Seoul=Newsis] Reporter Lee Ji-yong = Nvidia and AMD in the United States are expected to significantly increase the price of graphics processing units (GPUs) from January next year. The cost burden of high memory prices is considered a key reason for the increase in GPU prices.
The two companies plan to start a phased price adjustment over the next few months, rather than just raising prices once. As a result, the price of not only consumer GPUs but also expensive GPUs used in artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and servers can be raised all at once.
Just saw that this morning. I’m now semi tempted to get 2 RX 9070XTs on Marketplace while they’re cheap and upgrade both of our computers for the time being and make it last as long as we can.
Yup, from the article the price increase is going to be on a monthly basis too. With AMD starting January and Nvidia in Febuary, likely a 10-15% increase(I’m assuming) for both condumers(which are getting it first) and data centers.
No clue what this means for Xbox hybrid console. It feels they might be in a position to provide best value for pc gaming if looking for a next gen experience
Problem is everything will go up in price to an insane degree. If consoles get out of the reach of the common people though, maybe that’s when PC/Xbox hybrid gets its redemption arch. It’s hard to say at this point with so many interrogations and anything could still change.
Well according to the internet, this news is great for [my preferred console] because of [various whimsical reasons]. However, it’s very bad news for [the console I do not prefer].
Looking at a report online where price for 32GB modules for servers went from something like 169$ to 249$ or around those numbers. I’m trying to understand how such a price increase makes a card go from 2000$ to 5000$ and also how it will affect other video cards.
Like I can get 2 brand new RX 9070XTs right now with taxes for 2070$ here in Canada until the end of the day. If I upgrade in 2-3 years and that would cost me 2400$ for 2 of a newer gen card, I’d be inclined to wait it out to be honest, would be worth it in my opinion.
I kind of want to do the purchase, but at the same time I’m feeling like it might be me reacting too early and not with enough good reasons.
That’s not the full picture of memory prices. The price multiplier is anywhere from 2.5x to 3x. Back around August a 96GB memory kit ( 2*48 GBs ) was a little under $300, and today it’s priced around $800 – if you can even find it.
Went ahead and grabbed 2 RX 9070XTs on sale as it was ending in 1 hour. We’ll see if those rumors come to pass, I took the bait and bought the latest and greatest from AMD for now. I’ll bet that older GPUs now go up in price just like they did during the mining craze, so I’ll just hold on to mine for a few months instead of getting rid of them right away and see how the market reacts in case I get to sell them for a few hundred more than they are right now.
I guess in theory this could really bolster the competitiveness of the box, but lord this is insane. Actually, instead of the hybrid Xbox it’s sounding like this will be a big chance for Xbox Cloud Gaming. God, I hope good gaming hardware is accessible at all in a few years time. I imagine the current Gen consoles will hold on for a while, so I could wait to upgrade, but I also just really want the new Xbox on launch .
So will this cause Xbox to be the best value next gen in regards to pc gaming? If they really want to be a good pc for a value price I can see this working out for them. Also wonder what this means for steam machine
That’s why I went ahead with the GPU upgrade. With Xbox going more and more towards PC gaming anyway, and the RX 9070XT having 3 times as many Tflops as even the PS5 Pro, I assume that even next gen systems won’t be able to match that, so I’m saving myself the upcoming price increase and I’m also getting something that’ll be future proof for quite some time. I tend to switch card every 5 years, but might make an exception this time around depending on the market situation.
Guess I’ll just connect a Series S or something like that at my computer desk if needed for games I want to access on Backwards Compatibility and play the big stuff on the PC.
Cloud services could definitely get a boost though, especially with in lower income markets. Or, financing will be the norm going forward for game consoles. Xbox All-Access making a comeback!
Just wondering what will happen if the next Xbox was really going to be around 1000$. Also, I haven’t really seen any mention of the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG XBox Ally X prices being affected, but I’m guessing they’ll also get a price increase soon enough!
Just installed both of our RX 9070XT, my wife says she already notices the difference in her computer (all she plays is World of Warcraft anyway!), and I’m about to test on mine, but feeling like maybe I’m due for a Windows 11 fresh install for the new year.
