Problem is that she is the screenwriter for the new film series so her DNA is ingrained in those films.
Which is great because one film was average and the other was abysmal and this 3rd film looks just as incoherent and bad. So I’m thrilled that her name will continue to be associated not only with hateful bigots but shitty talentless screenwriters.
The game, while set in a universe created by her, has none of her active involvement so it is much easier to separate art from artist within that context.
Thing is, you shouldn’t need to justify to anyone else why you may love the HP universe as that fiction is not actively promoting transphobia and bigotry. It’s unrealistic to expect people to just up and quit being interested in something they’ve been attached to since childhood. Just because you like it doesn’t mean you condone or passively accept whatever spews from its creator. However, optics these days tries to suggest that they’re one in the same and that does nobody any favors and it creates unearned criticism on the fan which just further widens the schism.
At the end of the day, I think any person who is a fan of Harry Potter should not feel guilty for being interested in this game. It has no direct ties to Rowling nor any of her direct involvement. And it is being created by a studio of hundreds of individuals, some of whom may be LGBTQIA+ who are simply wanting to create a game that will be appreciated by the fans.
Or Neil Gaiman. Oh my god Neil, When I first saw Wanda in Game of you… god when was that 1990? and she was just normal, a normal woman protecting her best friend and even an old lady in the street and it didn’t matter to the main characters it was just normal… Such a wonderful thought.
As I recall reading Neil was horrified that people were often deadnamed at their funeral so added it in the story so that others would feel equally sickened.
I agree with this outlook - making people feel guilty isn’t going to help, for the want of a better word. It’s more undertanding and compassionate to let people know about the discourse around it, educate, and let them make up their own mind.
I think decrying it is being too political forgets that everything is political, no matter what.
The argument, laid out above and in other places, is that by buying this game you continue to amplify her vooice as the creator of the world. I think there is merit to the argument.
Unfortunately, literally everything is. You can’t just say that it isn’t, and then disagree when it’s plainly pointed out that they are.
I’d argue that gaming is the place where it is most important to be aware of politics in gaming because of the interactivity - you’re the actor, being the driving force, creating your story, and that makes it unique in that by making you do things or be things or make choices, you’re involved in the artform more than any other kind of art there is - it’s the magic of gaming, in my view.
And to pretend that isn’t a facet it a falsehood. You can ignore it, personally, but cannot deny it, generally.
HAAAA!!! Oh my god you’re not kidding!!! Oh my god did I ever fall for the bait.
OK so I can’t waste life explaining how ridiculous, stupid, and insulting the phrase “SJW battles” is when discussing this in 2022, I assume you’re a grown-up, read up on it. Or don’t and appear poorly read and lacking in humanity and empathy when you trot it out in polite company.
Neither shall I waste a jot of time on how insulting it is to liken her statements to a whole oppressed community as merely “Cringe” and that they should be “questioned” and not “condemned”.
“Only asking questions” I understand.
But you honestly believe games are apolitical and more than that should strive to be???
Sweet zombie jesus… Oh Jimmy did you ever pick the wrong hobby if you hate politics.
You know it’s not just “opinions”, right? JK Rowling actively supports politics and groups that go against transgender people. She’s using her power and money to destroy transgender people’s lives. It’s not just a bad take on twitter, get your head out of your ass.
I think UK people should have been more concerned about russian intrusions in politics (proved by official reports) which partially lead to Brexit and weakened western alliance than JKR, but again, to each their own. Also we are vastly OT.
I’ve got no interest in the Hairy Plopper universe so I’m not getting this, my two cents is, the only thing JK Rowling had to do with this game was licensing the franchise. That was it. She had no creative control, no say in anything, nothing.
I know she will be “rewarded” by buying the game, but even if this game was not made she still makes more money every day from other sources than this game. I understand not wanting to support her but I feel like the devs are getting punished for her actions because for the devs this game selling (and it will) is much more important for them than it is for JK Rowling.
It’s perfectly reasonable to talk about Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts, Hogwarts Legacy and other Wizard World topics without focusing on J K Rowling.
Some people like the escapism, some people like the fantasy, whatever the reason it’s perfectly viable and one woman’s ill-conceived views on gender recognition reform don’t change that.
By all means, hate on JKR, but harassing people who want to continue to enjoy Harry Potter only dilutes the arguments against her.
As I said before that the devs are “punished” if they are, is still the fault of Rowling, despite having little creative control to this adaptation of her work she is still the sole owner and beneficiary of it, we can’t change that…
That this is the “Legacy” of Hogwarts lies entirely at the feet of the Author not the people she has chosen to make it her work to attack.
