Just finished the game and emotionally it did more for me than any game in years BUT some things from the original Psychonauts seemed to have been lost over the years. I wanted to spend more time with the other interns but they didn’t really give you much time together.

As good as this game is (& it is really good), I maintain that the platforming is not tight enough.

Just as one example, I found trying to collect all of the Figments in Ford’s Mailroom to be a miserable experience from start to finish.

It’s a shame, as the game is such a good time otherwise. Thankfully platforming is not the absolute focus because if it was, the game would be a much worse experience overall.

So this game is starting to transition to one of my favorite games in general of all time which is just crazy to me, and it is absolutely my GOTY hands down so far! The character development, writing, and humor is just in a whole different league than anything I have played in a very long time.

I want to echo the sentiments in here so far that this game has really surprised me. I knew I was going to like it as I have an affinity for 3d platformers as I was around for the golden age of them but even this game is up there with some of the best.

The writing is phenomenal, the worlds are incredibly unique. Double Fine was an acquisition I overlooked and at this point it could turn out to being one of the best ones.

Finished. Hell of a charming game. It speaks to the writing that I didn’t play the first entry but never felt like I missed out on too much. Great characters, unique premise and a fun tone. It feels like the kind of game that would never be made today. Three critiques, though:

  1. A bit long in the tooth
  2. The upgrade system in totality feels tacked on
  3. I’m still testing out a new rig which could be on my end, but it had a lot of frame drops on PC

What do you mean by this?

It dragged on towards the end for me.

@power ,

The PC build suffers like other PC games where background shader compilation causes stuttering whenever you get into new graphical areas. It smooths out after it’s done, but it does not provide a smooth experience. They (entire PC Game Technology Partners) need to resolve this.

Each to their own, but I would have happily played on for another few hours. Actually felt a bit bereft when it was over.

I am getting close to the end now and I finished Compton’s level and that is just the best, so funny and weird in the best way.

CohhCarnage started this game just to check, and ended up completing it. He gives it 10/10.

I respect Cohh and acg for their gaming views generally, and this encourages me to complete this quickly.

I don’t think that was suppose to happen…

Finished. I loved the story from beginning to end, can’t stop thinking about it lol (also y’all should talk to some npcs after credits there are some great wrap-ups), Double Fine knocked it out of the park.

I can see this being a complaint that is mentioned more than once in the future. The levels, or minds, do tend to go on a bit, which can add up to quite a long playtime.

I’m currently just past 17 hours & I think I’m near the end but can’t say for certain. That’s getting near the runtime of Mass Effect 1, for example! That’s maybe just a touch too long for this kind of game, in my opinion.

It’s a tricky one though, because some of the minds are really good. I loved the Psi King’s Sensorium & didn’t mind that it was quite long, moving through several individual levels, but I could understand if someone else just didn’t enjoy the visual style of it or whatever & found it a complete drag.

Edit: Just to quickly mention, I did not expect this game to have a story that resonated with me on an emotional level. I thought it’s story would be almost an afterthought, to be honest, but it’s hit me in the feels. It’s has a very positive vibe. It’s all about taking care of your mental health & trying to be a better person to your friends & loved ones. It’s been really good.
