Games Analysis |OT| Time To Argue About Pixels And Frames!

Yeah I think I’m going to move my save over to the PC version since I can have both RT and 60fps there.

I think comparing how the foliage sways is hard since that can be influenced by the weather.

I’m not looking for a debate. I’m asking you to support the claims that you always and only make in this thread. All you’re doing is drive by trolling with your claims and that’s not going to roll here. So either support your claims or keep them out of the thread.

Unless of course we’re taking of the Medium and then RT doesn’t matter to DF

Like I said, I’m not even going to try and debate with you over ‘DF.’ So leave it there…

Then stay out of the thread. Last warning. This isn’t the place for you to come in and spread nonsense without any checks on it.

I’ll debate over DF, just not with you.

The guy says the raytracing makes a world of difference.

Haven’t had a chance to watch yet, but I sure hope so! It’s ridiculous in the current version of the game, very distracting.

I cant tolerate 30fps anymore. I put up with it during the otherwise excellent X1X days when I sacrificed my PC gaming. But no more I tell thee.

My understanding is that there are some performance issues on occasion in the 60fps mode, which goes against what IGN are saying… Hope they’re very rare anyway. I have VRR, but I have better image quality with it off. I know both the XSX and PS5 have the hardware to be able to run PC settings on ultra at a locked 60fps 4k - based on what my very old PC could do. So its a shame if thats the case. Lets hope not.

I remember the bog area with the witches used to be the most intensive test area. But they’ve already mentioned Novigrad shows some drops… which to me raises an eyebrow of concern. You spend a large part of the game there… oh well fingers crossed.

Better image quality with VRR off? In which ways do you mean this?

As for the bog, you don’t mean Crookback Big, right? The one with the three witches part of the story? That area was always fine.

But the area where it always dropped frames, well the IGN guy says it was smooth as can be on PS5 when he played. So I’m gonna assume it’s exactly like that for XSX too.

In a way it’s disappointing that a game from 2015 can’t run without any framedrops. At the same time they did add new higher resolution textures and stuff and raytracing, that has to be taken into account. I’m gonna see for myself how big of a visual difference it is between the two modes and if performance mode doesn’t look significantly worse, I’m rolling with that.

So on my OLED you can get some gamma changes and you lose the ability for BFI when using VRR. Plus you can get flicker. On my Z9J, you get a touch more motion blur. To some these things are minor. But for me I’ve always seen VRR as a fix rather than an always have it on setting. I just prefer a properly locked and consistent 60fps with the very best image quality that the TV can provide. But yeah we can always fall back on VRR.

Unfortunately on this occasion I dont fully trust the IGN’s commentary - as much as I’d like to. The guy at one point thought the game was running 120fps… We’ll see soon enough. I love the game that’s why I want it tickety boo. I also wonder if they’ve improved the HDR. The original is essentially SDR in an HDR container.

Anyway dont mind me. The other Era thinks I’m negative. I prefer grounded and a realist.

Yeah, VRR sadly can introduce some unwanted stuff.

Back in July when I still had the LG C9 I would often keep VRR off too, unless a game really benefited from it, because it would raise the black levels on that TV, very annoying. But quite a few games on XSX now have benefited from VRR so it was a hassle to always have to enable/disable. Now with the Samsung S95B I don’t get raised black levels, but I do see some flicker while navigating through the OS, but I can live with that. If only VRR was without issues, it be perfect!

So I definitely get you on that thing, getting additional issues because of a feature is annoying af. I didn’t know that about the HDR in the game. I did notice very bright effects like fire and such and thought it was real HDR. If they give us proper HDR, that would be awesome. Sadly there are so very few sources that mention HDR anymore. DF kinda did in the past until they didn’t anymore. Now we have channels like GamingTech that does it, but that’s after a game has launched.

Found this today. I don’t play this game, but I might just download it to see how it looks on my setup. https://twitter.com/mr_liama/status/1599454712918872064?s=46&t=h5WAMNOhNxN73xgFiMohXQ

Yeah we used to have Vincent and/or EvilBoris do some analysis. And like you I enjoy GamingTech. Though I dont always agree with his settings. And to further complicate things, my TV can hit up to 3000 nits. So its a very niche display, so I’m definitely on my own with regards sussing settings. But I know my panel really well now which is good. And I do know what I’m doing - most of the time anyway.

You may find HDR Gamer a good source. As he often puts a meter on games and logs his findings on HDRGamer.com Because of course often in game calibration screens frequently differ from what actually happens in game. And also stated nits on sliders are often wrong. For example AC Valhalla may give you an option of up to 4000 nits but in reality its only ever hitting just over 2000.

I keep a spreadsheet of all my HDR settings too. So when I revisit a game, I just look it up and know what best settings to apply.

Very impressive.

You can see the cutbacks made to get it to run at 60fps on consoles, but the result is still impressive.

It is pretty crazy that when ray tracing was introduced by Nvidia back in 2018 that we would get it in console games running at high frame rates in 2022.

I can remember debates whether these consoles would even have hardware based raytracing lol.

It’s interesting that running Luma in software mode is faster than on the RT hardware on consoles. I wonder what approach the Coalition will take.

I’ll admit to being one of those people who thought we weren’t getting RT this gen. It was so hard to believe after seeing the huge price increases we saw with the 2000 series of Nvidia GPUs. Glad I was wrong even if AMD’s approach is lacking in comparison.

Same here. It was also to do with how expensive it was on the first wave of GPUs.

But it was said that developers would make optimisations to ray tracing and we are now here.

I assume they will use software based to target 60 fps per their own goals and Epic’s recommendations. I sounded like the diff is software uses abstractions/higher level estimations vs hardware using raytracing out to the triangles, thus being more costly (because it’s more accurate). I assume it’s still ‘hardware accelerated’ to do the raytracing despite being labeled as ‘software’.

60 FPS > Ray Tracing. At least for me.

Here probably too. DF said that in terms of the improved textures, models, effects etc that it’s the same in both modes. So unless performance mode has a visibly lower resolution (I notice it easily in Witcher 3 current version) I’ll opt for performance too.
