xbox plans to address it if we continue to see discrepancies in the coming months. Assuming Xbox will make an appearance at the VGA, they better bring gameplay to the table or it’ll be a huge blunder considering the context.
I’ve largely just been keeping my head down and gaming. I’m loving the new Xbox. It’s clearly beefy and in all likelihood, we’ll look back at launch and say that everyone was acting like drama queens. However, I’m not going to hand wave the problems away and try to cope with marketing and promises the end product isn’t living up to. That’s limp pp energy. Be critical and demand better.
In the long term, MS’s strategy should pay plenty of dividends. In the short term, I’m scared to see how Cyberpunk compares.
I didn’t even think about Cyberpunk. Damn. XB had marketing deals for Dirt, and Valhalla and both are not doing as expected, so I’d imagine the same could be for Cyberpunk.
like i said bad management decision led to this launch situation and i was banned for saying this lol.
Xbox needs right now is next gen showcase, reveal uncut gameplay of next gen game. show what the hardware can do
Can someone tell me what’s optimized about these games? To me they are using the XOX | PS4 pro versions with unlocked frame rate and they call it optimized.
Microsoft, Ubisoft and Codemasters are hurting the Series X by saying “optimized”.
This is what optimized means
Great post.
Anyway if the XSX doesn’t win the cyberpunk comparison, when the next gen patches arrive, then it will be in big trouble. This might be the face off that defines the entire narrative of which console is stronger.
The good thing about Cyberpunk is neither will take full advantage at launch so it may be One X vs PS4 Pro with natural hardware based enhancements and by the time the next gen versions come, they’ll have had enough time with the SDK.
the console should win because it will play XOX BC Version
AFTER the next gen patches are released.
There’s not been a single complaint about the Series X hardware from any dev. Not about its IO. Not about its power. Not about memory. There’s very exciting possibilities based on its hardware accelerated features and wide GPU. For physics and ML especially. They need to solve the screen tearing. Hopefully patches will come soon. Otherwise most of this stuff is insignificant. The only narrative that truly is important is exclusives and Game Pass for Xbox hardware. People here shouldn’t sweat “narratives” so hard. Don’t let Twitter and YouTube trolls bother you that much. If anything, its good to know that so many now care about hardware capabilites. That should help Xbox in the long run.
It seems more Xbox gamers are stressed about narratives than the actual games. Don’t do that to yourselves.
it should be improved next year
FunFact: RYSE still looks incredible on XSX. It’s wild how much ahead of its time it was.
Troll? Please, go and read my post history. Go on GAF and read my post history, including me being banned for being too Xbox friendly. MS has really done a poor job this launch. The whole Halo - Craig disaster, no launch exclusives, and now weaker multiplat games after touting how much more powerful the XSX is. But you want a place where only positive things are said, or you’re not coming back? Good grief. It’s simple. You give MS praise when then they do good things, and you call them out when they do poor things. I game on Xbox. I went from Dreamcast to OG Xbox. I then went to 360. I was happy. I didn’t shit can MS over the RROD, because these things can happen. MS didn’t abandon people who go RROD’ed, they extended the warranty. I gave them props.
Xbox One was a disaster. I was angry with what MS did. I couldn’t support them for that. So I went PS4. Once MS turned it around and put out the Xbox One X, I sold my PS4 and got the Xbox One X. In fact I bought two of them. I have bought close to 200 games on it. I have two Xbox Live accounts.
I was really happy with what MS did with the XSX. They really want all out to try and put out a better console than Sony. I was annoyed with Halo. But then MS bought Zenimax, and it looked like MS was really taking it serious and we were going to match and exceed Sony with first party. Things were going great. Then we have the multiplat reviews coming in and XSX is trailing PS5. I mean, every single person is saying how Dirt isn’t even really a next gen looking game, and it still can’t match the PS5. Then we have average ports of Horizon 4. Then we have the CFO intimating that Bethesda games will be on PS5. My excitement at how the Xbox SX was going to roll this gen is suddenly drying up. Everything MS apparently did to address the short coming last gen is turning out to be not quite cut and dry.
MS deserve every bit of crap they catch at this point. And if you can’t express your frustration at all of this on a Xbox forum without being called a troll then that’s a worry. Do some.of those complaining over react? Sure, most likely. But let’s be REAL here, after the Xbox One, it’s not surprising some have PTSD about it.
Agreed. Best looking launch game on both the Xbox and PS4.
Okay lots to unpack here…
First it’s cross-gen launch titles that nobody will remember years from now when we’re knee deep in Avowed, Fable, and more. Secondly, ignore the CFO. We have Phil on record saying case by case basis. He makes the call. They can’t legally make any decisions yet. Also, his quote was not entirely accurate, he said something along the lines of “I’m not talking about exclusivity” or something.
Horizon 4 was handled by Panic Button and they said they are patching back in the SSO. Playground is deep in Fable and Horizon 5.
All of this shall (Game) pass.
Here, listen to the wise words of Mr Bob Marley.
These are fair points. I believe if Microsoft finished the previous gen stronger, they’d be receiving more benefit of the doubt now. I do think there’s a combination here of people legit disappointed and wanting to express that, people over-reacting and people trolling. It gets lumped together unfortunately and many people get unfairly characterized.
I’ll keep reiterating…the hardware is very good. Can’t find a developer who says it isn’t. They’re investing more than ever in tools and R&D for innovation in game development. More in 1st/2nd party to leverage that hardware. The studios aren’t ready to show yet because it’s early and an immature dev environment.
Being an early adopter has often had risks associated with it. Two of the highest rated consoles ever were the PS2 and 360. If this is the worst of the Xbox Series launch, it’ll be less painful on early adopters than it was for those early adopters on the other classic consoles.
