Support for Xbox 360 games on PC effectively confirmed by dataminers

It was obviously going to happen, but still good to see that the Helix plans are moving forward.

That said, mere hours after the release of those four classic Xbox games on PC, hackers and dataminers were able to quickly determine how Xbox had finally achieved the once-thought impossible goal of bringing classic Xbox games to the Xbox PC app. In fact, not only were they able to confirm that Xbox has already quietly implemented support for Xbox 360 games on PC with this latest update, but they were able to prove that it already works (to some degree) by getting a few Xbox 360 games running on PC.

As pointed out by TheLunarixus on X (post embedded above) the compatibility layer developed by Xbox to get classic Xbox games running on PC is actually a port of XEO3 (AKA “Fission”) — the Xbox 360 emulator that allows players to access Backward Compatible games on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles.

This discovery not only confirms that the four classic Xbox games released on PC are running via an emulator within an emulator (Fission contains “Fusion,” the emulator packed into Xbox 360s that let that console run OG Xbox games), but that this emulator already has functionality to support backwards-compatible Xbox 360 games.

And, to prove that point, the team behind XWine1 (an unofficially developed Xbox One compatibility layer for PC) was able to combine the officially released Fission emulator on PC with a core component of their own work to get a few Xbox 360 games in the Backward Compatibility library running on PC.

This is great. Very cool if they manage to do this. I hope they can also bring back some delisted 360 games, so you can buy them again. Even Xbox games also.

I wonder how they get around the rest of the licenses, my only thought is that they have re classified Xbox as a platform and it somehow worlks.

I would not predict that we get any new games that aren’t already BC on X1/Series. Happy to be wrong though.

That’s what I’m hoping for, my original thought was that they would have issues getting everything currently available on PC.

Yeah there will be console BC games that don’t make it to PC due to being delisted in the time since. The GRID games come to mind. I’m sure there are many others.

I’m hoping Helix as a proprietary Xbox console acts more like the Series consoles and just automatically supports backwards compatibility for all available games. If we continue with the slow added of games (even if they start ramping it up), I don’t think it’ll happen in time. Not to mention there’s all the Xbox One and series era games that just lack XPA. Hopefully Helix is an Xbox console that also happens to play Windows PC games and not a Windows PC that has staggered support for Xbox.

I feel like this work is more long term and services Xbox on PC overall. I hope this is something more for existing windows PCs and future OEMs like the Xbox Ally.
