Here is Canada, cartridge or digital is indeed the same price. Main reason why I usually get Nintendo games in physical format, and also because they took away my digital purchases in previous generations by not moving them over to new platforms and keeping them available through BC like Xbox does.
At least with Switch I have to admit they are going in the right direction so far, but I’ll need another generation to be more trusting before I go all in.
I like to think they saw the sales chart and with MKW didn’t chart 1 despite limited platform and fresh from the launch, they’re like “Maybe we need more data on this. Let’s go back.”
They should also go back and think again about the console price rises because the other two didn’t follow suit and hardware sales are going even worse (as expected after the ridiculous price rises) than before.
That one is still up in the air, mainly due to sticky situation. It doesn’t help that Sony even commented without saying, “We won’t raise it.” That’s the sticky situation when it comes USA corporate situation. Games’ price, while I get the cost is getting crazy, is more of take advantage of follow the signal. I mean this was the same company that didn’t raise to $70 until 3 years in yet they went full speed to $80. This was more “ahead of its time” move like Xbox One with online all day.
In short, I believe game price will raise but when it adapts fully remain to be seen.
Everyone is in the end. If you go to the gas station and all are at the same price but one is 10% cheaper, obviously most traffic will be where it’s the cheapest. At some point a company has to accept the realities of making business and competition, and this might mean losing somewhere to gain elsewhere.
Cloud margins on hardware sales was never and will never be realistic. They can’t be aiming for 30% and expecting to reach it in the gaming space. It’s the same reason why car manufacturers all mostly operate in the single digits.
Have we ever had confirmation they’re expecting massive margins on hardware, rather than just not a loss?
I remember Jez having a whine about it (which caused a pile on) yet don’t ever remember seeing it substantiated anywhere - and if anything seeing it dismissed by Xbox and other insiders…
It’s one of those emotional articles that have irritated me on Windows Central recently - there’s enough negative press elsewhere about Xbox in gaming without supposedly positive media posting stuff without substantiating it (particularly given the usual pile ons)…
Amy Hood has repeatedly said they’re focused on margins. I’m sure we’ll hear about it next week during their end-of-year financials. None of these companies want to lose tons of money on hardware anymore.
