God of War Laufey - Official Gameplay Reveal | PS5 Games

Introducing Laufey:

Cory Barlog Interviews Game Director:

Interesting choice. Faye’s death is a pillar of the whole soft reboot era. From what I read online it’s not a prequel and umm… seems like it gets weird. I swear to god guys don’t mess it up. The GOW franchise doesn’t need to get overly confusing and jump the shark into full MCU multiverse (multipantheon) shenanigans. I wasn’t even expecting a kinda sequel this soon. Expected GOW to take a break and then he just travels to Egypt or something.

That’s how you show off a game with just pure gameplay from the same stage for a good few minutes

Looks simply stunning, shame there’s no date, which means to me it’s a long way off

It feels like the fact it’s not a prequel kind of give me that feeling of “Have to tie-in to a popular franchise so I can get it greenlit.” But we’ll see.

Note to self: whenever Sony said 20 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay, take it like Michael Bay know the difference between story and special effect.

Second to GTA in my list of ‘I just don’t get why you’re all so excited about this, but OK’ stakes. I played half of the 2018 game on my PS4 and have never, ever had the urge to finish it. It was superbly ‘tight’ but never grabbed me. I just feel I’ve done it all before, so many times, and top-notch production values don’t change that. Same with Gears these days.

I have no doubt this will be extremely well-received and enjoyed by many. I just won’t be one of them.

“jump the shark”, that was exactly my sentiment. If it was a spin-off/what if thing, that would be fine, but it seems to be the evolution of the God of War franchise, so it will ultimately be a divisive game.

As you said, it also ruins the first scene from God of War 2018, which was powerful and had a meaning that is now being rewritten. It’s kind of a Last Jedi moment, depending on where they go with it.

Experimenting and going wild while making it look like a sequel to the story, so you have to get on board or you’ll get lost from a story perspective, is a very risky thing to do.

My spidey senses are telling me that this will be a precursor to explaining the next major God of War game with some pantheon change or they feel the need to over explain why Greek gods and Norse gods can exist in the same universe. But I’ve not seen anyone really begging for that information. As far as I could see it was just accepted that the world of GOW has multiple pantheons serving different cultures, and he could just go to a different region and have to deal with those gods. They knew who the Ghost of Sparta was in 2018. Mimir even commented on the Greek gods. This just reminds me of “We have to explain the magic.” which bites literally every franchise in the butt. Like bruh, no you don’t. We’re all on board. Explaining every little detail doesn’t help especially when it’s done so in a way that undermines the intrigue of the original story. The audience is always going to have questions that they don’t want answered.
