Going to be honest. I thought this game was gonna be average at best. Didn’t give a shit about it from the trailers/gameplay i saw.
Obviously gamepass, i figured i’d give it a shot.
16 hrs later, this is MY goty hands down. I was addicted within an hr. The game seemed to do everything right. Didn’t waste my time and I was engaged the whole time wanting to see what’s next. It made me feel like i was figuring things out on my own, while the devs were secretly directing me the whole time.
The music, the platforming, the story, i can go on and on. It’s a game you just have to play, video’s don’t do it justice. first game in years i played that i actually looked forward to seeing what’s next. haven’t felt that way since mario 64.
The sites that allow user reviews should require integration with the platform they’re reviewing on. It’s already a solved problem elsewhere (TrueAchievements, TrueTrophies). In order to review for Xbox/Playstation on all these large review sites, the review platform should integrate with xbox live / playstation network, scan their user gamertag, and pull in game playtime metrics. No game play metrics - no review. For those validated, this playtime metrics should be shown right alongside the user’s review.
Well, finished the story this morning (think I will keep collecting for a while still) and this is easily one of the best games I have played in the past few years.
To get the negative out if the way – it frustratingly falls short of masterpiece status as a result of combat mechanics that could do with being a but tightened up, enemy NPCs that needed a bit more work, and a few bits of rough-around-the-edges-ness throughout. There was one boss fight (the whirlpool) that while narratively strong felt very loose gameplay-wise. Barely felt like I was playing it.
It’s frustrating because if you take everything else this game offers and add slightly smoother mechanics throughout and you have (I believe) a hands-down 10/10. As it is, I’d give it a 9.
It was so endlessly inventive from beginning to end – in both level design and visual flair –the story so engrossing, the humour on point throughout that I actually feed sad that the story is over. A tremdous game.
I love that it is at its heart an old school 3D platformer, where camera control is as important as character control and there is some real challenge to the traversal. I wonder how younger gamers – who have grown up with game where ‘traversal’ is just pressing A anywhere vaguely near a ledge to trigger a perfectly canned animation with no risk of falling – manage with. I hope they enjoyed it, but I know I had a blast anyway.
Just can’t wait to see what Double Fine can achieve when they develop a game from beginning to end with MS budget and resources behind them, and all the creative restraints of having to find funding removed.
Alright, so honestly who else is guilty of having slept a bit on the acquisition of Double Fine in 2019? This is an incredible game and this studio is bonkers.
I’ve been Playing Psychonauts 2 for a couple of days and loving it so far, I know it sounds crazy but I think this is my favorite game I’ve ever played, I don’t know how the game ends yet but I really hope they don’t make us wait another 16 years for part 3.
You’re not the only one, after trying this game I’m sure that with the right budget DF can deliver stellar quality games. Maybe it will be the same for Undead Labs and Compulsion Games, the least awarded XGS developers, their games have potential, but a clear need for more budget and time.
Just finished the game, and absolutely adored it. It’s a stellar sequel that left me wanting even more Psychonauts. Very excited to see what Double Fine does next, and hoping that Tim Schafer and the team at Double Fine is struck with inspiration for a Psychonauts 3 one day.
I know I’m preaching to the choir here but, this game is really good. It’s so imaginative, positive & fun. Every level is different & special in it’s own way. It’s really good. Much better than I had anticipated, to be honest.
I just can’t get over HOW MUCH CONTENT there is in the game.
I’ve just unlocked the outside (I’m sure there’s even more to unlock) and I’ve spent hours just exploring, petting animals, doing sidequests, and cleaning up the past 3 levels I’ve done, and it all feels so fresh and new.
This game is so good. It has no right being this good.
I’ve played it on and off all day. I got hit by that collect all the stuff itch. I have two minds entirely 100%ed and all but a handful of things on the other minds. I have all but a handful of PSI Cards for most locations too. I think I’m around level 48 or 49.
