“What About Standard USB External Drives for PS5?” is like xbox series x with USB External Drives

Do we have an article about all external drives possible for XSX please?

Xbox wire

So basically, for you to be able to play PS5 games on a SSD, you will have to buy one resembling the PS5’s in terms of performance, otherwise it would be a big problem. It is the equivalent of the expension card on Series X ( albeit more complicated to install), while any other external SSD or HDD will only be able to play old-gen games, or store next-gen games.

All in all, the same as the Series X, just with approved NVME PCI 4.0 SSD instead of expension cards.

It’s exactly the same as XSX yeah, but with XSX it’s a simple matter of insert a card whereas for PS5 you need to open the whole damn thing up.

But I don’t know a ton about these things, however it does seem there don’t seem to be external SSDs yet that will also let you run the PS5 games from too.

I haven’t somewhat taken apart a console since PS2 and that was just to get to the disc lens. But I agree with your post completely.

Sony over engineered the fucking shit out of the PlayStation 5. Like, holy hell!!! I’m still trying to get one for launch but im very happy that it will be my secondary exclusives only console. And having to vacuum the dust ports is ridiculous. SMH.

I wonder are these SSDs expensive that have the exact same specs as the internal on PS5?

But my biggest beef I guess is, external SSD won’t work it sounds like. Sounds to me MS has the much better solution with their SSD cards.

These type of SSD are also around $180-$250.

Wondering if we gonna see an kotaku piece saying they are not ready for the Ps5 size lol. Jokes aside, I think it is good they finally showed their hw, which in my opinion seems over engineered and shown in a sterile environment.

Looks like those Russian leaks may have been real. I hope the UI leaks turn out to be fake though; it looked very cheap and awful.

Also, why not just say RDNA2? Why does he say RDNA 2 based? Does that mean the system does not use full RDNA2 or am I looking too much into this? Microsoft just says custom RDNA2.

Either way, Microsoft did a good job designing the Series X because this looks HUGE.

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO UPGRADE YOUR PS5 NVMe SSD Storage

  1. Buy the correct NVMe SSD M.2 module meeting the required bandwidth and specifications => PCIe Gen4x4 >= 7GB/s read (Sony not releases a compatibility list yet)

  2. Take off the side panel (be careful that it doesn’t break)

  3. Open the M.2 slot enclosure with a fitting screw driver

  4. Fit the M.2 module into the slot

  5. Fasten the module with a screw and a fitting screw driver (may be different than the first one). Screw comes with the M.2 module.

  6. ((OPTIONAL)) Apply thermal pads to the NVMe SSD M.2 module to make contact to the enclodure lid (for improvement of cooling).

  7. Close enclosure with the screw driver from 3)

  8. Reapply side panel (be again careful that it doesn’t break in the process)

Done.

  1. Buy the expansion card.

  2. Plug it into the expansion slot of your console

AMD is also being very shady with the way some cards are considered RDNA 2 or not. It is enterely possible that the PS5’s GPU may have just some RDNA 2 features like Ray Tracing, and it could be designed as RDNA 2.

Okay so I went back and listened to it again, and there’s actually no mention of either architecture; I think I had misheard how he described the “boost” clocks. The fact that it clearly states “Zen 2” on the CPU and “RDNA-2 Based” for the GPU however speaks clear enough to the reports that it’s not a full-fat RDNA-2 GPU are true (complete lack of mesh shading, being just one visible example prior to this teardown).

So, it does not have full RDNA-2?

Very cool, thanks for that man. :ok_hand:t5:

Isn’t it strange that one Sony side the cooling solution is more expensive for a weaker system overall?

It really shows something changed during the course of the previous years…

Just like the Xbox you can have an external drive, SSD or regular HDD but you can’t play next-gen games off of them. The USB spec is not fast enough to match the internal drive. The PS5 will allow for “off the shelf” NVME SSDs to be placed in that expansion slot. However the drive needs to meet certain specs to work and we don’t know how Sony is handling making sure people buy the correct one. There may be a list of approved drives Sony puts out, or there may be some type of certification required and there will be a “works with PS5” label on the drives. It isn’t as open as some are making it out to be.

So in theory PS5’s solution should be cheaper but that depends on how strict Sony is with approving these. MS could similarly have different approved vendors come on board later, though they may not want to create a drive to MS spec, card slot, hot swappable, etc… The PS5 spec drives should be just basic PC specs.

They are salty in general right now. I literally posted about how cool it is that xbxo were able to make a console that small and I have like 8 guys on me withing minutes trying to downplay it. One of them even keeps harping on the fact that the SX uses more expensive components like that is a strike against it.
