There’s always going to be a mental block with some people that a Sony first party game can just miss.
Witness people still trying to go to bat for The Order 1886 and Days Gone as misunderstood masterpieces that critics just Didn’t Get.

Both Midnight Suns and Guardians of the Galaxy were excellent templates for a good X-Men game. Unfortunately both games were critically reviewed great and loved by players with 8s and 9s, but didn’t have the sales. They have less of a well known status than the catastrophic failure of Marvel’s Avengers.

No, for a leading first party studio with all the resources, time, and privileges available to them, you should not be okay with fairly standard games. Even if you enjoy them you should ask for more relative what is being invested into. $200-300m and 400-500 people teams, it’s not a mid size independent AA studio like for example the recently released and similar fairly standard Plague Tale Resonance.
I’ve not played much of Midnight Suns, but GoTG is a great shout.
Learning today that QTEs that can’t be failed and gameplay sequences that play themselves if you put down the controller are totally normal and something that every action game has, nothing to see here.
I honestly don’t begrudge people liking the game, like what you like, I’m sure I like some bad games too. But I am going to continue to find the cope to be funny.
I was watching a video on YouTube and it showed that you can disable autocomplete QTE but by default it’s enabled.
I watch some streams, just random twitch streamers, and they were weirded out by all the hand holding and how much on rail it was, like “Oh, of course they show me the window I have to go through”. It’s not just QTE, it’s the whole game that seem very safe in a very bad way. We’re just exhausted about all these tropes, the non-stop talking, the lines on the floor, colors on the walls and fake focus modes, which show games that are too afraid of you losing interest. Even The Witcher 3 has been criticized for its detective mode a decade ago. The problem is even bigger here when it’s all the game has to offer.
Back in my days, QTE was a sin. That’s why Ryse got bashed on. Now it is beloved. But seriously, seeing some not leading to punish is just weird. Are we really getting to the point that we can’t afford to do failed path.
I never seen so many folks who only report news talking about this game for the sake of defense. Like you can like the game, no problem. They don’t have to speak like we are the problem.
Yeah, 007 First Light also has been criticized with that garbage truck section you couldn’t fail.
Didn’t follow much. There were a lot more positives though.
These no failstate sections in games are a meme now.
In this section in First Light, you basically are on a rail and can’t go out of the road.
They are entitled to their opinion but maybe they shouldn’t tell me what I should or shouldn’t be ok with.
I tried the 360 one last year. I think i got to the third level and then stopped. This marvel stuff is just not for me. Framerate is also terrible. The only novel thing it has going is the gore and that its still a criminal offense to own or sell it here in good old Germany ![]()
The new one looks even more uninteresting.
Saw some Digital Foundry guy comparing it to Ryse and thinking thats a positive thing. Yeah.
I played the game today for approximately 6 hours. It’s not bad or anything like that but it’s not to the level of Sony’s other games like God of War, TLOU, Uncharted, etc. I would say that it being around an 8.0/10 is probably where it should be.
Let me say that I played the prologue last night on hard and died multiple times as well as several times during the boss fight that ends the prologue. I decided to start over today and play on easy. I have died once or twice but it’s so much more enjoyable because it doesn’t feel like every enemy is a hack and slash sponge.
My biggest negative by far is the camera. Even with “camera follow” and the “combat camera assist” on, the camera is abysmal. I tested on hard last night with the camera to the side of Wolverine and sprinted. I did this four times and not once did the camera rotate behind me. I don’t understand why. There’s either another option that im missing or perhaps it’s just bugged/glitched.
Besides the camera, the blue trail is bad and no, you can’t turn it off. The purple trail is just for the nightmare doors. And yes, the pulsing blue beam is for the chests with the materials in them and yes, I did miss one of them. I thus far have 100% completed all the other chapters.
I like the story and characters thus far but some of the writing is just poor. The performances thus far have been really good and is what is carrying the story through eight missions. Gameplay/combat is definitely brutal to see the least. Some of the platforming is clunky and finicky. After the camera, my biggest issue is the lack of control with Wolverine and what I mean by that is at times, I want to go after a certain enemy but it’s like the game is trying to force you to fight who’s in front of you. When there’s snipers, I go after them first but trying to them at times is a pain in the ass.
The main issue with this happening is in my opinion due to the camera as it’s too damn close in general. When sprinting, the camera zooms out which is what the camera in general should have been. Visuals are really good as is the audio. No issues with either.
I know you can’t fail the QTE’s but I still press them anymore as more of a natural reaction than anything. Overall thus far, I would say that Wolverine is what you would expect it to be from a Sony first party studio for the most part but not at the level of the games I mentioned at the start of this post.
You also can’t turn off the enemy detection arrows and the light that goes around the edge of the screen to let you know enemies are in the area which is annoying. There’s also a general way point icon in the game (like every game) which in all honesty, is all you need in order to know where to go in regards to the main objectives.
All of this other stuff should have been an optional on/off setting but for whatever reason, Insomniac decided not to despite you being able to turn off all of this stuff in Spider Man.
One last thing in this long post which is what led me to going from hard to easy and that’s the parrying in the game. I’m not good at parrying and especially on boss fights, you need to be able to parry well and that’s definitely not me. lol
Will post again once I complete the game.
EDIT: Just realized I posted in the wrong topic. Duh. lol
People believe Sony had influencer to play the game to convince the audience, including some who hardly do one. Apparently, that’s backfiring on them with them actually saying don’t purchase it. If true about the push, whoops.
Do people like QTEs? I wish modern games would get rid of them all together. They were just boring in FF16. That’s one of the main things that made that game a slog at the start. In Dispatch they felt out of place. And in Crimson Desert I just so don’t care. Autocomplete being on by default just sounds like insomniac themselves saying they don’t like QTEs but shoving them in anyway.
I thought they were mostly out of style by now and I’m surprised that Wolverine even has them. I did turn them off in Dispatch. ![]()
