Microsoft Gaming gets a new CEO as Phil Spencer Announces Retirement and Sarah Bond Leaves Xbox

Just as if we needed a reminder that everything sucks and the world’s fallen into the worst possible timeline

Like I’ve been saying, the next few years are not going to be good for anyone.

Huh, the thing that sucks for me is that we don’t even know if the person in charge has good intentions for the brand. I do not want another Don Mattrick.

Like, sure give the person a chance to prove themselves and all that, am down for it. But when i hear that hte person behind it was part of an ai division for microsoft makes me incrediblt queasy for the future and makes me wonder if Satya was the one to choose or if he let Phil make the choise for successor in the end.

I completely understand Phil retiring, 38 years is a long time. Put in the work and then some. He earned his ride off into the sunset.

The new lady doesn’t seems terrible either, she has only been at MS for 1.5 years and that seems to be the entirety of her work with AI. She seems to be saying the right things initially as well.

Sharma is a former VP of Product and Engineering at Meta and former Instacart COO who is also a board member of The Home Depot. She joined Microsoft in 2024. In her email to Microsoft staff, she wrote, in part: "My first job is simple: understand what makes this work and protect it. That starts with three commitments. First, great games. Everything begins here. We must have great games beloved by players before we do anything. Unforgettable characters, stories that make us feel, innovative game play, and creative excellence. We will empower our studios, invest in iconic franchises, and back bold new ideas. We will take risks. We will enter new categories and markets where we can add real value, grounded in what players care about most. I promoted Matt Booty in honor of this commitment. He understands the craft and the challenges of building great games, has led teams that deliver award-winning work, and has earned the trust of game developers across the industry.

"Second, the return of Xbox. We will recommit to our core Xbox fans and players, those who have invested with us for the past 25 years, and to the developers who build the expansive universes and experiences that are embraced by players across the world. We will celebrate our roots with a renewed commitment to Xbox starting with console which has shaped who we are. It connects us to the players and fans who invest in Xbox, and to the developers who build ambitious experiences for it.

"Gaming now lives across devices, not within the limits of any single piece of hardware. As we expand across PC, mobile, and cloud, Xbox should feel seamless, instant, and worthy of the communities we serve. We will break down barriers so developers can build once and reach players everywhere without compromise.

"Third, future of play. We are witnessing the reinvention of play. To meet the moment, we will invent new business models and new ways to play by leaning into what we already have: iconic teams, characters, and worlds that people love. But we will not treat those worlds as static IP to milk and monetize. We will build a shared platform and tools that empower developers and players to create and share their own stories.

As monetization and AI evolve and influence this future, we will not chase short-term efficiency or flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop. Games are and always will be art, crafted by humans, and created with the most innovative technology provided by us."

Now we find out if she follows through on those words.

The intentions that matter here are not this person’s, it’s Satya and his AI psychos’ intentions

The AI bubble burst is going to be catastrophic at this rate.

Is it too much to want a world where genocide isn’t actively celebrated, pedophiles are held accountable, and people can make art without having to meet the never-satiated greed of the worst of humanity?

Fuck me for being a fan of Star Trek specifically for “being woke” and imagining a universe where humanity was smart enough not to be duped by the true problematic minority, the rich, and could move beyond tribalism, I guess…

/rant, it’s been a….decade if I’m honest :upside_down_face:

Since 2020 it felt like nothing is allowed to be normal and good again, for some reason…

Also, can we unilaterally agree to never refer to a woman as “a young girl”?

I didn’t want to make a reference to the largest, worst situation occurring at the moment, but when I saw that comment, my eye started to twitch…

I’m usually the eternal optimist, but I’m feeling more pessimistic than usual. It’s not a surprise Phil is retiring as that’s been on the table for the last few years, but Bond leaving is a surprise. I guess we’ll see what, if anything, changes.

Watch as the the first horrible decisions made under her will solely be attributed her being a woman by gamers™

People need to step back a bit. She is a CEO, she is basically guiding the business, she doesnt need to be an elite gamer.

I’m for sure more surprised that Sarah Bond steps out too, she is really been prepared to be the new CEO and just decided to leave together with Phil.

True, but the main concern lies solely on one issue, and the sole issue here. Was this the person Phil wanted to replace him with, instead of Sarah Bond(With many of us having thought she was supposed to be the next CEO), or was this person chosen by Satya himself to further his need for AI and did this by forcing Sarah to resign?

Labeling her an AI plant is a little disingenuous though (my paraphrasing, not your words). Her 1.5 years at MS seems to be her only affiliation with AI from what information we have at the moment.

I agree its a valid concern, but it was a concern with or without her.

Definitely worried, but I’m going to wait and see how things turn out.

This is one of those things that is gonna lead to that tread podcast type talk thing, isn’t it?

Wait and see i guess. Let’s see if this person is good for the ecosystem.

Yes, definitely. The timing, the departure of Phil and Sarah… Even if the replacement is Gabe Newell himself, people will contextually assume the worst of things orchestrated by Satya’s leadership and his deranged AI fantasies

It’s all we can do now, Phil was a constant for the Xbox platform and if Jez is to be believed(which mostly yeah), he was the pillar that kept Xbox around when Microsoft was looking to close it. Now we can only hope that Xbox being their only consumer product and having had a lot of success even as it died(lol), is enough to keep it going under new management.
