The future of Xbox "starts now", according to its new GDC message

Move over “This is an Xbox” — “Build for what’s next” tells fans the “future of Xbox starts now” at GDC

New signage at Xbox’s GDC booth highlights “Build for what’s next” and “The future of Xbox starts now,” suggesting a shift in tone as Microsoft looks ahead.

At Xbox’s upcoming appearance at GDC this week, we get a look at its booth, which features several new marketing slogans.

These include “Build for what’s next” and “The future of Xbox starts now,” alongside “empowering developers for 25 years,” with a display showcasing every Xbox console up to the Xbox Series.

Never understood the backlash to “this is an Xbox”. I thought it was a good way to advertise Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming. I also kinda thought the point WAS that the Series consoles weren’t essential. To me the campaigns seem targeted at people who didn’t own any console and telling them “Hey, you can play Xbox RIGHT NOW on your TV, mobile phone, or windows PC.” Existing console owners would’ve been best served ignoring the campaign entirely. This Xbox’s real problem with marketing. They have to balance pleasing existing fans while also seemingly trying to do the impossible and pull in new audiences (audiences that don’t own any console) into the Xbox ecosystem.

Curious to see how the talk goes. I think Xbox is doing a lot more now to push next gen and be really really ready at launch with this transition. Xbox is evolving. They timed things well actually because it does genuinely feel like 2027 will kick off an entirely new era for Xbox. The idea of celebrating 25 years in 2026 and preparing for the next 25 years (2027 and beyond) does actually feel present.
