I saw these two comments and I hadn’t even thought of that yet. Now I really want Xbox to stick with 2027.
That interaction screams to me that no one understand technology, especially those who get some internal details. Delaying a product by 2 years should mean they end up using a 2 year newer APU. That is what everyone would do, unless they were Nintendo.
But wouldn’t they have to adjust their designs for that and so reinvest with AMD in order to radically change what they were initially planning? And if that’s the case, wouldn’t all of that R&D end up affecting the release price of the console as they’d have to account for that when trying to recoup their investment?
The counter point is viewing it from a commercial perspective with two choices, release a possibly non-viable product two years late with muted reception or retool it to be commercially viable with better reception.
This is a concern for the book keepers and product specialists. My take has always been that it’s more feasible to cut off a dead project and move onto next revision implementation if it truly is delayed by two years. Take the financial write-off on the books and move on. As the saying goes, “stop chasing bad money with good”.
If I were MS or Sony, I’d still release the device at the much higher price for those willing to pay, but I’d keep the old gen alive as well. That way you keep the low cost consumers happy but already start locking in new users to the next generation.
Plus for MS, if really going the PC model, than you might get a new Xbox every year.
I’m just wondering if MS is making an APU with AMD or if Xbox compatibility will be baked in on the whole Ryzen pipeline. That imo, would be a dream come true!
To blame a delay on next gen because of ram prices is very naive. Is it one of many reasons yes. There are many economic and political reasons why it will be delayed. It will be very expensive to launch a home console. And to try to launch into stagnate market sounds pretty tough to me. I can see both companies having a wait and see attitude…
I think Xbox will release regardless. They need new hardware in the cloud servers and are already leaning towards a low volume hardware release.
Being PC also gives a bit more flexibility.
Think ms predicted this internally? I mean they knew they would be buying all this stuff for their data centers a long time ago. And knew several competitors in ai would be too. So they pivoted to focus more on pc and less on console to weather the price hike storm?
Maybe I’m giving them too much credit but the timing of component prices going up sure does line up with the work they have been doing to merge console and pc.
From another perspective I guess if they knew this was coming they would have tried to get as many consoles to market before prices skyrocketed. Sony seems to be doing just that.
Who knows…
Yeah, the memory issue is one of like 15 other issues that is plaguing hardware currently, but this is likely one of the few they could get some chatter on.
Imo, PC is likely in a much of a bind now as consoles would be, especially with the report from Newsis that Nvidia and AMD are going to be raising prices on all their products every month for 2026, on both consumer and data center products. Making it seem like they’re planning on having consumer brands compete with enterprise brands (It’s probably Xbox vs Microsoft to see who gets those gpus, fab time and memory lol/j), right now what we need is more companies joining in the memory sales game.
There’s at least one Chinese company whose name I don’t remember entering and the rumor of ASUS doing the same.
I talked to a friend and some family members, and it feels like the general public is not ready for it or even aware of it.
It will impact our every day life, but no traditional media is talking about it. It is worrying.
While ideally I would love to see a new PC Hybrid console in late 2026 or 2027, I would be happy to continue using my Series X until late 2028 as I do feel there is still more juice to get out of it with optimisation’s. Beyond that I would just buy a PC as that is essentially the future of Xbox.
I don’t expect them to. Even if it were on mainstream news, I don’t think most of the public is really aware of larger economic issues and trends. I only am for this rumor of it affecting next Gen launch dates. Most people will just feel that things are pricier without a clue why. Probably by design. Governments and all the big tech are behind the AI boom; I don’t imagine “Video game consoles and other consumer computer electronics are skyrocketing in price due to shortages caused by AI.” will serve their agenda.
Won’t cellphones also go up in price due to all of this? This is definitely something the general public would feel.
Mediatek has decided to pull back on Cell phones from this report
Yup, saw that from the other thread, and mediatek is pretty widespread when it comes to mobile as well. I’m kind of in a mode right now where I’m trying to upgrade a bunch of my stuff before it’s too late and then make it last as long as I can.
Yeah, I have been thinking of getting a Redmagic phone (if it’s still available) because mine current phone is about 4 years old now.
But I haven’t suffered a lot issues (charging port needs replacing) and Samsung decided to update my phone to the latest version of their OS.
Funny you mention that, as I have an iphone 15 Pro and it’s honestly more than I need right now, but I’ve been looking at the Redmagic phones but I’m always seeing a bit of negativity around their software, so not sure if I should splurge for one in the future or not. I was also looking at OnePlus and Samsung, or else I’ll just stick to Apple for the time being.
They’ll 100% feel it and they’ll get angry about it, but most probably won’t know why. There will sure be certain bad political actors trying to blame it on something and promising to make it magically go away . People will hate it and feel heated about it. People will talk about it but not the reasons why. Most consumers will just see it as the fault of the companies themselves.
“You don’t need a smartphone anymore, thanks to the power of the cloud, your phone is now cloud based! We’re just selling you a screen and a 5G modem, everything is now streamed directly to you! Thanks to AI, we can stream on your phone screen what you want to see before you even thought about it!”
I will have to look into Redmagics software to see if it would be something I wouldn’t have too many problems with. Because eventually I will need a new phone and Redmagic seems like a pretty good alternative from just the specs.
