Games Analysis |OT| Time To Argue About Pixels And Frames!

100%. I felt compelled to add that part about GTA 6 because I don’t want anyone to think that I’m being unrealistic about this.

I’m just saying I think that Sony probably did their research much like how Microsoft did their research with the Xbox One X and saw the bottlenecks of all of the previously released games on the Xbox One and addressed it in the design of the X.

Leaning into upscaling is a smart plan IMO.

When Starfield was released on PC, and a ton of people incorrectly claim that it was “unoptimized” because they didn’t realize how taxing the game is on a computer’s CPU with all of the simulations, it became clear to people like us that the game was heavy on CPU usage. I am curious to see how well Hellblade 2 performs on the PC because I have a feeling that it’s GPU heavy. As such, upscaling could noticably help the performance.

My PC (which is three times the cost of the Series X) He’s mainly used for work but I love the option of just trying these games to see how they look like in these performance modes. My 4K TV doesn’t support 120 FPS unfortunately but I do try playing Halo Infinite on the PC to see how it looks like. We all know about this feature but I feel like it’s still underrated. It’s pretty awesome.

I watched the video, and like a lot of people in the comments I disagree with Oliver’s opinion on shadows. They look choppier, more juddery, and pixelated on PS5 but I know you have been pushing this type of stuff for a long time. Even if shadows look 1% sharper you would be ready to lose your shit. Something 99.99999999999% of players will never notice.

Of course the vast majority of players wont notice It. Does it make it ok? Not for me.

Did you watch the video or take the quote as gospel? I’m telling you I prefer the look of the xbox shadows, the ps5 ones are pixelated and juddery

I ve watched the video and I agree with the assessment. He also compares It with PC settings so theres that. We are in a enthusiast forum and the Xbox community is very devoted. It is not composed by casuals in general. I am sorry but I havent been pushing anything. I want Xbox to be the best place to play Xbox games to be true.

If it comes down to the clarity of a shadow then it might be time to take a step back.

Better draw distance though, why?

But really, I’m done with “worrying” over this, if folks think this is bad, once the Pro comes out and as the months/years pass by more Xbox games come to it…differences will probably be way bigger. It’s whatever.

I have a rule with comparison videos. The moment they have to zoom in 2 or 300 percent it goes from mattering to me as a game goes and only being a scientific curiosity.

Years later Port done by a different team on a different hardware with a game that didn’t push the visuals.

Unfortunately that’s not how many people see things online. This 300% zoom, will be used as a PS5 better vitrol for weeks even if Rare updates the game for paríty on Xbox in the future.

We saw with the 120fps mode on Pentiment, and we saw it with the shadows in Hifi Rush. It sucks but negative engagement, is what every other outlet out there thrives on because console warriors are looking for anything to say: my box better.

These are the types of headlines they face. The difference is negligible but they can’t really act like this is in a vacuum. Fair or not, this is the industry they are in and moves like this give ammo to SEO “tastemakers” (bleh) that can impact consumer choice.

and in the end, none of these headlines mattered and Sea of Thieves will gain 10 million more players and life will go on just fine

Life will go on fine, for sure. I’d even go so far as to argue this is the right move for SoT. It’s more so the impact these moves have on the ecosystem and Xbox console but we won’t know the full impact for a while.

It’ll have 0 impact. The default opinion among casuals and the general public is that games look better on the PS5 anyways.

I honestly have to wonder if some people have ever actually looked at shadows in real life? Because there’s no clarity or sharpness involved.

“Sharp” shadows in video games look completely unrealistic.

Worth noting is that the Xbox version will receive an update on the day SoT launches on PS5 - so, the comparison will most likely be moot lol

Also, if there was a shred of journalistic integrity, those HiFi Rush articles would have pointed out that the PC and Xbox settings are the same which means it had nothing to do with the hardware differences and more to do with the external port optimization.

i have to agree. if you want sharp shadows go play doom 3. if you instead go outside you see soft shadow edges on the ground.

Why was the sea of thieves thread locked ? I find it weird that discussions about Xbox versions of products being inferior is shut down.

It’s a fair issue to raise, even if the thing in question is so minor, that normal people won’t notice it, the enthusiasts notice and are aware, and it makes Xbox look bad.

No matter how minor, this isn’t parity and it’s not fair to Xbox console only gamers.

Threads with the discussion already existed, such as this one and the other one dedicated to Xbox Porting.

The thread was closed to condense discussion about graphics comparison… to the thread with graphics comparisons. There’s hardly any censorship going on, this is simply following the community’s wish not to have the string of constant FUD and hyperbolic negativity to spread to every thread (cross posting off topic articles/sentiments in irrelevant threads was a common occurrence in my absence and is against the ToS).

Furthermore, the comparisons are being made whilst the Xbox version has yet to receive its GDK update, which will see improvements to aspects of the game on said platform (the devs have literally stated as much), so just as @QuietGamer90 stated this is hardly a good-faith comparison and says a lot more about the state of DF (and the media who’s so quick to jump on these stories with absolutely no due diligence).

I really wish some of you would take a breath and remember that these situations are often weaponized by certain members to make a story out of nothing. At the very least, if shadows are that important to you, maybe wait until there’s a proper position to compare each from. It’s no different from DF using footage from games that had received a years’ worth of additional patches to one that just released on Xbox; regardless of what you think, that’s not a 1:1 comparison, especially since those same optimizations were made to the Xbox version after the comparisons were done.

Beyond that, there’s a pretty consistent attempt from some of you to constantly paint this picture that Xbox is doomed or they’re failing at every turn, and reality just doesn’t support that (I’d wager the April 25 financial results will provide another proof to that theorem). They’re all going semi-different routes, with Sony belatedly following quite a bit of Xbox’s template they began in 2017…
