I mention that later in the post.
Don’t forget Forza.
You don’t need to use DirectX to utilize VRS. Vulkan supports VRS, so we can see you don’t need DX to support the feature. What you do need however is the hardware to support the feature and that hardware isn’t on the PS5.
Please, don’t do this.
Basically locked. There are minor stutters that can happen but they are so uncommon it happened only a handful times in hours of footage.
It’s tier 2, and very good either. If you need a static image zoomed at 4x to even tell there was some degradation to the picture then I’d say VRS did a good job selecting that pixel to be worsened ![]()
Look at the gears tactics PC review from Alex back when it launched for example, in there it was noticeable right away, and worse: Produced a worse image than just DSR + upscaling (and achieved lower performance savings compared to that as well). In here SX IQ is often best than PS5, even more so at stress points, and can achieve 40%+ higher resolutions.
Does it support Tier 2? It’s an entirely different tech.
They may not might Ms api 1:1 (Ms uses to separate it in tiers grouping hardware functionality), but yeah there are extensions (not sure if already merged into the main thing) for Vulkan that matches the same capabilities as VRS tier 2 in DX.
Though, Ms when announced SX did say it’s implementation was a bit above even Tier 2 (and there was a patent for them explaining some of that), but I don’t know how much at a driver level or actual hardware.
VRS Tier 2 is likely a RDNA 2/Nvidia hardware feature and doesn’t have any alternative on other platforms. Also primitive shader geometry engine is not same as mesh shading geometry engine.
I tried looking this up recently and couldn’t get any solid answers. If I remember correctly, I thought Vulkan offered tier 1 support before DX12 but not sure if Vulkan has kept up with DX12 on this front.
In the end my point really was that a system would need both API and hardware level support to use tier 2 VRS. The PS5 has neither.
for now. Intel and Qualcomm will support it in their coming GPUs.
Sony does not have custom solutions for the missing rdna2 features. They just lack them altogether.
Feature wise Ps5 gpu is simply rdna1 (without rpm for int) + raytracing.
I don’t know why VRS tier 2 is even a debate at this point for PS5. There has been no games on the platform that has it while we have 3 on the Xbox side. Plus Alex has already said that two different developers have confirmed the PS5 has no hardware support for it, or even APIs for that matter.
Yes, same for mesh shaders, sampler feedback, rpm for int…
I think its fair to say that the PS5 is a very mighty console but that the Series X is simply mightier and they outdid Sony in just about most things.
Just Microsoft stating clearly they have the only next-gen consoles with the full RDNA 2 set should have been clear.
I know, but people didn’t want to come to the logical conclusion and would rather conjure up theories that Sony has custom hardware for those features, even though AMD has perfectly functional hardware for them lol.
Think I can place this here too
While we haven’t seen any game implementing this yet, Midgar Studio CEO Jérémy Zeler-Maury recently told Wccftech DirectML support is the console’s best feature as it could allow awesome performance improvements and even other perks.
“For the Xbox Series X, it is the support of DirectML. I don’t think it’s used much yet, but machine learning will allow awesome performance improvements (ML super-resolution), style transfer for new art styles, emerging gameplay, etc…”
Indeed, we also got the same input a few months ago from Quantic Dream CEO David Cage. Is Microsoft still investing heavily into this area of research, though, as promised on the Xbox Series X launch day?
It would seem so, given two job openings that were posted not long ago. The first one went up just about a week ago, in fact, seeking a Senior Software Engineer who would clearly deal with DirectML applications for games.
So don’t basically all 120fps TV’s have VRR? If so, seems they recommend XSX version across the board, no?
Thing is any custom software solution that might possibly emulate some of the missing rdna features could also be done on the Series X in software but having dedicated hardware for these features is always going to perform better and be more efficient.
The Series X is more powerful and has a more advanced SOC, these are just facts not sure why people have issues dealing with that.
