Last week, we mentioned how Gears of War: E-Day had been receiving quite a lot of praise for its Xbox Series S version, and how The Coalition had implemented a technique to help realise the game’s potential on that console.

Today, we thought we’d dig into it a little more. In a nutshell, The Coalition found a way to use the Xbox Series S’s SSD storage as an extra form of memory, working in tandem with Xbox to make it happen.

“In short, the game uses the SSD as a new tier of memory to supplement the 10GB of GDDR6 on Series S, with a bespoke system developed in collaboration with Xbox’s platform team and Advanced Technology Group.”

That quote above is coming from the folks at Digital Foundry, who believe that the technique “could be used as a blueprint for future games on Xbox Series S and other memory-constrained platforms”.

Rockstar probably already have a similar tech for GTA 6

It’s great to see this late in the generation. Especially for people like me who are accepting that they probably won’t be able to get a next gen console for a while after it releases. Plus working with restrictions like this and finding ways solutions often just improves development in general. As we’re looking at the console marketing imploding with these prices, I think people will continue (really started with the Steam Deck) to appreciate studios that can make the most of older & more budget hardware. Series S apology tour here we come.
