interesting
Kojima products experiencing the Xbox tax in real time. I actually feel sorry for them. This is exactly the type of article (releasing a statement that the entire business isn’t dead because some chuds on the internet are salty) that’d normally have “Xbox” in the title. I’d like to say that people will see this and do some reflecting on their unhealthy relationships to for profit corporations and the real harm tribalism does to the industry, but who am I kidding?
On the PS5 subreddit they are already in “coping mode” (I mean that’s understandable but still interesting to see), they are talking about it as a “business decision” from Sony, because you don’t put emotions into a business decision.
Yet, the partenership with Kojima is all about emotions: the relationship with players, his fans, the actors he chooses, all of the theories that are already emerging and all the mystery that surrounds his work, his influences, his collaborations with movie directors and musicians, it’s all about the art and the emotions. You can’t buy that, as there’s only a few studios that can have this impact on the whole industry.
People don’t care about profitability, but we all are very curious about what these 2 projects will be, good or bad.
I talked about how I was curious and a bit jealous of Death Stranding exclusivity on PlayStation, because it is undeniable that the game has pushed the medium and hardware at the time (remember it’s a PS4 game).
So yeah, profitability is a plus, of course, these games should sell and Death Stranding probably didn’t sell as good as Sony wanted, but it surely got a lot of people passionate about it and it will still be talked about years from now. That is what gaming is for.
So many “fans” of Kojima, Final Fantasy, etc. in the end turned out to be fans only as long as the games were Playstation exclusive lol. Just pathetic.
is Schreier a sony spokens person?
Yeah, a lot of fake fans are showing their true colors.
What’s shitty is how they are trying to push Kojima under the bus. Not only the fans, but the media too, it’s despicable.
EDIT: Resetera taking it well, as always…
No, he’s a professional reporter that people get mad at if his information doesn’t match what they hope to be true.
Resetera thread is as eye rolling as expected.
The push on the narrative that “Sony was right to cancel, Kojima don’t know what he’s doing” is crazy to me. How could you say that after praising the two Death Stranding games to no end ? And they are using Schreier report as a proof that Physint development had problems. They are trying to find the right angle so it distracts from the insane decision from Sony and it doesn’t help anyone.
The two DS games has been well received and are still very well liked in communities and they are trying to change that !! This is insane to me!
One last thing that is quite funny and that no one is pointing out, is that Xbox didn’t try to cancel OD! They may well be happy and understanding of the hiccups the studio faced regarding actors strikes and the complexity of these innovative projects. And Xbox’s OD seemed to be the most experimental of the two projects!
I am not surprised. It’s a reminder to people who are still in denial about Xbox tax. I have been saying that the things that Sony does, the console war theatrics, Xbox can’t just do the same and expect the same results and praise from all those PlayStation fanboys who run most of the traditional gaming media. It’s never been about the games, exclusives, Kojima, Final Fantasy, God of War, or whatever else. It has always been about the console their parents got them in the 90s.
That’s what Tom Henderson is reporting btw.
Canceled in a Zoom call. The two offices are one street apart…
It’s amazing how quickly the new consensus has taken hold, that Kojima is irresponsible, the game is doomed, it was never going to be good, etc.
We want MGS V Chapter 3, KONAMI!! Am I right ?
We’ve been through that already. Kojima was always like that, making insane collaborations that cost a lot of money, rewriting stuff until it fits its vision. And I’ll say Death Stranding 1 and 2 developments were pretty smooth compared to MGS 4 and V, it’s not even comparable, and PS fans know that very well.
They should probably rename that site to PlayStationEra.
It’s funny for Kojima to see the other side. When he was basically canned by Konami there was no articles defending Konami. Now that sony canned him, he is the bad guy now. I think this lights a fire under him. Even Luka got in shape.
I’m not a big Kojima fan but he’s one the industry’s best creators of all time. Loved Snatcher and MGS 1998. MGS 2 was great but I hated playing as Raiden. After that, I beat Ground Zeroes and played MGS 5 for around 50 hours until hidden mechanics turned me off. Couldn’t wash the blood off of Snake and he had a big horn sticking out of his forehead. SMFH. No interest in Death Stranding 1/2, MGS 3/4.
Anyway, while I have zero interest in Overdose, im very much looking forward to Physint and have been since it was announced almost three years ago. If it’s half as great as MGS 1998, it’s going to be a great game.
As for “fans” turning on him, im not surprised due to them being ponies. I wouldn’t expect anything less. As for Scherier, he’s a reporter but he’s also a massive Sony and PlayStation fanboy who’s said on numerous occasions that he wished Microsoft didn’t enter the gaming industry (despite being in gaming long before Sony) and that Xbox would die out so him favoring Sony doesn’t surprise me either as im sure he got his orders from his corporate overlords.
Luckily im not on any other forum so if people are going nuts over a video game, I’ll never see it. lol
The elephant in the room of course being that if the almighty Sony business analysts are right now then that means they were wrong to have ever made those deals in the past. Either Sony made a mistake now or then, but lol it can’t be both ways.
Look I said the same thing when Xbox cut all of its studios and all of a sudden games like Keeper & South of Midnight were always big time failure mistakes despite the community previously going out to back on how creative and great they were in the past. Especially with how sales kept coming up as the major reason despite the known strategy being day one GP and even Microsoft praising those games for contributing to successful GP revenue.
Businesses say what they need to say when it suits them to look good. Sure. But it’s really disgusting when people start the blind loyalty brigade and back tracking to realign their opinions to the about face their chosen for profit corporation has made. It really sucks when we drag art and creative works into this.
Business is business and finances are an important part of it. Unfortunately we’ll never be privy to all the honest to god true details that go into making these decisions from companies like Sony or Microsoft or any publisher. We’ll never even really know whether these decisions are good or bad for the platform. To do so we’d need to run like Futurama (best episode of the Hulu revival) simulation realities to see how things play if they’d made the opposite decision. I’m saying it’s insane to me how much effort is put in by people to justify these decisions from for profit entities. Maybe it was the right one, maybe it wasn’t. I am wondering where all this outrage over the company spending money on this project was BEFORE they announced they’d stop spending it. Like yes, I too get mad about what was being funded AFTER it stopped being funded. It’s crazy to me how everyone is happy to support this stuff, until that make over 20 billion in gaming revenue annually tell us they don’t wanna spend the money anymore.
I don’t have a problem with anyone having their own personal dislikes or likes. My problem with modern journalist in all media is reporters have their own personal views and use the information they gather to forward those ideals. Back in my day that was called editorial and not journalism.
I believe John from Digital Foundry also said something similar once about how the industry would’ve been better if Xbox hadn’t been in it or left, been a while so I probably forgot the entire quote, and their commentary on Xbox is never positive even when there’s nothing bad going on in the division in their podcast they do, I don’t think it’s an exaggeration or a lie to say that plenty of gaming journalists and gaming media personalities did grow up with PlayStation and have a bias towards the brand and aren’t very good at hiding it, Xbox hasn’t gotten fair treatment by the media in a long time, sadly because of it’s parent company they will often do things that make it easy to attack them.
I could be wrong but has Playground ever gotten the recognition they deserve at TGA? Best arcade racing franchise for well over a decade now and I’m sure they’ve never gotten recognition for that.
