It kind of makes a twisted sort of sense. Voters may well feel like spreading the wealth, voting for one game as GotY and then another for Adventure, even though the GotY game is nominated in both.
The same mentality explains why sometimes Director and Best Picture are two different movies for the Oscars.
I mean, there’s a difference between Director and Best Picture. But I can’t see how a game that wasn’t considered the best in it’s own genre can be considered the best game across all genres

You’re not wrong. I’m just suggesting how voters may think. The mentality itself is common among Oscar voters, if those anonymous interviews they do every year is to be believed.
