New Final Fantasy game timed exclusive to PS5

I’m really glad I don’t care about Final Fantasy at all or I’d be a little upset that Sony is basically paying Square Enix to not put an entire series on Xbox.

FFXVI looks like it will play very well for an action RPG, and the story will be FF. It will sell a ton of PS5’s on the name alone

Simple answer

I’m sure it will sell well based on the name. As a fan of the franchise though, I am highly disappointed with what I’ve seen of it. The atmosphere /setting, the gameplay, the story setup, the characters, the art. I’m just very unhappy in general with the decisions they’re making on final fantasy and sad that one of my favorite all time franchises to me is morphing into an unrecognizable franchise that I probably won’t even be able to get interested enough to play.

just like RE you will probably wait for long time before it hit gamepass.

sony will probably have it first on PS Now (timed for the service as well lol)

Sony doens’t give a shit about PSNow. Theyd have to pay Capcom a lot. RE8 is going to sell a lot on PS consoles. Capcom would demand a hefty fee. Whereas on Gamepass…Capcom know Xbox sales are lower so gamepass deal makes more sense.

they have first negation for service like deals, also accepting PS now money is profit money. so 1-2 years later and the game reach $10-$20 how much money they can make compared to accepting PS Now Money ?

PSnow has like what? 3m subs top? Theres a reason why Sony don’t put their first or any first party games on it for a long time. And Village will come to Gamepass before PSnow. Sony won’t pay the money to Capcom that MS will.

Also RE7 sold like 3-4 million after 2017. Village will continue to sell for years. Be it 60 50 40 or below.

I believe Sony have a clause on the game for game pass stuff hence why Louay brings it up.

I do wish interviewers would ask Phil about the SE - Xbox relationship. Of course, getting DQ is great, but Final Fantasy suddenly dropping all support for the platform indicates underlying issues that should be addressed.

In terms of AAA third party IPs, Final Fantasy is the only one doing this. Why?

Why are Microsoft sitting on their hands while Xbox owners are punished for choosing their console and environment for this gen?

Or, perhaps a better question, why is this entire situation happening at all? Why did MS allegedly need to buy Zenimax to stop Bethesda being paid for exclusivity too? Why is a trillion dollar company unable to fight fire with fire when it comes to Sony?

I’m done with SE and FF, the damage they’ve caused to their own brand is irreparable, but if it could happen with them it could happen with others too. MS needs to nip this in the bud fast.

What do you expect them to do? Timed exclusives are going to be a thing.

I’d argue that buying a publisher is more than fighting fire with fire. Its odd to me that Microsoft bought Elder Scrolls and Fallout and we’re sitting here talking about how little they do because Sony has been making moves on FF.

They don’t have to be a thing and there’s no precedent for AAA third party IPs being timed exclusive to the degree we’re seeing with FF. 7 Remake will be a minimum two years, XVI and this Origins are both confirmed to eventually hit PC but Xbox is nowhere to be seen.

My point is, acquisitions are normal. This isn’t. It’s like Sony are getting the benefits of acquiring SE without actually doing it. Why aren’t MS upping the stakes to keep the IP on their platform?

Buying Zenimax doesn’t suddenly mean we can stop caring about Square Enix games.

They will be a thing as long as it makes business sense and there isn’t anything we can do about it.

Acquisitions are normal, timed exclusives are normal. We can argue that both Bethesda (as an acquisition) and FF (as a timed exclusive) are on the extreme side of things.

Its just weird to me that people act like MS is sitting around playing nice when they bought a huge publisher and made their games exclusive. Those are a number of huge games that PS owners will never see.

You’re missing the point.

Zenimax isn’t a counter to paying third party devs for exclusivity. A counter would be offering money to keep the IP multiplatform and/or Game Pass deals - buying Zenimax in no way, shape or form combats Sony paying for SE, Capcom or others to not release their games on Xbox.

Yes, Bethesda games won’t be on PlayStation, but that’s because they are Xbox first party games. There is no precedent for AAA third party games to consistently skip a platform, particularly when the development gap between the systems has never been narrower.

On a final note, these Final Fantasy games aren’t confirmed “timed” exclusive at all, full console exclusive is all we know and by the time Xbox gets a look in we could be at a new generation, if at all.

I’m not really missing the point, I just don’t think that an acquisition doesn’t count just because it is now first party. The end goal is to get people into your ecosystem by providing content they can’t get elsewhere. Microsoft chose to buy, Sony chose to lease.

  1. Again, we don’t know if these games are timed exclusive or not. FF7r was supposedly timed for a year, then that was renewed for another year. But that’s from PC, no Xbox version has ever been muted at all.

  2. Sony have also bought dev studios and will continue to do so. Acquiring intellectual property isn’t the same thing at all.

  3. Nobody says the Zenimax acquisition “doesn’t count”, but it’s not relevant to the discussion. Final Fantasy is a AAA third party IP, The Elder Scrolls is a AAA first party IP. Sony can’t touch TES now, but there’s absolutely no reason MS can’t step in over Final Fantasy.

And that’s ultimately my point. SE are apparently going for a quick paycheck from Sony in lieu of lost revenue and brand devaluation, but why aren’t MS offering financial incentive to bring the games to Xbox? They need to stop the poaching of AAA 3rd party games and it’s well within their capability to do so.

I’ve always enjoyed a good souls or souls-like, but I think I’m starting to burn out a bit much in the same way I’ve been fairly burned out on “Metroidvania” and “rogue like” games as of late. Hearing “FF souls like” isn’t exactly the best news to me, but who knows and maybe it’ll be just what I’ve always wanted?

I believe Sony is focusing hard on this because Xbox has clearly made in roads at Japanese publishers (including square) and has been whittling down the titles that were formerly exclusive to Nintendo or Playstation. Playstation is essentially losing exclusives left and right at places they didn’t even play for exclusivity, so they’re trying to protect the Japanese franchise most associated to them and distract from what is going on with Xbox.

Agree,

Shared my thoughts before and I can tell that Xbox fans are asking the wrong direction (3P companies) while the right one is Xbox. Microsoft money can’t afford what Sony has for devs, and Microsoft should already know that since ScaleBound cancellation. Platinum Games confirmed that there is no issue between them & Microsoft & ScaleBound was in healthy phase but the sad reality even if the game was successful it doesn’t mean the team’s future is secured.

“Success” is what’s devs looking for. Sony has the customers, fans, hardcore/ casual audience, top tier marketing, media, Global presence … everything to be successful as a developer, and as long as Xbox can’t compete in one of these features, Xbox will stay as a second choice for devs.

So basically “Xbox customers” asking why 3P skipping the 2nd choice but not the 1st choice? That’s what I meant in the beginning.

==================

On the other hand, Xbox did a ( LOT ) for earning 3P support since 2017 and yet has a ( LOT MORE ) to do, can’t deny that. But the ultimate goal still to win 3P support day & date with PlayStation consoles.

I think Xbox fans has to do their part also on this case, ask Xbox execs, do petitions, support 3P by building fanbase in Xbox communities on internet … etc.

This is BS imo, Scalebound was botched by Platinum and MS is a second choice for devs? It seems a resetera post, lmao. MS can offer to devs much more than Sony, which offer is limited by the consoles they can sell. People seems to forget what MS is, they are simply not really bringing the cash in the eastern land, the moment they do, Sony money will never be enough, we have already seen in the past when they didn’t even had the full CEO commitment.
