Sony Announce the End of Physical Discs for PlayStation Games

See this type of report likely won’t happen for studios closure, but this one is massive to ignore.

Would be great to have it happen for the potential closures at Microsoft.

Yeah I think I mentioned this in an earlier post but people keep framing this as “Sony released this news now so it would get lost in the much worse news about MS studio closures.” I’m not so sure that’s the case. It’s probably true for hardcore industry followers like us. But for Joe Call of Duty who plays games but doesn’t follow the inside baseball aspect, Compulsion and Ninja Theory potentially getting closed may not be on his radar but PlayStation halting physical discs is.

The thing about closures is it will be placed under “Microsoft laid off over number staff.” It won’t go into detail like “it’s closing the studio behind the beloved Psychonauts 2.” That’s the harsh reality. I would like to be wrong. Time will tell.

Random fact: PS Twitter Account has yet to post anything else after the news. They know this news is going to cause devastation. In fact, the post about Spider-Man next movie got bombarded by them. They know they messed up big time.

He’s not wrong about Japan. Even manga still exist and still kicking. They won’t move to all digital that soon in compare. But you know, PS cares about Japanese market alright.

I’ve seen lots of posts blaming this on MS for not being competitive enough with Sony to stop Sony from doing things like this.

Sometimes you just have to step back and just enjoy games,

I’d like them to wait for it to actually happen instead of a million click bait articles based on rumors to rile up the rage before anything is even announced.

The past was such simpler time.

Can anyone here confirm if PS really removes your trophies from games that was played on physical?

It’s always catastrophic when they figure out what to do with the underwear. This is actually a good metaphor. They’ve made gamers loyal to them through the media and digital lock in, so now they can just rob them in clear daylight. Feels like just blackmail at this point. “Deal with it or abandon your digital library across two generations.”

It’s just funny ( not “haha funny”…well maybe a little ) watching all these gamers in shock. “omg I can’t believe good guy Sony would do this.” Max going on about how Sony was on “our side” during the PS4 gen. No guys this has always been Sony. They were never on our side.

The most refreshing thing I’ve been seeing online is gamers finally referring to Sony as a corporation. Usually words like that are only used to describe Microsoft while Sony and Ninty are “gaming companies”

Nintendo had some great games but I grew up hanging in arcades where Sega ruled the roost and I loved my Sega consoles as well which eventually led me to xbox . Outside of the PS1 gen, the Playstation brand never meant much to me. Maybe that’s why I’m not blinded by nostalgia or have any cultish devotion to it like most seem to. I knew Sony (like Nintendo before them) would eventually show their ass again, especially with Microsoft basically seeming to have thrown in the towel and the gaming media sycophants who are willing to jump on grenades for them , of course they feel emboldened to pull this kinda shit. Why wouldn’t they.

Which is why I continue to beat the “competition is good” drum, when it comes to this kinda shit.

Seeing a deluge of articles saying rumors are that MS is following Sony, even though I think I’ve read that Tom Warren was saying they’re undecided?

Because of the negative Sony news, it seems outlets now have to figure a way to not make it look as bad by making MS also the bad guy!

Yeah precisely. I’m seeing a ton of “Xbox is doing it too.” Well maybe. And they’ll take the heat if and when they make a similar announcement. But right now? Only Sony has, so only Sony takes the heat.

Has Colin Moriarty responded?

He probably blames Palestine

I wonder why they couldn’t wait on Xbox for this news. I mean granted, this is likely done for investors which they were happy because of course. Still, talk about a move that got everyone pulling “no confidence.”

There is truth to this but they fail to realize the media bias towards Sony which not only gives Sony more rope to do “bad” things, but also hampers the competition.

There is another issue though. People engage in console wars not realizing this isn’t a game where one wins over the other. Both (all) of these video game companies coexist in a greater market. If you tank Xbox (physical) sales there is a ripple effect. Xbox games get removed from retail stores, but is there anyone to take up that space? Will Sony or Nintendo buy more shelf space with physical sales falling? Will stores just let their floor/warehouse space sit empty? With Xbox gone now they might start to question why they have a games section at all. It goes all up and down the supply line too, there is now less of a need to press Bluray disks, distribution, delivery, etc… Do people think PS6 can support the entire Bluray production market by itself?

From Halo CE Q&A. It must have been for GTA reference but unintentionally for PS announcement. Timing.
